In den WarenkorbCecil, who was the best man at Churchill's wedding, was regarded as the finest orator of his generation. See his entry, and that of Ross, in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 4to. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. Addressed to 'Dear Mr Provost' and signed 'Hugh Cecil'. He apologises for the late reply, but has 'been ill and until… yesterday was strictly confined to my room here'. He has received too many letters to be able to reply to each. 'I therefore venture to enclose to you a brief Memorandum which I have drawn up dealing with the recent crisis in Foreign Affairs'. It is not clear what Cecil has done to elicit such a response, although 1935 was the year in which he published his 'The Communion Service as it might be'. Perhaps "Foreign Affairs" involved the Italians in Abyssinia(?).

In den WarenkorbDupré is thinking of retaining Brett as architect in the rebuilding of a house on an attractive site, and the two items deal with the practicalities. Both signed 'Lionel Brett', and both in fair condition, lightly aged. ONE: TLS. 2pp, 4to, Folded three times. Forty-two lines of text. Addressed to Dupré at The Lodge, Windlesham,…Withyham, Sussex. Deals firstly with 'the estimate for demolition', with comments 'On the technical side', before moving on to the question of 'salvage materials'. Continues: 'As far as rebuilding is concerned it is never easy nowadays to work inside an absolutely rigid price ceiling. Building costs are still going up and it is sadly rare for the job not to cost more than the estimate. For £3,000 one could certainly build a three-bedroomed house with a decent sized living room if the whole thing was kept very simple, and I would suggest that the thing to do would be to start from the barest minimum with a view to adding and improving as time goes on.' He concludes by pointing out that 'it would be cheaper to build from scratch on an ordinary plot, if you can find one'. Ends by stating the question facing Dupré: 'whether the beauty of this particular site is worth an extra something between £500 and £1,000 or, in other words, whether you would rather have a simple and small house on this site than a rather better house on a worse site'. TWO: ALS. 1p, 4to. Folded twice. He suggests that any firm Dupré uses should be 'subject to survey', 'so that we can be sure the "party" wall is stable before you are committed'.

In den WarenkorbSee her own entry in the Oxford DNB, as a 'political wife', and that of Yonge, whose 'Unknown to History: A Story of the Captivity of Mary of Scotland' was published in 1882. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. Signed 'G Salisbury' and addressed to 'Miss Yonge'. In good condition, with negligible remnants of windowpane mount adhering at edges.… 'One of the original casket letters was found at Hatfield some years ago by Dr Brewer who was then looking over the papers on behalf of the Record Office to which he belonged - Also a copy of another - of the same date. Both these papers were apparently used at Mary's trial - & the original one is docketted in Burghleys hand - Whether it is in Marys handwriting or is a forgery - probably of Maitland of Lettingtons - I cannot say.' She continues for another page, with reference to Queen Elizabeth, and an invitation to Yonge to visit Hatfield.
