In den WarenkorbSoftcover. Zustand: Fair. Sheet music. Folio. Single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Notched and worn along the fold from once being bound within an album as a result the insert remains attached to the front cover, rear cover detached but present, dampstaining at the top corner and along the bottom half of…the front cover affecting throughout (though the music remains perfectly legible), large tears along the inner margin of the rear cover not affecting any music, and a music shop stamp on the front cover, a complete but fair only copy. An instrumental piece for piano. The front cover states, "As taught at Mr. A. Dodworth's Academy." A 1928 retrospective in *The New Yorker* gives us some insight into Mr. Dodworth and his Academy, "New York matrons?if there are any left?who went to the historic dancing school conducted by Mr. Allen Dodworth, still uncross their feet, and fold their hands carefully in their laps, whenever his name is mentioned. In an unladylike position, it would be unthinkable even to remember Mr. Dodworth . Now we shudder at the thought of what that stately gentleman would have thought of the swing and abandon, the snapping of fingers and flinging of heels?when our children do the Charleston." A rare piece; *OCLC* locates only a single holding and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade.

In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. Octavo (23cm.); publisher's tan printed wrappers; iv,112pp. Extremities a bit chipped and toned, contemporary inscription of the Chapter County Cabinet to upper cover, else Very Good, internally fine. Distributor's cancel tipped to title page: "From the Publication Committee of the Philadelphia Society for Allevia…ting the Miseries of Public Prisons." Lengthy argument in favor of separation in prisons based on a plan being incrementally introduced in the smaller prisons in Europe. William Parker Foulke (1816-1865) was a Philadelphia attorney appointed in 1860 as delegate to the Convention of State Prison Wardens where was formed society for which he was to have been the Corresponding Secretary, though the commencement of the Civil War curtailed any activities as such. Nevertheless, Foulke was able to publish this detailed paper in which he presented a modernized approach to prison reform, "Starting from the acknowledged postulates that it is impossible to form a reliable judgment on the value of outward signs of penitence; that a strict observation of prison rules and discipline can never, by itself, be a fair criterion to enable us to judge how a prisoner will conduct himself after he has obtained liberty; that suffering is an essential element to any useful prison discipline, on whatever general theory imprisonment takes place, he criticises the whole ground plan of the New Penal Code" (J.P. Lesley, "Obituary Notice of WM. Parker Foulke," "Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society," Vol. 10, no. 80 (July, 1868), p. 489).

In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. First Edition. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - BRECHT'S AMERICAN CHAMPION FROM THEORY TO PERFORMANCE This singular four-part publisher's archive maps a decade-long intellectual partnership at the center of the post-war New York theatrical avant-garde. BRECHT TAKES THE AMERICAN STAGE +++ The Realized Manifesto - The 1961… Columbia Players program represents the physical realization of Eric Bentley's lifelong campaign to establish Bertolt Brecht within the canon of American drama. By placing a photograph of his collaboration with Brecht at the center of the publication, Bentley visually asserted his role as the principal interpreter of Brechtian theory for English-speaking audiences. WHERE THE STAGE MET THE PUBLISHER +++ The Publisher's Intersection - The archive derives its greatest significance from its preservation within the papers of Horizon Press founder Ben Raeburn. Here, public theatrical performance intersects with the private planning of an independent publisher committed to bringing the same avant-garde ideas into print. A DECADE OF EXPERIMENTATION +++ The Arc of Innovation - Spanning 1956 to 1967, the archive follows Bentley as he introduced Brecht to university audiences, reinvented European opera for Off-Broadway stages, premiered experimental scripts, and corresponded candidly with Raeburn about the legal, financial, and practical realities of sustaining serious theatre. THE ARCHIVE: AT A GLANCE +++ Components - Four-piece research archive comprising an inscribed presentation libretto (1956), an Off-Broadway production program (1961), a highly candid typed letter signed (1965), and a scarce Greenwich Village performance invitation (1967). Together they document Eric Bentley's work as playwright, translator, critic, and advocate for Bertolt Brecht. THE PRESENTATION COPY +++ Orpheus in the Underworld - First printing of Eric Bentley's libretto for Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld (New York: Program Publishing Company, 1956). Inscribed on the front cover, "To Ben - From Eric," establishing the volume as a presentation copy to Horizon Press founder Ben Raeburn. Includes contemporary editorial annotations and a probable authorial pencil correction. THE PERFORMANCE RECORD +++ Brecht Comes to Columbia - Original eight-page program for the Columbia Players' 1961 production of Nikolai Gogol's The Gamblers and Bertolt Brecht's The Exception and the Rule in Bentley's English translations, directed by Isaiah Sheffer with music by Stefan Wolpe. Includes Bentley's essay, his translation of Brecht's poem To Those Born Later, and a remarkable photograph showing Bentley working directly with Brecht during a production of Mother Courage. THE PUBLISHER'S LETTER +++ Behind the Scenes - A revealing typed letter signed, dated August 27, 1965, discussing publishing strategy with Ben Raeburn. Bentley weighs the competing interests of Knopf and Beacon Press while reflecting-with characteristic wit-on his own literary legacy and future projects. THE GREENWICH VILLAGE INVITATION +++ Opening Night - Scarce invitation issued by the H B Playwrights Foundation for the April 1967 presentation of Commitments. The advisory board-including Boris Aronson, Saul Bellow, Leonard Bernstein, Herbert Berghof, Uta Hagen, and Hume Cronyn-documents the extraordinary artistic circle surrounding Bentley during the height of Off-Broadway experimentation. PROVENANCE: Preserved intact in the estate of Horizon Press founder Ben Raeburn. TRANSCRIPTIONS: Complete transcription of the 1965 correspondence available upon request. SCHOLARLY FEATURES - DESIGN, SCHOLARSHIP & INFLUENCE THE AUTHORITY TO SPEAK FOR BRECHT - The centerpiece of the 1961 Columbia Players program is Eric Bentley's essay, "A Message from Eric Bentley," accompanied by his translation of Brecht's poem To Those Born Later. Even more significant is the inclusion of a rare 1950 photograph showing Bentley working directly alongside Bertolt Brecht during a production of Mother Courage. Together, the essay and photograph establish Bentley not merely as Brecht's translator, but as his principal American interpreter and advocate. OFFENBACH REIMAGINED - The inscribed 1956 libretto documents Bentley's inventive approach to adapting Jacques Offenbach for American audiences. Contemporary reviews printed within the volume celebrate both the wit and audacity of his English text, with the New York Journal-American calling it "the sauciest libretto ever heard in the opera house," while the New York World-Telegram praised its "highly clever" and at times "highly naughty" verse. The volume demonstrates Bentley's determination to make European classics speak with a fresh theatrical voice. THE BUSINESS OF THE AVANT-GARDE - The August 27, 1965 Typed Letter Signed (TLS) offers an unusually candid view of the practical realities behind serious publishing. Bentley discusses strategy with Ben Raeburn as he weighs the competing interests of Knopf and Beacon Press, revealing the negotiations, permissions, and commercial concerns required to sustain avant-garde literature. His characteristic wit emerges in the memorable aside: "What would be the best occasion and date for a Bentley on Theatre? I am not Dead-that wd be a superb occasion-but I am not intending to oblige." GREENWICH VILLAGE'S INNER CIRCLE - The 1967 invitation from the H B Playwrights Foundation extends beyond a simple theatrical announcement. Its distinguished advisory board-including Boris Aronson, Saul Bellow, Herbert Berghof, Leonard Bernstein, Hume Cronyn, Uta Hagen, and Paul A. Porter-documents the remarkable community of artists, directors, musicians, writers, and patrons surrounding Bentley during the height of Off-Broadway's creative renaissance. Preserved with the archive, it provides tangible evidence of the close-knit artistic network that nurtured experimental American theatre. Subjects: Bertolt Brecht, Eric Bentley, Ben Raeburn, Horizon Press, Off-Broadway History, Columbia University, HB Playwrights Foundation, Uta Hagen, Her. Signed.
