Neuware - A professing pagan in an aggressively Christian empire, a friend of the emperor Julian and acquaintance of St. Basil, and a potent spokesman for private and political causes, Libanius has much to tell us about the tumultuous world of the 4th century. Born in Antioch to a wealthy family steeped in the traditions of Hellenism, Libanius rose to fame as a teacher of the classics. In his lifetime, he was an acknowledged master of the art of letter writing, and today his letters offer a vivid picture of the culture and political intrigues of the eastern empire. A. F. Norman selects an eighth of the 1,550 extant letters. The letters are complemented by Libanius's.

Neuware - When Sigmund Freud was nearly seventy and reflecting upon his life, he noted in 'Selbstdarstellung' that during his youth he was consumed with a passion for knowledge that had more to do with human relationships than with natural objects. This collection of nearly eighty letters, written by Freud to his boyhood chum Eduard Silberstein, attests to that earlier, more whimsical life and to the existence of a deeply sensitive, observant youth.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - During the 1991 Gulf War, pundits and experts scrambled unsuccessfully to explain Iraq's 'claim' to Kuwait. In a lucid and measured account of a complex historical and geographic drama that culminated in Operation Desert Storm, David Finnie elucidates the long Kuwaiti-Iraqi border dispute and lays Saddam Hussein's dubious claim to rest. He also raises larger questions about European colonialism and about the creation of new nation-states in the Middle East in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Finnie vividly portrays how arbitrary the drawing of frontiers can be, and how they come to serve internal, regional, and international rivalries and ambitions. This history begins in the eighteenth century, when Kuwait was first settled by nomads from the Arabian desert. Finnie describes the country's growing prosperity under a merchant oligarchy, then shows how the Kuwaitis, seeking British protection from the sprawling Ottoman Empire, came to serve England's imperial strategy. He details the ways in which Britain parlayed its mandatory control of Iraq and its protectorate over Kuwait to curb the larger nation's ambitions and to ensure Kuwait's independence under British auspices. A fresh look at British diplomatic documents reveals how Whitehall covered its tracks, heading off the Iraqis, obfuscating League of Nations proceedings, and confounding scholars and researchers down to the present day. Pursuing his story through Britain's withdrawal from the Persian Gulf and Iraq's 1963 recognition of Kuwait's boundaries, Finnie examines the United Nations' postwar measures to secure the frontier in the face of Iraq's continuing pressure for better access to Gulf waters.

They provide intriguing examples and research evidence on the young child's invocation of imaginary friends, the adolescent's daring, rule-governed games, and the adult's private imagery and inner thought. In chapters that will be important to parents and policymakers, the authors discuss television and the imagination, the healing function of play, and the effects of playfulness and creativity throughout the life span.

In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In this monumental intellectual biography, Frank Sulloway demonstrates that Freud always remained, despite his denials, a biologist of the mind; and, indeed, that his most creative inspirations derived significantly from biology. Sulloway analyzes the political aspects of the complex myth of Freud as psychoanalytic hero as it served to consolidate the analytic movement. This is a revolutionary reassessment of Freud and psychoanalysis.

In den WarenkorbBuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Searching out the private man as well as the public figure, this elegantly written biography follows Henry Murray through his discoveries and triumphs as a pioneer in the field of clinical psychology, as a co-founder of Harvard's Psychological Clinic, the co-inventor of the 'Thematic Apperception Test,' and a biographer of Herman Melville. Murray's fascination with Melville's troubled genius, his wartime experiences in the O.S.S., and his close friendships with Lewis Mumford and Conrad Aiken all come to the fore in this masterly reconstruction of a life. And always, at the heart of this story, Robinson finds Murray's highly erotic and mystical relationship with Christiana Morgan. 'Love's Story Told' penetrates to the heart of a brilliant figure in American intellectual life at mid-century, as he dives deeply into the unconscious, testing in work and love the limits of self-exploration.
