In den WarenkorbDimensions of card roughly 8.5 x 11 cm. Good, with slight creasing. Twenty lines of text. Congratulating Hammerton on his appointment as editor of the 'London Magazine'. ('Congratters on the 'London Magazine' appointment: it sounds like a nice position.') 'How do you manage it all?' Explains that it is 'difficult for me to contribute outside "Punch" as, by my agreement, they have the refusal of all likely stuff of mine.' He will 'think of you, certainly', when pieces are refused 'for some such reason as the subject having already been touched upon by "Punch".' Thanks Hammerton 'for thinking of Brer Frank. He is in Brussels now', but will look Hammerton up on his return. 'He has been very busy recently drawing Manchester for the "Manchester Guardian". He thinks Hammerton 'could get 2 good articles for the Mag' out of 'the "Author & Artist too" series': '(1) Dead 'uns (2) Living 'uns'.

He begins by explaining that he was 'not able to call before leaving Edinburgh', as he was 'much harried at last'. He asks him if he 'could do anything to bring my books into notice in Edinburgh', and especially the new edition of his 'Christ Crucified' (the book went through six editions between 1873 and 1893): 'As Xmas time is approaching you may be able to do them a kind turn.' He is 'at present more dependent on literary income, but irrespective of this I am anxious that these books should not be overlooked - perhaps you can give them a little impulse'. He concludes by stating that he is sorry to leave 'dear Edinburgh'. In a postscript he states that 'McLarens [Sermon?] is the best Scotch [Sermon?], I ever used! or heard, & more worth [sic] than ten millions of "Scotch S. 1880". How is it sold for circulation?'.
