Japanischsprachiges Magazin mit durchgehend farbigen Fotos. Inhalt - "Suiboku-ga, black-and-white painting, is an unique, Oriental Art. One attempts to draw realistic and lively pictures using only water and Chinese ink. In China, it has long been believed that there are "five different colours" in ink. Many Chinese ink paintings were drawn during the Sung and Yüan dynasties. It was in the middle of the Kamakura era that this form of art was first introduced into Japan by Zen monks. At first, it was merely an avocation of the monks, but soon the samurai came to admire it. In the Muromachi era, there appeared painters under shogunal patronage and even an academy was set up at the initiative of the shogun. About this time, Sesshu went to China to continue his study of Suiboku-ga which he had began in Kyoto. Upon his return, he traveled extensively throughout Japan. He left a great many fine paintings. One example is Sansui-Chokan - Long Landscape Scroll - which is 15 meters long. This scroll is considered to be his best work, as it reveals Sesshu's attainment in Zen through the drawings of men and women in harmony with nature in all seasons. After Sesshu, Suiboku-ga became well-known among people throughout Japan. Bunjin-ga, drawings by literary artists in the Edo period, were influenced by Suiboku-ga as modern Japanese paintings are today." Special Supplements: (1) Landscape painted by Sesshu (2) Pinge Grove painted on a folding screen by Hasegawa Tohaku (3) Cormorant pianted by Miyamoto Musashi ja Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Emperor Kammu moved the capital from Nara to Kyoto in A.D. 794. Since then, Kyoto has been the seat of the Imperial court for over 1,000 years until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Particularly, literature, including such a noted work as the Tale of Genji, and other colorful and graceful arts and crafts flourished in Kyoto in the Heian period from the 8th century to the 12th century around the Imperial court and the nobility. This issue presents the readers with those cultural works - picture scrolls, pictures on slidign and folding sceens, ukiyoye wood-block prints which are associated with the events which occurred in Kyoto during its 1,000 year history. Fortunately, Kyoto was spared during World War II, so that the old streets of the city still remain today. The City, surrounded by gently-sloping hills and watered by the Kamo river and other rivers, is rich in seasonal changes in scenery- cherry flowers in spring and tree leaves turning crimson in autumn - and this attracts many visitors to it. the editor hopes that you will visit Kyoto some day with this special issue in hand. Japanischsprachiges Magazin mit durchgehend farbigen Fotos. Inhalt - "During the military expedition of Toyotomi-Hideyoshi's armies to Korea, Korean potters, who were forcibly brought to Japan opened their kilns at Karatsu and Hagi. In 1616, Li Sam Pyong discovered white porcelain ore and white porcelains with painted pictures on them became very popula. Further, in 1644, Sakaida-Kakiemon succeeded in producing red-colored porcelains. With these technical innovations, the porcelain-making industry flourished in Japan. Manry porcelains were shipped from the port of Imari to various parts othe country and to foreign countries, too, where they were called "Imari". The name of "Imari" porcelains came to be known throughout Japan and the world, thanks to the active commercial activities of burgeoning merchants in the middle of the Yedo period and the commercial agents of Holland's United East-India Company based in Jakarta. Section I shows Imari porcelains rich in variety and colorful in designö "Kakiemon" porcelains which had become graceful and simple in tone since the creation of red-colored porcelainsö "Nabeshima" porcelains which were produced form the kilns operated in Arita by the Nabeshima Clan, a feudal government which paid much attention to the devlopment of the ceramic industry and sought to attain perfection in pottery: and porcelains with unique qualities produced in the neighboring districts of Imari, such as MIkawachi and Kameyama. Also shown in this section are Kutani porcealins which are marked by strong lines, deep colors and vigorous design. The art of porcelain-making found its way from Arita in Kyushu to Kutani in the mountainoous areas of Ishikawa Prefecture. SEction II entitled "Colored Pictures Exported" introduces to the readers many "Iman" and "Kakiemon" porcelains exported aboard ships of the East-India Company of the Netherlands, which was the only trade partner country of Japan during the Yedo period. Shown here are porcelains with foreign design, made to order from foreign clients, and also "Kakiemon" imitations made by foreign kilns, such as those at Delft in the Netherlands, Chelsea in England, and Chantilly in France. Section III shows five moder n potters hwo today uphold the great tradition of Imar, Kakiemon, Nabeshima, and Kutani tarditions, together with their works. They are Sakaida-Kakiemon XIII - Imaizumi-Imaemon XIII - Fujio Kitade and Hakujo Ono ja Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
