Item # 005201 of particular interest: "Lord Minto" by John Buchan. [In May 1869, the author Oxenden was elected bishop of Montreal and Metropolitan of Canada by the Canadian provincial synod. He was consecrated in Westminster Abbey on 1 August, and installed in Christ Church Cathedral, Montreal on 5 September].

A biography of Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of Frederick William III. With several lengthy introductory chapters on the history of Prussia, chronicling its rise to power and the reigns of various rulers, including Frederick I and II, among others. Also included are several chapters on the Napoleonic Wars and Napoleon's campaign in Austria, Egypt and elsewhere. One of Germany's most popular queens, she was noted for her active role in the Prussian government, even attempting to negotiate terms with Napoleon after Prussia's losses to France in the Napoleonic wars. With several lengthy introductory chapters on the history of Prussia, chronicling its rise to power and the reigns of various rulers, including Frederick I and II, among others. With several chapters on the Napoleonic Wars. GOOD+ condition. Uneven fading and darkening to the leather on the spine, with volume 2 being a bit lighter in color. Minor fading and rubbing to the cloth. Small ink stain to the rear of volume one. Moderate to heavy scuffing along the extremities and hinges, with the leather being rather worn in places. The tail of the spine of volume 1 is bumped and chipped. Interiors clean and solid with minor toning to the paper.

Two parts in one (the second part is 'seventh thousand'), square 12mo, pp. 270; [4], 292, 6 (ads); wood-engraved frontispiece and a number of illustrations throughout; contemporary half roan over marbled boards, gilt-lettered spine; spine rather scuffed, but the binding is sound. "Bevan oversaw the religious education of children on her father's estates, at Fosbury, in Wiltshire and in East Barnet and her interest in educational writing grew from that experience. She developed her own method of teaching children to read based on an early kind of 'flash cards' rather than the traditional hornbook, with her Reading Disentangled (1834), a set of phonics flashcards, being credited by some as the first flashcards. Her teaching notes were collected and appeared as such works as Peep of Day and Reading Without Tears. According to Todd Pruzan, "For the better part of the 19th century, Mrs. Mortimer was something of a literary superstar to an impressionable audience, both in her native England and beyond" (Wikipedia).

A very good copy in an attractive early leather binding. Finely bound by Riviere and Son in full dark blue morocco. Raised bands to spine. Compartments lettered in gilt. Prelims very lightly soiled otherwise a clean and sound copy of these very scarce first hand personal memoirs of the Crimea War.
