Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Text in English. 96 pp. Small tear and scratching to the dust jacket. Edge wear. Dedication on the front free endpaper. Ernst displays great technical virtuosity in his work. To achieve evocative textural effects, for example, he used rubbings of grained wood…, canvas, stone coins, and even leaves. This use of frottage' and 'grattage' also has roots in his childhood since he became aware of the inspirational value of a textured surface when all sorts of images were conjured up by a piece of grained wood during the delirium of fever when he was suffering from an attack of measles. After this Ernst continued to be able to summon up images by contemplating textured surfaces. Underlying Ernst's painterly ability and the vivid imagery of his irrational world, the author sees an uneasy search for some kind of understanding and interpretation of the place of mankind in a universe which Ernst sometimes seems to represent as a limbo in the aftermath of some cataclysmic event and at other times as nightmarish chaos. Giuseppe Gatt, internationally known as a writer in the field of art, provides us with a valuable account of the work and development of this intriguing and compelling modern artist, well illustrated by 41 black-and-white figures and 40 pages of colour reproductions.
