Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. Contents: Acknowledgements. Preface. Foreword. Introduction. 1. Decision-making under contradictory certainties. I. Welcome to uncertainty: 2. Which way the spiral? 3. Getting to grips with uncertainty. 4. How have we got to grips with uncertainty? II. Knowing where to hit it: 5. The systems approach. 6. A conceptual framework. 7. Some strategic implications. 8. Specific recommendations. III. Rare animals, poor people and big agencies: 9. A one-sided conversation. 10. From monologue to dialogue. References. Index. "The Himalaya, all the experts agree, face serious environmental problems; they are caught in a downward spiral. The rate of fuelwood consumption, for instance, is asserted to be far in excess of the rate at which the forest grows. However, the expert estimates of these two rates vary by such immense factors that we simply cannot say whether the spiral, if it exists, is upward or downward. There is something severely wrong with the Himalaya but we cannot tell what it is. The traditional response - a call for more research - has not worked and the perceived urgency of the situation calls for action now, before it is too late. The challenge is to furnish a non-arbitrary strategic framework for the action. Putting such a framework together calls for a new synthesis of hard and soft science. When, try as you may, you cannot find out what the facts in the Himalaya really are you can still do something. You can find out why it is that you can't find out what they are. The authors begin by showing how it is the institutions and their contradictory problem definitions - the international agencies insisting that there are too many people; the people themselves insisting that there is not enough food - that continually muddle the hard scientists' efforts to pinpoint what is really going on and why. In an important sense, they argue, the institutions are the facts. They then go on to show how a combination of hard and soft approaches - obtainable physical facts correlated with obtainable institutional facts - can provide a framework for action--immediate action. This, because it anticipates the grassroots obstacles that all too often get in the way of conventionally designed development programmes, actually improves on the sorts of hard-fact dominated frameworks that are unobtainable in the Himalaya anyway. The uncertainty is itself the key. That is the surprising, and hopeful, message of this book, which remains as relevant even twenty years after it first appeared.".…

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. Water in Nepal is an account of Nepali society's development efforts over the last two decades seen through the lens of water. Water has normally been understood to be Nepa's biggest and most understood to be Nepal's biggest and most under-exploited resoruce, but Dipak Gyawali questions such beliefs by going beyond the usual practice of government and aid agencies to see water resources development as primarily a construction enterprise. Tehse writings reflect Gyawali's evolution from engineer to economist to cultural theorist and present this national resource as a focal point where history, politics and even religion intersect with engineering and economics. The conventional wisdom that centralised, state-owned utilities are the best isntruments to develop Nepal's water has today been discarded in favour of privatisation. Gyawali uses a cultural Theory framework to argue for a move away from such simplistic pendulum swings to a more pluralised social terrrain where not just the voice of the bureaucracy or the market but also that of a critical civil society is heard. Using the debates of the 1990s, particularly Arun-3 and the Mahakali treaty, the book describes the problems that arise in a poor country without the wherewithal to develop its natural endowment when development ambitions outpace its innate capacity. Soft cover. Zustand: As New. Contents: 1. Introduction. 2. Education. 3. Health. 4. Economic Status. 5. Human Development Indexes. 6. Summary of the Findings. The discourse on social exclusion in Nepal is very ideological, with some authors considering basically all Nepalis as socially excluded except for male Bahuns of hill origin. This is obviously not very useful for targeted economic and social interventions, and this book attempts to provide statistical evidence on what population groups are de facto excluded along a number of economic and social dimensions.…

From the foreword: "In the papers collected here the reader will find the collected wisdom of Nepal's finest historical anthropologist or anthropological historian of his generation. Most Nepali historians use the facts of the present to illuminate the past, but few do so with the sophistication and sensitivity of Prayag Raj Sharma. He argues for long-term continuities of culture and structure, but he is aware of the methodological pitfalls in doing so. Of the three crucibles he identifies which have made modern Nepali culture what it is today--the far west, the Kathmandu Valley, and the Tarai--Prayag Raj Sharma has carried out first-hand research in the first two areas and he has offered new intellectual syntheses and overviews relevant to all three. . . His lucid prose, his classical sociological approach, his engaged but balanced concern, and his deep appreciation of all aspects of Nepal's society and history mean that his corpus will stand for a long time to come as an essential witness to the struggles of post-1950 Nepal to come to terms with its Hindu Past.…

Landlessness. 7. Wages for casual farm laborers. 8. Education. 9. Remittances. 10. Conclusion. References. Appendices. Nepal is in the process of forming a federal state, where the borders of the provinces is one essential but disputed issue. The book discusses underlying economic and social conditions that should be taken into account when the provinces are formed. It is described how the average province poverty levels and related economic and social indicators will depend on the federal map. The general finding is straight forward if there is variation in poverty between districts in a specific area, then a large province that includes both poor and rich districts will have the average poverty level of those districts. As a result models with a large number of provinces will tend to imply a more unequal distribution of poverty between provinces than models with few provinces. In particular one may end up with a very poor Karnali province if the western hills becomes one separate province. …

Index.First published in 1965, this study of foreign aid has now become a recognised classic on the subject. When the author did his research in the early 1960s, Nepal had already begun receiving assistance from an extraordinarily large number of countries and agencies. Donor interest in those initial years was driven mainly by the fact that the country occupied a strategic position as a frontline state against communist China. But, as the author discovered, there were good reasons to doubt the widely accepted assumption that all underdeveloped countries were being swept by a 'revolution of rising expectations'. He also reached the startling conclusion that, on balance, the impact of foreign aid has probably harmed, rather than furthered, Nepal's long-range prospects for economic growth and political stability. The evolution of Nepali society and economy over the last three decades of the 20 century seems to have supported Mihaly's thesis. 238 pp.…

Gaige's acclaimed study of the Tarai and the Nepali state's misdirected and ineffectual attempts at integrating the region into the national mainstream. The theme of the book remains as relevant three decades later, especially at a time when the very essence of Nepali nationalism is being questioned and new forms of co-existence are being negotiated. The introduction by Arjun Guneratne updates the reader on the social and political context in which the book is being re-issued besides highlighting some of the more pertinent issues now at stake in the Tarai, indications of which are scattered throughout Gaige's book." Gender in the Himalaya: Cultural Politics of Gendered Identity, Place and Positionality engages with the vibrant field of feminist scholarship and brings together a collection of papers by scholars who have long-term research relations with communities in the Himalayan region. In considering the Himalaya as a frontier that is constituted by a range of context-specific forces as well as historically and politically positioned actors, the papers engage with the Himalayan region but are at once attentive to trans-local forces that configure gendered relations of work, mobility, mobilization, development and activism. Through a critical reading of colonial and nationalist gendered discourses, the contributors demonstrate how gendered relations and subjects are configured through the projects of development, feminism, regional autonomy, and neo-liberalism more broadly. By drawing on their sustained engagement with specific field sites and participation with various local and non-local interlocutors, the collections offers a grounded assessment of the ways that feminist readings of everyday practices can illuminate cultural politics of difference, inequality, and exclusion. Of additional concern to several of the authors are the politics of knowledge production, including the ethics of transnational feminist scholarship, and the politics of positionality in research and representation.…

Some considerations on the theories of caste and the background of the Licchavi state. 4. The early mediaeval period. 5. Newar rites of passage and festivals. 9. Land, lineage and state. Appendices. Bibliography. Index. This study of mediaeval Nepal Kathmandu Valley attempts to show how over a period of 600 years the interplay of land, lineage and state strongly shaped Newar society, including some of its key institutions such as kinship, guthi, religion and caste as well as their settlement patterns. With a focus on the mediaeval era and using both historical and anthropological methods, the author discusses the gradual development of the Newari language and culture from the Licchavi era until the 1980s. He examines continuities and changes in different aspects of their society such as their rites and festivals, the interlinkages between land and lineage, the dynamics unleashed by Hinduism and Buddhism vying for supremacy, and the interface between state and society. Land, Lineage and State will be an important addition to the understanding of the Newar, who gave rise to arguably the most complex of Himalayan societies of the mediaeval period.…

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Tibetan communities across China are undergoing rapid and potentially irreversible social, economic and cultural changes. This book presents new perspectives on the current situation of Tibetans and provides a baseline for assessing the magnitude and direction of future changes. From a range of disciplinary perspectives the authors provide original analyses based on first hand fieldwork and a careful scrutiny of official documents and data as they examine three key aspects of Tibet's development: pastoral production labor and social policy. This collection of essays represents the most up-to-date and comprehensive assessment of development transitions on the Tibetan Plateau, and forms an important contribution to development studies of contemporary societies undergoing rapid change within China.…

Foldout map, black and white photographic illustrations, xii + 443pp, minimal foxing edges, still a very good paperback copy. "Newar Society brings to the Anglophone world French anthropologist Gérard Toffin's work on the Newars. The book is of extreme importance for Newar studies, and it is also beneficial for other scholars who are interested in Nepal's unique form of South Asian Himalayan culture. Toffin is director of research at the National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris and has been conducting research in Nepal for more than thirty-five years. His classic Société et religion chez les Néwars du Nepal is based on research in the village of Pyangaon and the small city of Panauti. Newar Society widens his reach and is founded on a number of different research locations in the Kathmandu and Banepa valleys. As the book's introduction states, the study gives "an overall picture of some of the essential features of Newar society." (Publisher's description).…

Soft cover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Introduction by Chaitanya Mishra. 1. Introduction: Locating agency in 'Name Keeping'. 2. The setting: the place, people and the issues. 3. The cultural and economic context of Nepali women. 4. The history and politics of women's development. 5. Programme implementation in the Kamala Valley. 6. Unintended consequences: domesticating the public, socializing the domestic. 7. Conclusions: the motivations for memoreality. Glossary of Nepali terms. Bibliography. This is an ethnographic study of a group of rural women from south-central Nepal brought together by a development intervention. It details how these women used their collective identity forged through an income-generating project to address issues such as women's property rights, domestic violence, gambling and alcoholism, and even political representation. In examining the intended as well as unintended consequences of an externally initiated 'women's development project', Shah assesses the structural limitations of a development enterprise while also focusing on what he terms the creative agency of the project beneficiaries. This agency becomes apparent in a number of ways, including the construction and projection of memory into the domain of social significance, or 'memoreality'; the ready adoption of transnational flows of discourses, resources and legitimacies; and the use of the tools of development to politicise other arenas of socio-political life. A Project of Memoreality will serve as an important contribution to understanding the dynamics of women's activism in Nepal as well as the complexities of the development industry. …

Index to maps. From the preface: This book is by way of being an introduction to Deopatan and the Pasupatiksetra, Pasupati's domain or the holy field surrounding the temple of Pasupatinatha. To a certain extent it summarizes the results of our own separate books on the topic, which for academic and administrative reasons had to be in German1 and Nepali2 given this unfortunate situation, we felt that we should make at least some of our findings accessible to and English-speaking readership. However, we did not feel that repeating all the descriptive details, exact historical dates and facts, tables, illustrations or bibliographical references presented in our previous publications would here be justified. We therefore decided to publish jointly the maps of the Pasupatiksetra for orientation purposes along with a short introduction into the ritual implications of the Pasupatiksetra, the whole addressed not only to readers familiar with the cultural situation in Nepal but also to a more general public.3 We have taken the liberty to use extracts from our books and articles on Deopatan published elsewhere.…
