[1]f, ii, vi, [2], 336 pp; iv, 380 pp. Contemporary Irish bindings of calf, the spines divided into six panels by raised bands, lettered in the second on blue goatskin labels, the edges of the boards tooled with a blind roll, plain endleaves and edges. (Rubbed, patches of insect activity at the foot of the covers). A very good copy in a distinctive Irish calf binding, complete with the characteristic patches of insect activity. First published in London in 1770, this is the only other 18th century edition. It is rare with ESTC locating 14 copies, with a few notable absentees such as the British Library, Trinity College Dublin and Yale. Arthur Young visited Ireland in 1776 and the following year returned as resident agent to Lord Kingsborough, with responsibility for supervising a huge estate at Mitchelstown to the north of Cork. He stayed a year and set up an ambitious programme of improvements to the estate. His 'A Tour in Ireland' was published in 1780, and "has since become a valuable source as one of the few accounts of conditions in Ireland at this time. Among others subjects Young had much to say on commercial policy and the activities of the Dublin Society; and in addition Young attacked the practice of subletting land to middlemen and made some interesting observations on the living conditions of the poor" - (ODNB).…

Tight American pocket edition of two titles by the English minister and hymn writer Isaac Watts printed by John I. Williams. Watts is renowned for his contribution to English Hymnody by adding new poetry to original Christian verse as well as his rendition of Psalms for church services to be "imitated in the language of the New Testament." (Stephen Marini). His hymns are still in use today and have been translated into other languages. Contains tables to find Psalms and Hymns by the first line in both titles. Binding with some wear along edges and rubbed, gilt on spine fading. Occasional small chips and tears and creasing at corners of block. Some age toning and foxing throughout. 'Fourth edition'. This volume of Newbery's 'Circle of the Sciences' series, which was begun in the mid-1740s, was first published by him in 1748; the second edition followed the same year, and a third in 1770. It seems clear that this edition was copied from (and probably inspired by) the latest London edition. Newbery's own fourth edition was not published until 1778. It is dedicated to Elizabeth Montagu. 'Montagu encouraged Chapone, presumably in the summer of 1770, when the two friends were travelling in Scotland, to publish the letters on education she had been sending her niece since 1765. Chapone was grateful to Montagu for correcting the manuscript, and the text, Letters on the Improvement of the Mind (1773), was Chapone's most celebrated work' (Oxford DNB). It ran to many editions over several decades. 2 vols in one, 12mo (165 × 94 mm), pp. viii, 256 (the two volumes continuously paginated). Some light browning, mainly marginal. Unbound. Zustand: Fine. Albumen print carte-de-visite photographic portrait of William Thackeray. The carte-de-visite was reproduced from a daguerreotype by Jesse Harrison Whitehurst. Measuring 2.25" x 3.75" on slightly larger cardstock mount. Vignette image depicts Thackeray, from the chest up, facing the camera. Printed cardstock mount states beneath the image: "Wm. M. Thackeray. Entered according to an Act of Congress, in the year 1872, by Williams & Everett, in the office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington." One tiny smudge in the lower margin, else the photograph and mount are in fine condition. The photographer, Jesse Harrison Whitehurst (1819-1875), was a Virginia-born daguerreotypist who opened a chain of photo studios beginning in the 1840's, including studios in New York, Baltimore, Washington. D.C., Wilmington, North Carolina, Richmond, Norfolk, Petersburg, and Lynchburg, Virginia. He was one of the leading photographic entrepreneurs of his day [according to the online *Encyclopedia of Virginia*]. "Williams & Everett (est.1855) in Boston, Massachusetts, was an art dealership run by Henry Dudley Williams and William Everett. The firm sold original artworks by American and European artists, as well as photographs and carbon-pictures of eminent persons, noted places, and famous paintings" [per wikipedia]. Norton 32. A reprint of the first London edition with the corrections made. Gibbon, unlike many writers, did read the criticisms of his works. Copies of many of the attacks on 'The History of the Decline and Fall.' were found in his library when he died. It was an attack by one of the least worthy of his critcs that lead Gibbon to write 'A Vindication'. Davis of Oxford was only twenty-one but it was he who questioned Gibbon's honesty and reliability as an historian. Gibbon felt this was a criminal accusation. "Mr. Davies (sic) of Oxford presumed to attack, not the faith, but the good faith of the historian". 'A Vindication.' was priced at 2s 6d and sold out within a few weeks. While it failed to silence his opponents, it was very well received generally. …
