Softcover. Zustand: Fair. Sheet music. Folio. Single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Notched and worn along the fold from once being bound within an album as a result the insert remains attached to the front cover, rear cover detached but present, dampstaining at the top corner and along the bottom half of the front cover affecting throughout (though the music remains perfectly legible), large tears along the inner margin of the rear cover not affecting any music, and a music shop stamp on the front cover, a complete but fair only copy. An instrumental piece for piano. The front cover states, "As taught at Mr. A. Dodworth's Academy." A 1928 retrospective in *The New Yorker* gives us some insight into Mr. Dodworth and his Academy, "New York matrons?if there are any left?who went to the historic dancing school conducted by Mr. Allen Dodworth, still uncross their feet, and fold their hands carefully in their laps, whenever his name is mentioned. In an unladylike position, it would be unthinkable even to remember Mr. Dodworth . Now we shudder at the thought of what that stately gentleman would have thought of the swing and abandon, the snapping of fingers and flinging of heels?when our children do the Charleston." A rare piece; *OCLC* locates only a single holding and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade.

First Edition. Octavo (23cm.); publisher's tan printed wrappers; iv,112pp. Extremities a bit chipped and toned, contemporary inscription of the Chapter County Cabinet to upper cover, else Very Good, internally fine. Distributor's cancel tipped to title page: "From the Publication Committee of the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons." Lengthy argument in favor of separation in prisons based on a plan being incrementally introduced in the smaller prisons in Europe. William Parker Foulke (1816-1865) was a Philadelphia attorney appointed in 1860 as delegate to the Convention of State Prison Wardens where was formed society for which he was to have been the Corresponding Secretary, though the commencement of the Civil War curtailed any activities as such. Nevertheless, Foulke was able to publish this detailed paper in which he presented a modernized approach to prison reform, "Starting from the acknowledged postulates that it is impossible to form a reliable judgment on the value of outward signs of penitence; that a strict observation of prison rules and discipline can never, by itself, be a fair criterion to enable us to judge how a prisoner will conduct himself after he has obtained liberty; that suffering is an essential element to any useful prison discipline, on whatever general theory imprisonment takes place, he criticises the whole ground plan of the New Penal Code" (J.P. Lesley, "Obituary Notice of WM. Parker Foulke," "Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society," Vol. 10, no. 80 (July, 1868), p. 489).

Unbound. Zustand: Good. Broadside. Tall folio (7" x 18¾"). Printed with display type and letterpress on thin white paper with a decorative border. Some creasing and very light foxing, good or better. An early broadside advertisement for a Delaware lottery that was part of a "New and Splendid Scheme" sweeping through the country in the mid-19th Century, later denounced by anti-vice activist Anthony Comstock as "the bogus lotteries" in his 1880 book *Frauds Exposed*. A scarce survival, printed on fragile paper.
