Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Every year in England and Wales alone, one in twenty adults suffer domestic abuse, two thirds of them women. Every week, two men kill a woman they were intimate with. And still we ask the wrong question: Why didn''t she leave Instead, we should ask: Why did he do it Investigative journalist Jess Hill puts perpetrators -- and the systems that enable them -- in the spotlight. Her radical reframing of domestic abuse takes us beyond the home to explore how power, culture and gender intersect to both produce and normalise abuse. She boldly confronts uncomfortable questions about how and why society creates abusers, but can''t seem to protect their victims, and shows how we can end this dark cycle of fear and control.''See What You Made Me Do'' is a profound and bold confrontation of this urgent crisis and its deep roots. It will challenge everything you thought you knew about domestic abuse.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book examines facets of North Indian Muslim identity c. 1850-1950. It focuses specifically on the role of literature and poetry as the medium through which certain Muslim 'voices' articulated, negotiated, configured and expressed their understandings of what it meant to be Muslim and Indian, given the socio-political exigencies of the time. Specifically, a history of the public space of poetry will be presented and half of the book will chart a history of the mushairah (poetic symposium) over this period. In doing so it will analyse the multiple ways in which this space adapted to the changing economic, social, political and technological contexts of the time. The second half of the book will present a history of the ideas that were often articulated in the space of the mushairah and changing notions of the watan (homeland) amongst various Muslim individuals will be analysed. In particular the book will seek to locate changing ideas of hubb-e watan (patriotism) in order to offer new perspectives on how Muslim intellectuals, poets, political leaders and journalists conceived of and expressed their relationship to India and to the trans-national Muslim community.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A collection of essays that focus on the role of music in the formation of a public in India across the twentieth century, Music, Modernity, and Publicness in India looks at different regions, languages, and different genres and styles of music. Modernity fundamentally changed the relationship between private and public realms. New social arrangements gave rise to new forms of music making, with the musicians no longer performing exclusively in the princely courts or in the private homes of the wealthy. Not only did the act of listening to, and appreciating music became an important feature of public life in modern times, it also influenced how modernity itself took shape. Music became a key site for the articulation of questions of the public and of politics, and the essays in this volume look at various such aspects, from the formation of modern spaces of performance, certain forms of music assuming the status of classic, creation of a national and nationalistic tradition, and circulation of music in popular politics to broadcast technology. Through exploring these diverse inter-disciplinary questions relating to music, musicians, and their audiences, the volume provides new entry-points for the discussion of music and modern-day cultural practice in India.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Mutating Goddesses traces the shifting fortunes of four specific Hindu deities - Manasa, Candi, Sasthi and Laksmi--- from the fifteenth century to the present time. It focuses on the goddess-invested tradition of Bengal's Hinduism to argue for a historical evolution/devolution of divinities in tandem with sectarian interests and illumines in the process the knotted correlation of gender, caste and class in the sanctioning of female subjectivities through goddess formation. The critical studies of Hindu goddesses have been dominated by the sastrik perspective deriving from the Sanskrit scriptures authorized by the male Brahman. But there are religious practices and beliefs under the broad rubric of Hinduism that are neither governed by the male Brahman nor articulated in Sanskrit. It is this vibrant laukika archive-- - considered low from the hegemonic perspective---that Mutating Goddesses explores to realize the politic trafficking between this realm and the sastrik. The book excavates the multiple and layered heritage of the region which includes tribal culture, Buddhism, Tantricism, and so on, as is available in rituals, proverbs, verses, circulating myths, poetic genres and kathas, caste manuals, census records etc to illustrate how tradition is a matter of strategic selection.

Kombiprodukt. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This is the first collected edition of the letters of Humphry Davy. Davy is a significant figure in both the history of science and literary history. One of the foremost chemists of the early nineteenth century, he was the first person to inhale nitrous oxide. He pioneered electrochemistry, using the Voltaic pile to isolate more chemical elements than any other scientist; and he invented the miners' safety lamp that came to be known as the 'Davy lamp'. His lectures and papers played a key part in the professionalization of science, in the growth of scientific institutions, and in the emergence of scientific disciplines. He was the protégé of Thomas Beddoes and Joseph Banks, and the mentor of Michael Faraday. He was also a poet, and a friend of poets, including Wordsworth, Southey, Scott, and Byron. The edition contains fully annotated transcriptions of correspondence (much previously unpublished) with such figures as Joseph Banks, Thomas Beddoes, Jöns Jacob Berzelius, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Michael Faraday, Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac, the Herschels, the Marcets, Marc-Auguste Pictet, Nicolas-Théodore de Saussure, James Watt, Josiah Wedgwood, William Hyde Wollaston, and Thomas Young. The edition throws new light on Davy, on the histories of science and literature, and on the social history of the early nineteenth century. It illuminates scientific controversies over the safety lamp, the Board of Longitude, the Geological Society, and the Royal Society. It offers new perspectives on the 1790s poetry of Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Southey. It illuminates women's literary networks, reveals the links between science and government, and casts light on provincial and dissenting intellectual networks, among Quakers and Unitarians.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This is the first time that Thomas Carlyle's remarkable The French Revolution: A History has been published in a comprehensive scholarly form. The edition features an abundance of new critical features, including a critical text that presents the edition much as it appeared in the first edition of 1837, but with a detailed record of the emendations that Carlyle made in subsequent versions during his lifetime. These volumes also contain a variety of scholarly aids--literary, textual, historical, and photographic--to render The French Revolution more approachable and readable to twenty-first century readers. The edition takes seriously Carlyle's claim to have produced a history of the Revolution that is rooted in his primary French sources. The extensive annotations vividly testify to his deep engagement in a wide array of histories, pamphlets, memoirs, and biographies. The notes not only demonstrate his complex method of history, but they also shed fresh light on his artistry and his rich use of language. For the first time, readers will be provided with numerous samples of engravings that Carlyle used from Chamfort's Tableaux historiques and other sources to visualize the 'Flame Drama,' as it was conceived by revolutionary artists and printers. The appendices will also include an annotated version of Carlyle's essay, 'On the Sinking of the Vengeur' (1839), in which he offers a detailed response to controversy surrounding the events that occurred during the naval battle between France and Britain on 'the Glorious First of June,' 1794; an image and transcription of an unpublished MS holograph excerpt from The French Revolution located in the Harry Ransom Center, Texas; and a copy of a corrected proof of 'The Feast of Pikes' held in the Forster Collection of the National Art Library, Victoria and Albert Museum.
