There is a small piece out from the top left corner of the heavily darkened half-title. The title page is slightly darkened and foxed and the pages are toned with occasional foxing or staining. There is a long tear to the folding plate opposite page 16. There are occasional pencil annotations. Good. Volume one only of this first edition, complete in itself. Only 750 copies were printed.The contents of this volume consist of: 1. "Barons by Tenure, whose Honours have been considered to have terminated, circ. 49 Henry III"; 2. "The Barons of the Counties Palatine of Chester and of Durham, distinguished from the Barons of the Realm"; 3. "An Account of those Persons who were summoned to Parliament, with whom the Honour expired; or who, or their Posterity (although existing), did not continue to receive the like Summons"; 4. Vol. I, [x], 1 - 488, [viii] index, [8] text to accompany the supplemental plates. Vol II [ii] blank, vi, [ii], [1] - 191, [1], 184 - 487, [viii] index. Bound in speckled calf with red and green morocco labels, with five raised bands, ornate gilt decoration to compartments and titles in gilt. Quarto. Vol I: wear to leather with bumped corners and edges, slight splitting at top and tail of hinges, nicks to spine (some loss at top) and back board, bookplate and small label to pastedown along with an ink mark and an ink number on the ffep, pages clean, binding firm. Vol II: Similarly worn leather with splitting starting in the front hinge, headband coming loose, one leaf torn (without loss), damp stains to six plates, some foxing and occasional marks but generally clean. [Osbeck (1723 - 1805) was a Swedish explorer, naturalist and an apostle of Carl Linnaeus. He was born in the parish of Hålanda on Västergötland and studied at Uppsala with Carolus Linnaeus. In 1750 - 1752 he travelled as chaplain on the ship Prins Carl to Asia where he spent four months studying the flora, fauna, and people of the Canton region of China. He returned home just in time to contribute more than 600 species of plant to Linnaeus' Species Plantarum, published in 1753. Ekeberg (1716 - 1784) was a Swedish physician, chemist and explorer. He made several voyages to the East Indies and China as a sea captain. He brought back reports of the tea tree and wrote a number of books. Trained as a pharmacist and chemist, Ekeberg started his career as a ship's doctor, and became an expert navigator. Between 1742 and 1778 he made ten trips to India and China, becoming a captain in 1750 for the Swedish East India Company. He brought back numerous natural history specimens from his voyages for Carl Linnaeus, with whom he had a close friendship, and was honoured by having the genus Ekebergia created.].

"John Ellis was an eighteenth-century naturalist known for being the first person to publish a description of the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) after specimens were sent from North Carolina to Britain in 1769. Ellis was also one of the first marine biologists, specialising in zoophytes, particularly corals, which he illustrated with great attention to detail. Among his discoveries, made with the Swedish naturalist Daniel Solander (1733-82), was that sponges were animals. This book on zoophytes, with additions by Solander, was published posthumously in 1786 at the instigation of Ellis's daughter after the manuscript was found among Solander's effects by the Swedish embassy in London four years earlier."
