Catalogue. Zustand: Gut. 63 p. Good copy with signs of wear on the cover. The cover is rubbed and creased. The pages are clean. Gutes Exemplar mit Gebrauchsspuren am Einband. Einband ist berieben und mit Knicken. Der Die Seiten sind sauber. - - "In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Euro-Americans created images of Polynesians the bloodthirsty savage, the dying savage, Primitive Man, the children of Eden and collected and displayed objects which corroborated these views. Some of these classic Polynesian objects are presented here: the celebrated 'u'u club of the Marquesans, the Maori tiki, Tahitian adzes. As we continue in the twentieth century to revise and create images of Polynesians, not only do we imbue these objects with new meaning, but we include other objects as illustrations. Not long ago, several of the objects presented here would not have been seen as classic (truly) Polynesian art: the Marquesan carved bowl, the late nineteenth century Maori door jamb figure, the Niuean poncho. The Polynesians also participated in the creation of these cultural images, in their selection of objects to trade and in the development of new types: the Austral carved paddles, the Mangaian adze. L. Massard's watercolor Nomahanna and the Maori cane handle (back cover) illustrate these processes of selection and manipulation in the creation of cultural images. We assume that the watercolor was drawn from life, for there is an affecting immediacy to Nomahanna's gaze, an authority in the carefully observed costume. In fact, Massard did not accompany Kotzebue's Pacific voyage and never met Nomahanna. He has blended verbal and pictorial images to render the essence of Nomahanna according to the European view. Nomahanna wears a sailor's shoes not because she wore them with this blue dress and flower garland - she did not - but because Kotzebue himself was fascinated by the size of her feet and discussed her shoes at great length when describing another encounter with her." Sehr gutes, gebräuntes Exemplar mit leichten Gebrauchsspuren. Einband ist leicht beschädigt. Sonst ohne Mängel. - - The regional name "Melanesia" might lead the unsuspecting viewer to assume that an easily-definable cultural unity pervades this area of the southwestern Pacific. Nothing could be further from the truth, for the Melanesian islands are home to a remarkable diversity of peoples, languages, and arts. First introduced by the French navigator Dumont d'Urville in 1832, the term Melanesia ("black islands") was inspired by the dark complexions of some peoples living in the area. Today, as a geographical signifier, the term defines a Pacific zone stretching eastward from the massive island of New Guinea to a string of island groups built on a submerged volcanic chain. "In producing the prsent exhibition and catalogue, Collecting African Art 1890s - 1950s, I have tried to select objects which are not only exceptional aesthetically, but also have provenance, collection history, or offer other reliable clues about their age or probable period of creation. This exhibition contains many works which have not been seen publicly for nearly half a century. During the past 15 years Hurst Gallery has mounted several exhibitions of oceanic art in which documented pieces were numerous. New England, with its history of over 200 years contact with the cultures of the Pacific and the Far East, has often yielded single pieces or entire collections from those regions with their provenance more or less intact. African objects with such collection histories are rarer. The acquistition of the African objects from the Harry Levine collection, all 17 of which were collected before 1949, has facilitated this exhibition. Most of the other objects, acquired individually in America and aborad, have either some collection history or are stylistacally similar to documented pieces elsewhere." - from the foreward by Norman Hurst ISBN 9780962807442 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 248 21,0 x 0,6 x 28,6 cm, Taschenbuch.
