A very well-preserved copy, with some very faint toning to page edges but clean and clear across the entire image surface, with lines and shading remaining bold and very presentable. The earliest known history of the Afghans, by Ni'mat Allah al-Hawari, an historiographer at the court of Jehangir from 1609-11, much of it mythological such as claiming that the Pashtun people are descended from one of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. The translator, Bernhard Dorn (1805-81), was a German professor at St.Petersburg specialising in the history and languages of Iran, Russia, and Afghanistan, and taught the first ever Pashtu class in Europe. The second volume includes a Pashtu grammar and vocabulary. First volume was published in 1829, the second in 1836. xv, 134, 131pp. Two books bound into a single volume. Modern half-calf binding with marbled boards. Five raised bands to spine with black morocco label with gilt lettering. Leading and lower page edges untrimmed. Half-title and title page slightly frayed at the leading edge and reinforced. Light foxing at beginning and end.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Complete in ten volumes, all uniformly bound in contemporary full speckled calf leather with gilt decoration and red and black leather spine labels. Top edges gilt. Seven engraved frontispieces and one other engraving. The famed coloured marble leaf forms pp111-2 of volume two. Later endpapers, showing some marginal toning. 12mos. Boards a little worn, especially on corners, some of which are rubbed and rounded and spine joints, and spine a little faded. Internally neat, clean and bright barring a little light spotting affecting all volumes and some old marginal damp stains affecting volumes six to eight. Binding remains robust and square on all volumes - volumes 1, 6 and 10 in particular have a little fraying of leather at the head of the spine. A very attractive, tactile set.
