Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. The present volume [is] a survey of Tagore's contributions to music drama and dance. It is designed to be our Akademi's tribute to this aspect of Tagore's many sided genius. We do not claim that it is an adequate tribute or a comprehensive one. We feel nonetheless that the editors have done well in confining themselves in view of the limited space that the funds permitted to what may be called the most authoritative writings on the subject. The authority flows from two considerations first because of the long and intimate contact that the writers have had with this aspect of Tagore's creative genius and secondly because of the serious study that they have made of the subject. These articles may be said to have stood the test of time. Scattered in books and journals these fugitive pieces on cognate subjects long awaited collection in an anthology of this kind. We hope therefore that the volume will meet a long felt need.

Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Contents Preface. 1. Status of the adolescent girl in the slums of Haryana. 2. Women's access to health facilities a study. 3. Declining child sex ratio in Haryana. The concept of empowerment must necessarily be seen in linkage with the choice for women to control their lives and make choices not only within households but also at the societal level. For poverty to reduce and influence society it is necessary that structures and opportunities be equitable and fair. The book is structured to bring out some key areas of gender concern slums health and sex ratio. Spread in three distinct parts it deals with the three key areas even as all along a deep relation exists in all the three elements of concern. The study has drawn conclusions from a methodical collection and analysis of information and data presented in table form for an easy understanding. For a state like Haryana that is ranked at the top of the economic development chart in the country the picture that emerges from other social and gender development indicators is clearly dismal. The book would be of interest to academics policy planners and of course to those with interest in these concerns. 192 pp.

The men behind the curtain and the Tablighi link. 4. Curriculum and learning. 5. Female authority and the public. 6. Girls Madrasas revisited. Appendices. Bibliography. In Reaching the Minds of Young Muslim Women the author investigates traditional institutions of Islamic learning for Muslim girls. While a lot is known or thought to be known about Madrasas for boys similar Islamic schools for girls have up to now escaped public attention by and large. In the aftermath of 9/11 Madrasas received and continue to receive much public attention also in the media mostly owing to the alleged link between Madrasa education and forms of violence. This study asks what is taught in Madrasas of girls how they emerged whether they are different from Madrasas for boys and how the young women interpret Islam in the light of what they learn. Observations suggest that apart from what is taught officially the informal curriculum plays an equally if not more important role. The aim of studying in the Madrasa appears to reach beyond formal education as life and learning in the Madrasa serve to bring about an all encompassing reform of the students. 224 pp.
Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Contents 1. Introduction. 2. Problems and issues. 3. Review of research and conceptual framework. 4. Dowry protection to women. The menace of dowry was generally unknown in early societies where women enjoyed considerable freedom and privilege in the spheres of marriage family religion and public life. With time however the position of women changed adversely and many bad customs added to her problems. The phenomenon of dowry in modern times reflects a grim change in this customary system. Each year in India thousands of innocent brides are burnt killed or maimed in the prime of their lives for dowry. To put it simply dowry contributes significantly to the bride's future whom would she marry the element of respect and affection she would get in her new home. The consequential stress on the girl's family is only therefore a natural sequel and is today far greater than it has ever been. This book studies the menace of dowry as it is and measures its painful effects on our society. It suggests ways and means to eradicate the evil root and branch from our life. The book would be of interest to academics policy planners and of course to those with interest in these concerns. 212 pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Dust Jacket Included. Contents: Preface. 1. Borders and identities : the Turko-Persian divide and shared heritages. 2. Peoples, nations, borders : demography and delimitation re-examined. 3. Borders and homelands : displacement and the assertion of identity. 4. Borders and the 'ethnic' challenge: reconciling national and regional identities. 5. Conclusions: identities in transition.Bibliography. Index. "The emergence of states in the Central Asian region, in the course of the last century, entailed both a reconfiguration of political space and a reforging of collective identities within the borders of the states. As the fuzzy limits of frontiers were transformed to more rigidly determined borders, identities were transformed. In most cases, however, the extent of this transformation was limited by cultural and socio-economic factors that ultimately determined the final form that identities assumed. "This is a study of the transformation of identity in course of the transition from frontiers into borders and the problems that remain inherent in the process. It attempts to do so by examining this transformation in a region that today constitutes modern day Uzbekistan and Tajakistan. The study concludes by noting that the transformation of identities that accompanies the change from frontiers into borders is a continuous process. As newer lines emerge, demarcating political units, identities also face transition." (jacket)No. 27866 224 pp.

It shows the colonial economy governance and culture in their true colours. More importantly it shows many dark dusty but highly useful things lying hidden in T.S. Elliot's words in history's cunning passages and contrived corridors and fills many a gap in our knowledge of the colonial times. Besides this the book also tells us a great deal about our religion philosophy and epics. No student of the 19 century India can afford to ignore this highly informative book. 266 pp.

There are enough verses in the Qur'an to prove this. Violence is allowed only for defence never for aggression. Moreover it is incidental not ideological. In principle it is peace and it is duty of all Muslims to promote and establish peace. This book it is hoped would help generate a fresh debate on this sensitive subject in a much more informed manner. Also those Muslims who desire to establish Islamic state should know that the Qur'an does not refer to any such concept. It only desires to establish a just society free of injustices exploitation and oppression whatever form the state takes. What is called khliafat e rashidah was also based on historical context. The form today Islamic state takes will depend on today's context. There is no standard form available to emulate. This is precisely what this book says. 288 pp.

In democracy only the people can force them to give attention to their burning problems and this can happen when the people become conscious of the games the political leaders play.
