Based on the clinical practice, it is conceivable to integrate a circular single-sided scanner, for example, into a patient table. In order to achieve an optimally adapted result to the medical application, a tradeoff between size, field of view and patient access must be made. The new coil geometry is designed to increase the field of view, without exceeding the width of the patient table and therefore ensure good access to the patient. Besides the integration of this new coil geometry into an existing simulation framework, the simulation is validated by comparing the results to a self-built coil and an already established coil geometry. Numerical simulations on patient specific models may be used to extract pathophysiological parameters like flow velocity and pressure distribution in the human pharynx and can evaluate the severity of the disease and the success of a therapy. In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamics are used to simulate the air flow in the natural pharyngeal geometry of a patient as well as in the deformed pharyngeal geometry of the same patient treated with a dental appliance. The simulations are performed with two different types of boundary conditions. It is found that a realistic choice of a pressure drop boundary condition shows a significant change in the pressure distribution for the different geometries. In using an inflow velocity as boundary condition a change in the dimensionless Reynolds number based on the flow velocity can be observed. Bone is a complicated structure with direction-dependent, inhomogeneous material properties, influenced by compositional, geometrical and architectural aspects. This volume focuses on a density-based assignment of orthotropic bone properties. Elasticity-density relationships in homogenized femoral zones were examined to evaluate the orthotropic density-dependence of the nine elastic material constants locally. Cortical bone samples were tested in compression and torsion tests using videoextensometry to determine the elastic constants. The elastic properties of cancellous bone were predicted by micro finite element analysis. All determined constants were correlated to the radiological bone mineral density of each sample, which was determined by quantitative computed tomography. The trabecular eigensystem was investigated for each cancellous zone to assign the mean directionality of trabecular fabric. In this book, this subject is first overviewed and presented regarding the technical details by selected English scientific publications.The patient model results from a mostly automatic procedure for the segmentation of puncture-relevant organs and structures. For increased realism, the influence of simulated respiratory movement extracted and modeled from 4D-CT images was also taken into account. Based on these modeling steps, innovative, efficient GPU algorithms for volume-based visuo-haptic simulation and the direct volume rendering of physiological processes of the patient model were proposed. For a time-invariant patient model, the local consideration of space bending mathematically introduced by an inverted movement model leads to efficient visuo-haptic rendering methods: Simulated imaging of ultrasound, fluoroscopy, the stereoscopic two-eye perspective and haptics are elaborated. This approach eventually allowed the immersive interaction of the ultrasound probe and puncture needle with breathing virtual patients.The methods were developed in cooperation with clinical partners and successfully applied and evaluated in a user study. The medical potential of the methods presented in this work lies in the future in the pre-operative and personalized preparation of interventions.
