This instrument began to be built up in the immediate aftermath of the 1914-18 war, and it was thanks to the tenacity and inventiveness of a group of officers, including future generals like Lutz and Guderian, that, on rising to power in 1933, Hitler found ready the neces- sary basis on which to build up a tank force worthy of the name. Thus, from 1935 to 1945, over thirty armored divisions came into being. Being endowed with quality staffing, and high-perfor- mance equipment employed following revolutionary principles, they played a decisive role in the series of victories in Poland and France, in the Balkans, in north Africa and the Soviet Union.
