Holmes, Urban Tigner / Schutz, Alexander Herman. A history of the French language. Columbus, Ohio: H. L. Hedrick, 254 E. Oakland Avenue, 1935, 1935, 196pp., worn and wobbly blue cloth, a few minor pencil notations in text, previous owner's name: Kathryn Elizabeth Higgins, 203 Smith Dormitory. Full publication by Farrar and Rinehart was in 1938 but this edition in a mimeographed reproduced typescript print seems to have been published repeatedly in the 1930s for use in college courses. Designed as an introductory manual for juniors and seniors, as Holmes noted in his dispute with Mario Pei over the book. But "an extraordinarily successful condensation of this complex subject" according to Gifford P. Owen (1939), it was followed in 1940 by a 122pp. Source book of illustrative texts.

Until cousin Joey and his handsome patron, Mr. Benedict Hawkins, arrive from America.Mr. Hawkins, a half-American businessman who attended Harvard after receiving his education at Eton, is an only child who is charmed by the loving interactions between the Thackery family members. The Thackery matriarch decides to break tradition and let Kitty make her London debut after he is warmly welcomed into their group.Detective Inspector Tobias Thackery, who is based in London, has organised his family into a spy network in an effort to track down his wayward sister, who may or may not be associated with anarchists. Kitty infiltrates this plan, her spirit of adventure curbed by polite society. Although the risks are more and more personal than she anticipated, she starts to relish them as part of her quest for fulfilment.
