His novels, of which the Harpole Report is the best known, are also well worth reading. These pocket books hover between a greeting and a present. They fit in a common envelope and go for minimum postage. In cold bedrooms only one hand to the wrist need suffer exposure. These Picture Books were published by J. L. Carr. He wanted to champion 20th Century Wood Engravers, whose work he thought had been overlooked. His first was on Thomas Bewick, which included extracts of his autobiography. Others are simply visual. They are great little publications and the perfect tiny gift for a wood engraving enthusiast. A further 4 were published by R. D. and J. M. Carr who continued the series. Thomas Bewick c1753 - 1828. He is "usually considered the founder of wood-engraving" as "the first to realize its full potentialities" using metal-engraving tools to cut hard boxwood across the grain, producing printing blocks that could be integrated with metal type, but were much more detailed and durable than traditional woodcuts.The result was high-quality illustration at a low price. George Edward Mackley MBE (born 1900 in Huntingdon, died 1983 in Tonbridge, Kent) was an English wood engraving artist: "My wife was born at Hemingford Grey in Huntingdonshire and we knew and loved its river, the Great Ouse. We sat by it, we meditated by it.I knew its locks, its churches, its meadows, and, further afield, its fens. It became part of my life." Very good indeed.
