GURDJIEFF'S writing is permeated through and through with certain questions that also occupied Mesmer, maybe most notably, the question of influences, which perhaps reaches its highest expression, in Gurdjieff's astonishing and powerful idea of reciprocal maintenance. This is an idea which runs through Gurdjieff's "All and Everything" as a constant theme in various forms. Mesmer, too, in his writings, was unceasingly occupied with the idea of reciprocal exchange between "bodies" - from celestial bodies, to human beings, to animals and plants - in the form of incoming and outgoing currents, as he saw it. The idea of influences and reciprocal maintenance is explored here especially using the subject of attention and the connection with interpersonal influence in the field of healing, a field in which Gurdjieff was also a master, and itself inextricably bound with inner work on oneself. When reading Gurdjieff's writing, it is profitable and indeed necessary to learn to read it in more than one way, to see literal and non-literal meanings, even at the same time. It may be that one can also do this usefully with Mesmer's work, and that working with the ideas of Mesmer, theoretically and practically, can help one to dig deeper into the ground of Gurdjieff's ideas.

According to Gurdjieff, sex energy is the final result of the transformation of our ordinary food and drink. It is also the source of all higher energy and of Will, and is necessary to create a soul. The ordinary person carries out incomplete absorption and transformation of active elements from the three being-foods. The small amount of energy produced is either automatically used up, wasted, or tainted. Ordinary human physiology is the physiology of abnormality. A.R.Orage pointed out that work on oneself produces fifty percent more mental energy and three times more emotional and sex energy than before. Here various questions are examined concerning the transformation of the three being-foods with reference to material in Gurdjieff's writing and oral teaching, and that of J.G.Bennett, P.D.Ouspensky and A.R.Orage. Information from the various sources often appears discrepant, perhaps intentionally so. Subjects considered include a composite food diagram, "food for real man," vegetarianism, "the most important part of the second-being food," evolution and involution of sex energy, half-beings, and others.

This short introduction to magnetic hypnotherapy provides an overview of a modern approach to the ancient healing art of animal magnetism, rediscovered by Mesmer in the eighteenth century. Historical gems are embedded in a text which seeks to bring critical thinking to the experience of remarkable phenomena. Through magnetic hypnotherapy, one could say that a different atmosphere is created: an atmosphere of calm that enables healing. This is perhaps especially necessary and beneficial for our time.

The material is written with a questioning attitude, is well-referenced, and has an aim of seeking to fathom the gist of what Gurdjieff wished to communicate to us. It is especially occupied with two interrelated strands: 1. Everything related to what could be called "Gurdjieff's Medicine." 2. Hypnosis, magnetism, and consciousness.
