Small 8vo in fours, pp. xii, [iii], 20-62, [3], 58-69[8], 80-137; a very good copy in contemporary sheep, gilt bands on spine; old biblical plate fixed to inside upper cover. Ownership inscription on title of Miles Legg, Sunderland, September 1792. A rare volume of poetry by John Oswald (c. 1760-93), journalist, poet and revolutionary writer. Having spent some years in India in military service, Oswald was radicalised as a journalist in London in the late 1780s, and became a friend of Tom Paine, Horne Tooke and others: it was at this time that he started writing under the pseudonym of Silvester Otway. He was also an early vegetarian and an outspoken atheist. In the spring of 1790, enthused with the French Revolution, he went to Paris and in 1792 joined the revolutionary army; and in due course he fought in the battle of La Vendée in September 1793, where he was killed. Of all the copies traced, only the National Library of Scotland copy definitely has the plate which is called for by ESTC. The British Library copy is certainly without it, and none is in the copy reproduced by ECCO, either. It seems reasonable to conclude that the book is complete with no plate, and that the plate in the NLS copy was added sometime after publication. The list of subscribers includes some familiar names such as Mr Edgeworth, John Wilkes and Philip Yorke (presumably the politician and son of the Earl of Hardwicke) - clearly this was not a widely-circulated book. This is a very short list, including only about 160 names (though some are down for more than one copy), and the book cannot have circulated very widely. Zachs, The First John Murray, no. 732 (p. 360).
