This is the first full-length study of Charles Thomas Jackson, one of the most remarkable and maligned figures in the history of American science and medicine. Jackson was a key figure in three notable scientific discoveries made in the United States before 1850: the discovery of surgical anesthesia, brought about with the denti…st William T. G. Morton; the discovery of the American electromagnetic telegraph, made in association with the artist Samuel F. B. Morse; and the proving and commercial exploitation of the copper deposits in the state of Michigan, achieved over the objections of two of his assistants. But in spite of those accomplishments, Jackson's name was eventually invested with ridicule and scorn. Out of greed or resentment, those associating with Jackson in these three discoveries claimed the honor of discovery for themselves . To bolster their arguments, each published defenses of their claims that disparaged and denigrated Jackson and blackened his name, while Jackson published nothing in response. The reputation they bequeathed to Jackson, marking him as an unstable, paranoid and litigious man who was forever claiming the discoveries of others, was accepted and embellished by twentieth century commentators, a number of whom sometimes maliciously -- resorted to fiction and even slander to back up their arguments and to further dishonor him. Sir William Osler (18491919) was the most famous and best-loved physician in the English-speaking world during the early twentieth century. Some consider him "the greatest physician of all time" or "the fat…her of modern medicine." More commonly, he is seen as an avatar of humanism in medicine. The 135 contributors to the present volume address four questions, as follows: What was Osler really like, and what did he do? Assembled for the first time in one place are reminiscences and tributes by more than 200 of Osler's contemporaries. His top character strengths, assessed with criteria developed by the Values in Action Classification Project, were kindness, vitality, and love of fellow humans. He used these to energize the medical profession and implement major changes in medical education. What did he write, and who influenced his thinking? Presented here, for the first time in one place, are anal-yses of all of Osler's major non-technical writings along with sketches of those who influenced him. His interests changed over time from character-building and the unity of the medical profession to more fundamental problems of human existence, including whether science will ultimately prove a force for good or evil. How has he been assessed during the century since his death in 1919? Wilbur Davison spoke for many who knew Osler: "We regarded him as perfect." Serious criticisms of Osler began during the closing decades of the twentieth century and crescendoed in 2018 when two Australian physicians argued it is time to unmask him "for the sake of historical truth, the values of science, and the integrity of medicine itself." Presented here are more than 25 criticisms and potential criticisms of Osler, mostly rendered through the lens of "presentism." Readers can use this information to decide whether Osler seems "too good to be true," as has been alleged. Does he still matter, and if so, how? Osler became a "despairing optimist" after World War I, in which he lost his son. He closed his last public address, given in May 1919 on "The Old Humanities and the New Science," with the hope that through the Hippocratic combination of (love of humanity) and (love of science and technology), humankind might somehow find the wisdom () to survive and flourish. Those words became his valedictory, as he died later that year from complications of pneumonia. Osler was voted "the most influential physician in history" in a 2016 survey of North American doctors, but his interests and influence transcend medicine. First edition in English. Probably the most famous classic of plastic and aesthetic surgery published in the 20th century. The original German edition of Joseph's book issued in 1931 is a legendary rarity. This deluxe limited edition English translation was issued in 1987. It publishes the English translation of Joseph's text an…d his original illustrations in a format that follows the German edition page for page. Considering the comprehensive nature of Joseph's text and the huge number of illustrations, this is a significant translation and publishing feat. Elegantly and durably bound with a red leather spine and a sturdy cloth slipcase, it was previously sold for $395 or more per copy. The translation is a superb example of modern book production. As new. Joseph's work, which contains over 1700 illustrations, documents in exhaustive detail the operative methods he devised for correcting deformities of the nose, forehead, eyelids, cheeks, lips and mouth, jaw, ears and breasts. Paul Natvig, Joseph's biographer, describes the work as follows: "[It] is characterized by its scientific and technical thoroughness. It is divided and sub-divided in an extremely detailed, comprehensive and logical manner. Dr. Joseph supplies the appropriate historical background and lists in chronological order the procedures that have been used at each stage of development. He gives meticulous credit to the originators. Following this, he present his own refined technique. He supplies in footnotes the etymology of the terms he employs. In addition to the strictly operative procedures, he pays careful attention to the psychological aspects of facial defects, as in the case of the young Frenchman who sought by means of rhinoplasty to prevent himself from performing a criminal deed. The patient was quoted as saying, ìIf anyone laughs at my nose, I feel that Iím ready to kill him.î Also, the many lavish illustrations in his book are completely honest in their depiction of what he had achieved. Many are photographs and all were left completely unretouched when reproduced. As an example of a perfect nose, Joseph included a profile photograph of his wife, to whom the book is dedicated "(Natvig, pp. 84-85). .

This book, published in an edition of 500 copies, describes a library of technical reports, books, pamphlets, ephemera, letters, typescripts, manuscripts, prints, photographs, blueprints, and medals on the history of computing, networking, and related aspects of telecommunications. The material it describes ranges chronologicall…y from 1613 to about 1970. There are 1411 annotated entries. Few of the bibliographies of scientific and technological classics consulted by twentieth-century science collectors included any representation of computing. Harrison Horblit's One Hundred Books Famous in Science and Printing and the Mind of Man cited only the seventeenth century invention of logarithms by John Napier relative to the history of computing. Bern Dibner's Heralds of Science also cited that and Napier's Rabdologiae. En Francais dans le texte ignored the topic of computing entirely. Hook and Norman's catalogue of The Haskell F. Norman Library of Science and Medicine also included the writings of Napier and a few works by Charles Babbage. Haskell Norman's One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine cited one computer-related reference. Morton's Medical Bibliography, fifth edition, edited by Jeremy Norman, included a handful of references to computing in medicine. Dibner, Printing and the Mind of Man, and Hook and Norman also contained a few references to the telegraph and the telephone. One reason why the traditional reference works for collectors of the history of science ignored computing is that most of these were written around the middle of the twentieth century before computing was pervasive. Dibner first published Heralds of Science in 1955. Horblit based his book on an exhibition at the Grolier Club held in 1958. The Printing and the Mind of Man exhibition was held in 1963. Though we published the catalogue of the Haskell F. Norman library in 1991, Dr. Norman began forming his library around 1955. In book selection he was profoundly influenced by the works just mentioned, and also by William Osler's Bibliotheca Osleriana, posthumously published in 1929, but describing a library formed before Osler's death in 1919. Another work equally influential on Dr. Norman was the catalogue of the library of Harvey Cushing. Virtually the only books relevant to computing in the Osler and Cushing libraries were also the writings of John Napier. Collecting new subjects such as computing, networking and telecommunications involved collecting types of documents that had not typically been included in private libraries of rare science books. To describe a library that broke new paths, combining manuscripts, typescripts, and photographs with printed and duplicated material produced by a wide variety of methods, from traditional letterpress to mimeograph, blueprint, ditto, and photocopying, we found it necessary to employ a variety of bibliographical and organizational techniques that had not typically been combined in this way. These techniques included traditional descriptive bibliography, bio-bibliography, and what might be called descriptive or annotation techniques found in some catalogues of museum or rare book library exhibitions. Throughout the diversity of Origins of Cyberspace we created an elaborate system of cross-references that was only possible in a work of this complexity because the software maintained the integrity of the cross-references throughout the editorial process. When we wrote this book the convergence of electronic media and computing technologies through the Internet had begun so recently that there had been no previous bibliographic effort to document this development for rare book collectors. Nor had there been documented efforts to collect the history of these subjects before the Internet was established. The only significant bibliographies of private collections of rare books concerning aspects of computing or telecommunications were the catalogues of the libraries of Sir Francis Ronalds and Latimer Clark, which were f.
