Rev. Nathaniel West was born in Ulster, Ireland, in 1794 and entered the ministry in the Independent Connection in Hull, England, in 1821. He came to the United States in 1834, and was pastor of Presbyterian churches in various parts of Pennsylvania. He was senior chaplain in the Satterlee United States Military Hospital, West Philadelphia, from May, 1862, until his death, Sept. 2, 1864. The islands include Cuba, Jamaica, San Domingo (present-day Hispaniola, or Haiti and Dominican Republic), the Bahama Islands, Puerto Rico, the Windward Islands, Barbados, and Trinidad. Includes inset of the Bermuda islands. Part of Central America is also visible, with soundings labeled around the coast. In very good condition, with a closed tear to lower margin. Wide margins and centerfold as issued. Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884) is one of the most prolific American publishers of the 19th century. He opened his own company in 1856 that produced atlases, maps and encyclopedias. The company made great maps based on those by J.H. Colton and Johnson produced a newly updated version every year up until the late 19th century.…

Complete nine-volume set in handsome contemporary full calf bindings with gilt-ruled boards, raised bands, red leather spine labels, gilt titles and decorative gilt devices. All 24 engraved plates are present. Bindings remain remarkably attractive and sound for a set published in 1766, showing expected age-related rubbing, scuffing, edge/corner wear and some variation in color. Gilt remains quite attractive. Interiors are generally clean and well preserved, with occasional age toning, spotting/foxing and other minor signs of age. Pages have the characteristic texture and appearance of 18th-century laid paper. (See photos) Each volume contains an older "PRIVATE LIBRARY" bookplate/label on the front pastedown; a previous owner's name on these labels has been obscured in black marker. Earlier ownership inscription dated September 18, 1873 appears in at least one volume. These ownership marks are unattractive but confined to the preliminary/pastedown areas and do not detract significantly from the text or the handsome appearance of the set on the shelf. First edition: a substantial biography, with much new information, written at the suggestion of Warburton, to whose collection of Pope's manuscripts Ruffhead was given access. Warburton read the proofs of this book, and made corrections. Owen Ruffhead (ca. 1723-1769) grew up in London, where his father was a baker; the proceeds of a winning lottery ticket were used to give him a good education, and he became a lawyer. His venture into literary biography had a mixed reception; Samuel Johnson famously remarked that Ruffhead 'knew nothing of Pope and nothing of poetry'. Despite such opinions, the syndicate of booksellers who published this biography quickly reprinted it in quarto to accompany a new four-volume collected edition of Pope's works. The frontispiece depicts a commemorative monument erected by Warburton in 1761.…
