Safer's varied career spans work in theater lighting, television, real estate, politics and banking.Safer is best known for his monumental sculptures, but he has also created many smaller works. These include award sculptures for organizations such as the National Air and Space Museum, the PGA Tour, the Georgetown University Lombardi Cancer Center, the World Peace Foundation, and the Shakespeare Guild.Safer's works stand in museums, galleries and embassies throughout the world. In 1972 and in 1989 the U.S. Department of State sent a group of Safer sculptures abroad to be exhibited as examples of America's finest art.In 1971 the renowned art collector and U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, Walter Annenberg, invited Safer to have an exhibition at the American Embassy in London.In 1972 President Gerald Ford presented Safer's Limits of Infinity to King Juan Carlos of Spain as a gift of state. This in turn led to several major events in Safer's sculptural career. As a result of a news report of President Ford's gift, the Dean of Harvard Law School sought to acquire a Safer sculpture for the school. This culminated in 1979 with the installation of Judgment, a monumental bronze work which was presented to Harvard Law School as a gift of Safer's class of 1949. This was Safer's first monumental public work.John McArthur, the Dean of Harvard Business School visited the palace at Zarzuela where King Juan Carlos had installed Limits of Infinity. Moved by the sculpture, Dean McArthur returned to America and commissioned Safer's 20-foot-high (6.1 m) Search for Harvard Business School. The patinated bronze was installed on the Business School grounds in 1984.In 1985 Safer was invited to exhibit sculpture in the Pioneers of Flight Hall at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum, in Washington, D.C. He has the distinction of being the only artist to have ever had an exhibition in the central gallery of the most visited museum in the world.In 1989 the U.S. Department of State again sent Safer sculptures to Europe. As of 2008, the Department has exhibited Safer sculpture in London, Paris, Beijing, Dublin, Bern, Lisbon, Brussels, Bucharest, Belgrade, Nassau, Washington, and New Deli. First edition. A rather chatty and entertaining account by a Cambridge graduate; Joseph Hucks (1772-1800) was accompanied on his tour by a friend, a twenty-one year old fellow graduate by the name of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Along with Coleridge, Hucks was introduced to Robert Southey in Oxford before they departed for Wales. He was thus present for the genesis of "pantisocracy," Southey and ColeridgeÕs ultimately failed vision of a "republic of Reason and Virtue." From the scant information available it would appear that Hucks meaningfully participated in these early conversations, and that he assisted in the planÕs cultivation over the remainder of that year. "HucksÕs two publications, his 1795ÊPedestrian Tour through North Wales, in a Series of LettersÊand his 1798ÊPoems, by J. Hucks, trace pantisocracyÕs early developments while also acting as literary outlets of its radical ideals (in addition to contributing to the Welsh tour corpus and to radical literary discourse of this period). HisÊTourÊrecords his and ColeridgeÕs discourses on radical principles, while entries in hisÊPoemsÊeffectively bring them into being."--Matthew C. Jones. Early in their tour, the pair stayed in Ross-on-Wye. While there Coleridge penned a poem on the window shutter; the poem was transcribed by Hucks and included in the Tour. The poem later appeared in Coleridge's published works as "Lines written at the King's-Arms, Ross." Hucks died from consumption at the age of 28, and was thereafter largely forgotten. His Poems received little notice; Southey included Hucks in the original plan for his Specimens of the later poets, only for the entry to be dropped before publication. "In these instances from HucksÕs small oeuvre, three discrete yet symbiotic points arise: first, Hucks thought of himself as part of the intellectual discourse in which Coleridge and Southey took part; second, he thought of his work as possessing its own intellectual merit (despite citing his 'diffidence,' he claims in the preface toÊPoemsÊthat 'in quitting this [Poems], the Author is obliged also to relinquish his favourite pursuit'); and, third, while his work unveils new biographical points regarding Coleridge and Southey, it more importantly presents new junctures that bring together British radicalism, English-language conceptions of Wales, and Romantic poetry and travel writing (in generic terms). That he and his work remain virtually untouched suggests that the degree to which they will affect our understandings of the above remains outside of the realm of speculation."--Matthew C. Jones. Coleridge's experiences on the tour are reflected in some of his later writing; he wrote at least two poems during the tour, and described the journey in three long letters, two to Southey and one to Henry Martin. He suffered throughout from heat and thirst, and in composing The Ancient Mariner he recalled climbing Penmaenmawr: "I took the thought of grinning for joy, in that poem, from my companion's remark to me when we had climbed to the top of Plinlimmon [i.e. Penmaenmawr] and were nearly dead with thirst. We could not speak from the constriction, till we found a little puddle under a stone. He said to me, 'You grinned like an idiot!' He had done the same." A biography of Hucks, and a discussion of the leading ideas and attitudes found expressed in the Tour and the part which Coleridge may have played in formulating or developing them, appear in the long critical introduction to the scholarly edition edited by Alun R. A dictionary of musical terms aimed at the amateur enthusiast, and a nice example of the fashion of the period for 'improving' self-help books. That they were often rushed into print to satisfy a pre-existing market is evidenced here by the Latin solecism in the title, corrected by hand in this copy by a disgruntled early owner. The book was republished in expanded form in 1791 -- but was still found to be 'short and incomplete' by the Critical Review in its issue of February that year. ESTC.…
