Erstausgabe
First edition, first printing. Publisher's original green cloth with titles in white to the upper board. A very good copy, the binding firm with a little rubbing to the boards and minor wear to the corners. The slightly shaken contents with some spotting to the preliminary pages are otherwise clean throughout and free from any previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. An unusual work by this prominent Victorian physician outlining the various abuses of animals at the hands of man, including killing animals for food and clothing, the use of eggs and milk, blood-sports, vivisection and petkeeping, as well as offering a consideration of the idea of "animals' souls". Demonstrating a clear unease regarding the exploitation of animals in modern society, but also an unwillingness to embrace full-throttled reform, Wilks remains somewhat pained and noncommittal throughout, a standpoint likely representative of many during the period, and providing an interesting window into the contemporary battle between modern ethics and long-standing custom. An uncommon title. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

First edition, first impression, presentation copy of the very scarce large paper issue on handmade paper, inscribed, "EMD from FCC, March 1910", on the first blank, the recipient being Elinor Monsell Darwin (wife of the poet's half-brother Bernard Darwin), and Irish illustrator who worked with Yeats and the Dun Emer Press. Elinor executed the frontispiece for Cornford's next book. Frances Cornford (1886-1960, née Frances Crofts Darwin - granddaughter of Charles, married the poet Francis Cornford in 1909) was a close friend of Rupert Brooke, and an aspiring poet in her own right. This publication, Cornford's second book, following the rare Holtbury Idyll (1908), and first poetry collection, includes her poem "Youth", later titled "On Rupert Brooke" ("A young Apollo, golden-haired, / Stands dreaming on the verge of strife, / Magnificently unprepared / For the long littleness of life"), as well as the notorious "To a Fat Lady Seen from a Train", which became a much anthologized (and parodied) piece. Large paper issue not in Anderson. Small quarto. Original cloth backing grey paper boards, lettered in black on spine and front cover, grey endpapers. Spine tanned, some minor marks to covers, extremities a little rubbed, a few spots within but on the whole very fresh; a very good copy.
