Hardcover. Zustand: Fine condition as new. Limited edition as stated. Folio. Unpaginated. Original gray pebbled cloth with black lettering on cover and spine, in original photo-illustrated dustjacket, in orange tissue paper and publisher's cardboard slipcase. Design by Sam Haskins. Limited edition of 1,500, not numbered. Extravagant rendering of nude photography in stunning settings with special effects. Elements of some photographs were taken separately and printed together. The granular effect in prints was not attained by the orthodox method of coarse-grained film and developer but by substituting a five hundred watt photoflood for the normal lamp in Haskins' Durst condenser-type enlarger and then enlarging only very small portions of the image on the negative. The prison set in the story of Kate was designed by Haskins' eight-year-old son Ludwig. Haskins' second book, printed in photogravure.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. London, Haskins Press, 1975 ('Limited Edition')/ 1965. Large quarto, [155] pages, almost entirely comprising reproductions of Haskins' photographs. Grey papered boards lettered in black; a fine copy with the excellent dustwrapper (unevenly sunned about the spine and rear panel, with minimal wear to the head of the rear hinge). Number 549 of 1500 copies signed by the photographer. A contemporary review in 'The Guardian' stated that '"Cowboy Kate" is something new in photography: with great technical virtuosity, extreme selectivity, a poet's insight, and an artist's eye, Sam Haskins has produced a photographic fable or allegory'. And if 'The Guardian' is not your newspaper, the 'British Journal of Photography' said 'Sam Haskins has had the talent, stature, vitality - and the discipline - to cut figure photography free from the cliches, hesitancies, and vulgarities that continually inhibit it'.

New edition of a book originally published in 1965. One of 1500 copies numbered and signed by the photographer; in this case he has dated his signature '91 which suggests it may have taken some time to sell out the print run. Folio. Unpaginated. Black and white photographs which established a style which still exerts its influence today.Fine in fine dustwrapper.

Limited edition. 350x270mm. Unpaginated [pp156]. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. A seminal book in the history of photography, fashion, design, soft-focus erotica and social history. Although Cowboy Kate is clearly a work of its time (mid 1960s) what lends it an eternal charm is the light touch humour that defines (for good or ill) the British attitude to nudity and sex.
Haskins Sam.
