Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Ethnology / Cultural Anthropology, grade: keine, American University of Beirut, course: Cultural Boundaries and Identities, language: English, abstract: The paper will analyze the nationalist movements and national sentiments of four entities: Quebec, Lebanon, Israel and Greece, and attempt a comparison with the conditions for a vital national identity in Lebanon. It will be suggested that the internal differences in Lebanon, dominated by a very intolerant ethnic marker, namely religion, are so predominant that they overshadow any kind of national identity that can detach Lebanese society from their sub-national attachments in order to generate national sentiments for all Lebanese people. Complicating this condition, also foreign intervention through alliances with the various groups within Lebanon comes into play. Using the Québécois, the Israeli and the Greek example, it shall be shown that a certain amount of internal unity is needed to create sentiments of belonging. Only then, art can play a significant role in enhancing national identity through symbols and material objects. Québec developed a strong legal code to protect its distinct Québécois nature against English-speaking Canada. In Greece, the Orthodox Church took the responsibility of safeguarding not only religion, but also language, folklore, dance and literature against Turkish domination and the post-Ottoman conflict over territory. Israel had and still has to struggle with the construction of a national identity that is based on the ethnic marker religion. Furthermore, the political state had to embrace various Jewish communities with different cultural habits and customs and define what kind of Jewish life is truly acceptable. Hence, cultural customs have been defined in order to create a distinct Israeli identity. For our purposes, we refer to the Arab-Israeli conflict from the Israeli perspective, being fully aware that we only spotlight one certain aspect of it . The paper is based and inspired by Richard Handler¿s analysis of the Québécois claims for a distinct national character in contrast to the rest of Canada and the independence movement, proclaimed by a considerably high percentage of the population .BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2003 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, grade: 1 (A), University of Kent (Kent Law School), language: English, abstract: International law provides for a general prohibition of the use or the threat of use of force to settle international disputes. Only very few exceptions from this rule exist and are clearly defined in the UN Charter. The question must thus be, if resolution 1441 constitutes such an exception of the rule and thus authorises the use of force against Iraq. A close examination of the resolution shall therefore be the starting point of this discussion. However, it must be said that the wording of any Security Council resolution is subject to individual interpretation. A second step must thus be to apply rules for the interpretation of Security Council resolutions if such rules exist at all.It appears that only very little authoritative guidelines to the interpretation of Security Council resolutions exist and that thus the only reliable source of guidance is previous interpretations. Those promoting direct intervention in Iraq without a further resolution refer to NATO bombings of Kosovo. Similarly to the present situation in Iraq, the Security Council did not explicitly authorise the use of force in that case either. Later, the international community claimed that because no agreement could be reached in the Security Council, military action without Security Council authorisation was necessary in order to prevent genocide. The argument being of course, that a legitimate aim could justify the use of illegal means. The question whether direct intervention in Iraq can be legitimate on the basis of resolution 1441 seems to be a much broader question, which embraces moral and ethical considerations, too. Unfortunately, a discussion of the moral and ethical legitimacy of intervention in Iraq cannot be the topic of this essay. Nevertheless, it is important even in legal considerations to keep these aspects of the debate in mind, because the Security Council itself is not a purely legal but a political institution and any of its decisions is determined by more than just legal factors. After having looked at the Kosovo case and its implications for the present situation it seems to be essential to examine the role of customary law for the Iraq conflict. This is because if an opinio juris has emerged among states to forcefully intervene for humanitarian or other reasons resolution 1441 would not be needed to authorise the use of force.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

This in turn is linked to the specific role London played in the liberalisation and deregulation of international finance which took place at an increasing pace since the 1970s. But what is the reason for this situation and what makes uranium mining so dangerous and causes one of the most dangerous decay products known to humans This paper tries to answer these questions and the effects on the Laguna Pueblo people, dealing in particular with environmental and health risks. I will also attempt to compare the alleged benefits for the Laguna Indians and the long term effects of uranium and its half-life. Furthermore, I will point out the important role of uranium in Leslie Marmon Silkös Ceremony and its power in the ceremonial process and Tayös healing. This healing process and the final understanding of the ceremony pattern are also connected to the Pueblös attempt to deal with the remains of the uranium mining age. Trying to clarify this entanglement will conclude this paper.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, Ruhr-University of Bochum, language: English, abstract: In 1967 Eric Heinz Lenneberg established his groundbreaking work 'Biological Foundations of Language' in which he tries to push the biological view on language forward. One important point that is discussed is 'language in the context of growth and maturation'. The Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH) is the essence of this considerations. Lenneberg tries to find evidence for his theory in the study of retarded, aphasic or deaf children and in neurological studies. But at this time the most striking proof for the CPH, Genie, was still imprisoned in a small room in her parents home.Three years after Lenneberg published his work on the CPH, 13¿ years-old Genie was recovered by an eligibility worker and her case rapidly aroused the interest of neurologists, psychologists and linguists.Susan Curtiss, a graduate student of the UCLA Linguistic Department got the possibility to work with Genie for the years to come. Her work Genie - A Psycholinguistic Study of a Modern-Day ¿Wild Child¿ compiles her experiences on working with Genie added by a detailed case history. What Susan Curtiss found out about Genie¿s linguistic development seems to be the evidence for the existence of a critical phase for first language acquisition. This paper gives a brief definition of Lenneberg¿s Critical Period Hypothesis, summarizes the case history and the data of Genie¿s linguistic development and, according to Susan Curtiss, relates Genie¿s case directly to the CPH. Over and above that, it tries to explain, why Genie developed a certain amount of language and with this proved the ¿strong¿ version of Lenneberg¿s hypothesis as wrong.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

It is about an orphan named Heathcliff, who wants to take revenge for being mistreated. Two of the most fascinating characters in the novel are Hareton Earnshaw, the son of Hindley and Frances, and Cathy Linton. The development of their characters and their relationship is one of the most interesting aspects of the novel. Especially the influence that Cathy gains over Hareton is remarkably shown in the course of the novel. Is Cathy¿s powerful character the trigger, which, with Hareton¿s support, finally leads to Heathcliff¿s resignation In this paper Hareton and Cathy will be introduced and their behaviour will be explained due to their upbringing. Then Heathcliff¿s influence on both characters and the development of the relationship between Cathy and Hareton will be explained.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

I have taken Norman Mailer¿s novel 'The Naked and the Dead' as an example of fiction influenced by New Journalism and my paper intents to show the relationship on the basis of this novel and other contemporary texts. The first chapter deals briefly with the author¿s motivation to write the novel and more extensively with the referential material used, referring partly to the author¿s own experience and to the existence of derived material, which has to be taken into account as well. The next chapter states the parts the novel consists of and gives a brief analysis of how structure and point of view work in the novel. The main focus of the paper is the next chapter: Norman Mailer and New Journalism. After a definition of ¿traditional¿ and ¿New Journalism¿ these terms are brought into relation with Mailer¿s novel with regard to the most eminent features: perspective, details and language. The last chapter features the narrative techniques Mailer employed and how these techniques provide the reader with closer insights into the novel¿s characters and events.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

There are conversations between men, between women and between men and women. If we consider that people we look at have a difference in gender, social class, age, race, nationality, profession and religion, it will be easy to see the differences. They are obviously visible. But I will restrict this work. I look at people of the same language, which means people within the same cultural background, more like a homogenous society or let¿s call it even tighter a community. In this case I could assume that there are no communicational problems. Even if there are some differences in education, a person who talks to another person can expect that he or she will be understood. Because of the cultural knowledge a person brings into a conversation. Therefore it will not be a problem to understand each other. To summarize such a situation I will phrase this as a society with the same language.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Essay from the year 2001 in the subject Romance Languages - French Literature, grade: 83 (entspricht 1+), University of Canterbury (School of European Culture and Languages), course: Seminar, language: English, abstract: Generally speaking, the statement is true: the reader does indeed feel sympathy towards Félicité and Flaubert¿s use of language certainly contributes to this. How is what needs to be examined. The judgement that ¿Flaubert¿s tendency towards ¿objective¿ narrative paradoxically increases the sympathy that the reader feels for Félicité¿ also poses many other questions such as what is meant by ¿objective¿ narrative How is it used in Un Coeur simple What are the author¿s reasons for using such a narrative And is so- called ¿objective¿ narrative really objective or at all possible By the way the view is worded, it seems that ¿objective¿ narrative and the reader¿s sympathy for a fictional character are incompatible and that the increase in sympathy is thus paradoxical. At the moment this may indeed sound impossible but after having had a look at the other factors that come into this equation, which are e.g. the choice of subject matter, the use of style indirect libre and the role of irony ¿ the reader¿s increased sympathy should come across as a logical result.I am aware that it is of course controversial to engage in academic argument over such impressions as ¿irony¿ or ¿tone¿, because such notions are highly subjective and a therefore a certain source of disagreement. Nevertheless, ironology does come up with some interesting approaches to Flaubert¿s style and especially his use of style indirect libre and the question whether it actually increases sympathy. I also believe that irony is employed as an important vehicle for sympathy in this story.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 16 pp. Englisch.

I chose as examples Marge Piercy¿s novel ¿He, She and It¿ and Cynthia Ozick¿s story ¿ Putermesser and Xanthippe¿ from ¿The Putermesser Papers¿.The attitude towards Judaism has changed significantly since the beginning of immigrant women¿s writing at the threshold of the 20th century when writers like Anzia Yezierska or Mary Antin began new lives in the New World. In order to enter the American society and become successful they seemed to have no choice but to completely shed their Jewish roots, get rid of their Yiddish accent (at least in writing) and also part with the Jewish way of thinking. Especially as women, they received unheard-of opportunities in the New World; they wanted to become American as quickly as possible and the new identity required getting rid of the old.Judaism was out of fashion not only in literature but in general ¿ according to Hasja Diner, in the late 1920¿s, 80 percent of young Jews living in New York had no knowledge of Hebrew letters and no religious training. Since unlike other monuments of Ancient Rome the Column survived to our days as one of the most significant symbols of Rome.Although it seems today that the column of Trajan is a single monument, it is important to consider that it wasn¿t planned to be a single standing monument in Ancient times. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2006 in the subject Interpreting / Translating , grade: 2, Liverpool John Moores University, course: Translation Studies, language: English, abstract: The basic assumption of laymen concerning translation is that every word or meaning can universally be translated from one language to another. Their idea of translation is that of a straightforward mechanical process which simply replaces source language (SL) items with target language (TL) items. Some conceptions in translation studies seem to encourage this view, and debates suggest that it is only a matter of the right scope, focus or technique to create perfect translations. The paper at hand will refute this notion. It will prove and exemplify the facts that not everything is translatable, and that a transfer of meaning necessarily involves changes entailing loss or gain of linguistic, cultural and stylistic features (cf. Harvey 2001, 38; Pym & Turk 2001, 274). Translation cannot create an identical TL copy of the SL text, but only permits a relative equivalence to it. A maximal approximation, however, can never be achieved, due to the complexity of language, its dependence on constantly changing cultural norms, and because the human factor. Especially the aspect acceptance by the audience will show that perfection is just an abstract evaluative term, which largely depends on individual taste.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1, Liverpool John Moores University, course: English in British Television, language: English, abstract: Since the invention of television its role in society has been subject of continuous and controversial debates revolving about tasks, duties and responsibilities. The classical controversies focussed on the relationship between the state as a TV provider and its citizens, trying to weigh public interests up against individual liberties. Most of the time, they were limited to a national level and included elements of class struggle (cf. Corner 2001, 261, 263 et seq.)Manifold changes in the TV landscape altered the face of programming and had effects on the role of TV. They turned the political struggle for television into a battle for market shares with an increasing international orientation. The liberalisation of television in association with the development of new broadcasting technologies led to a multitude of competing TV stations and to a diversity of available programmes. Private broadcasters¿ dependence on funding by adverts caused a commercialisation of TV and shifted the focus of programming to ratings, which have become an all-dominant factor. The constant search for new ways of attracting viewers¿ attention favours sensational topics and resulted in a variety of new programme formats (cf. Corner 2001, 266 and Wedell & Luckham 2002, 119). Globalisation has aggravated competition by flooding national markets with international products, and by supranational media conglomerates trying to peruse their interests in short-term profit-raising. Finally, adding to the tense atmosphere, the internet challenges TV¿s role as a mass medium with its global scope and its nearly unlimited supply of entertainment, information and interactivity. Therefore, a modern definition of the role of television has to comprise a re-evaluation of classic issues, a consideration of technological change and globalisation, and an international perspective. Even if TV seems to lose ground as the leading mass medium, it is still of great significance as a ¿central ingredient of everyday life¿ and as an ¿indispensable factor in the organisation of polity, society and culture¿ (Corner, 2001, 261). On the backdrop of growing commercialisation and superficiality a recollection of tasks and duties is necessary. Executives have to be reminded that broadcasting is not solely a business, but also an enterprise connected to responsibilities and to accountability. Existing excrescences have to be curtailed by a focus on quality, balance and guidance. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1.0, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar), course: Cinematic (Re-) Creation, language: English, abstract: Lord of the Flies was first published in 1954 and from then on has been read by millions of pupils, students and adults. Today the book is still popular as it deals with a subject that is timeless and fundamental : the human struggle between civilisation and the savage instinct. The book is a fable showing how the inherent evil in man¿s nature threatens order in a society. Golding uses an allegorical story to illustrate this threat to civilisation. Because of it¿s timeless topic and because it is an ideal showcase for allegorical structure and literary analysis the novel has been dealt with in numerous school lessons and university courses. This paper gives an overview of some aspects of Lord of the Flies which are important for understanding the text and interpreting the film. I will first investigate how the characters are presented in the book and comment on some narrative aspects. I will then go on to discuss the role of the book as an anti-robinsonade in the historical context of the English novel. I will also point out some philosophical aspects of Lord of the Flies. I am going to focus on aspects of the view of human nature as argued by Thomas Hobbes in his book The Leviathan and contrast it against the philosophy of Jean Jacques Rousseau.Being one of the most successful English novels Lord of the Flies has been turned into a movie twice: One version is from 1963 in black and white by Peter Brook and a later one from 1992 by Harry Hook. Due to its better visual quality it is usually the latter one that is chosen to be shown in class by teachers. Unfortunately this version neglects some of the key aspects of the novel. The second part of this paper will investigate how this film has adapted Golding¿s novel and point out some of the shortcomings of this adaptation. I will concentrate on differences between the book and the movie. I am going to demonstrate how Hook presents his characters and how he treats symbols. Furthermore I will comment on some narrative features of the film. David Bordwell suggests a definition of ¿narration¿ as ¿the organization of a set of cues for the construction of a story¿ . I will investigate how Harry Hook organises these cues and how they are conveyed to the audience.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Rostock (Amerikanistik/ Anglistik), course: Global Plots: Transnationality in Contemporary American Literature, language: English, abstract: The haunting ghost of history can be found everywhere in our existence. The past might be gone but the memory of it will stay alive in peoples minds, history books, museums, and in the developing society as well. One can recognise that a lot of people try to keep their memories of the past alive ¿ in one or the other way. Some go through family photos while listening to their grandparents telling stories about the past, others take photos and videos themselves to preserve their own memories. Also attending history class in school, watching television programs about the past or reading books with that topic are a way of learning about the personal heritage. During their work on popular history making Rosenzweig and Thelen discoursed, that a high percentage of the people, asked about their experience of handling past and heritage, visit museums or historic sites to find a path back to their ancestors or national identity. Many also collect anything related to the past, which includes everything one can imagine ¿ from photos, personal belongings of family members to antique china or souvenirs from places reminding them of past events. While recollecting their past people have different motives for their searching, some just want to find their own roots creating a family tree, others are more interested in their national identity and the history of the country they live in. A few start to write a journal or diary to remember things, which happened to them or others. Most of them are interested in finding where they come from, meaning not only their nationality but also the religious community and culture they originally come from and their family heritage. Children are shaped by their parents either in a good or bad way, people can learn from other family members, friends, society, historical events and the memories passed on to them by older generations, so that they become who they are. Memories are carried along a life time and are passed over to the following generations to keep them alive ¿ sometimes they are only very personal memories, which are passed on to the next generation. Other memories influence not only one person, but a whole generation, like war. Here collective memories about past events spread over a bigger audience of people, who try to cope with them in different ways ¿ some pass information on so that people, who were not there know what happened, while others want to forget and never mention it again, because it hurts to remember or they feel guilty, ashamed or regret to what has happened in the past. Altogether it is to say that memories in any ways are important for finding yourself and to develop your own identity.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

Are authors writing desperately against the unraveling nuclear family, against patchwork constellations and second and third marriages Is this merely nostalgic reminiscence, a longing for the long lost In my paper I will argue that the portrayal of the family in Jonathan Franzen¿s The Corrections and Cynthia Shearer¿s The Wonder Book of the Air is a rigid dissection of the pathological cycle of dysfunction, family often produces. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), language: English, abstract: The United States is known worldwide for its serious crime problem. ¿Nobody knows exactly what the actual crime rate is in America but everybody knows it is too high.¿1 In fact, total crime rates in the USA are significantly higher than in other industrialized countries. By 1998, nearly six million people ¿ almost 3% of the adult population ¿ were under some form of correctional supervision.2 These developments have had important consequences for criminal justice institutions. More than 1000 new prisons have been built in the United States since 19803. Today state prisons are forced to operate above their capacity. If you have a closer look at the criminal justice system of the United States you could get the impression that crime is the product and punishment is the answer. Especially conservative politicians, together with the mass media and activists in the victim rights movement advanced that the criminal justice system has become more and more punitive since the late 1960s. This development is documented at great length. In order to explain the increasing crime rates, most criminologists and sociologists have devoted their attention to examining the causes of crime. The scientific and public discussion about how to stop crime is going to be continued because there is no definitive recipe for a safer society. Nevertheless, it is undisputed that crime must be prevented. This paper deals with Megan¿s Law which was enacted in the United States to prevent the victimization of children. It is Americäs first law authorizing public notification when dangerous sex offenders are released into the community. Firstly, I will define the terms crime and crime prevention to come to a better understanding of this complex theme. Secondly, I will examine several attempts to define crime prevention. Thirdly, I will compare the arguments for and against Megan¿s Law in order to answer the following questions: Is this law really helpful to protect the society against sexual abuse And, if this is not the case: what could be done to prevent and even reduce sexual abuse Finally, I will make a concluding assessment and give a short summary of the themes explored in this paper.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: A, The University of Utah (-), course: Research and Bibliography, language: English, abstract: In my paper ¿Beyond Archangel¿ I take a semiotic and thematic approach to the theme of Archangel in the novel. In the novel the term ¿Archangel¿ shows up over and over again and many references are made to other themes relating to heaven and hell, such as Dante¿s Inferno.Geographically, the novel begins in a place beyond the city Archangel. It is an actual city in the Artic named after the archangel Michael. It is the Christian archangel Michael, but a whole tradition; Judaic, Greek¿ surrounds him. Therefore, in the text the word Archangel takes on multiple meanings as it refers to the physical place but also the spiritual place the three main characters are in. Victor, Walton and the Creature, all three of them are beyond Archangel, that means beyond the state of being in God¿s grace. They are closer to hell than to heaven. Victor, one of the characters has already fallen and there is no help for him. The Creature and Walton seem to be beyond all hope for salvation as well, but one of them will ultimately be saved. It is the Creature who takes on another archangel persona and through this selfless act manages to save Walton from his fast track to damnation. Through the Creature Walton manages to shake off Victor¿s spell over him, and return to the save haven of Archangel. Here again, the city takes on a meaning of being a place of God. The Creature never physically returns to Archangel, but he is redeemed through his actions. The three main characters therefore represent the three different spiritual states: Fallen, redeemed and saved by grace.I will look at religion and what the meaning of an archangel is. Mary Shelley herself was acquainted with different religions and her knowledge influenced her novel, of course. I want to be present the different religious traditions that are found in the text and explore what it means for Frankenstein.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Cultural Studies - European Studies, grade: 1 (A), University of Leeds (Cultural Studies department), course: Carnival, language: English, abstract: Carnival, as an ideal type identified by Cohen, ¿is a season of festive popular events that are characterized by revelry, playfulness, and overindulgence in eating, drinking and sex, culminating in one or two days of massive street processions by masqued individuals and groups, playing or dancing ecstatically to the accompaniment of loud and cheerful music. Also, every carnival is a place in which 'hegemonous and opposition political formations [¿], alliance and enmity, consensus and conflict are expressed like a grand joking relationship'. In the light of this it is worthwhile to examine contemporary carnivals as movements of cultural production and places of cultural policy and contestation. In this case study the author focusses on a very recent offspring of carnival culture, which has in a short period of time outnumbered the traditional carnivals in London¿s Notting Hill district and Trinidad, and has at one time been the biggest street dance event and youth meeting in the world. The Love Parade in Berlin, initially held as a birthday party for a Berlin DJ, Dr Motte (Mathias Roeingh) in 1989, has developed from an underground electronic dance music event (or better demonstration) and the voice of the (German) techno and rave scene, often referred to as ¿Generation X¿, to a mass event with 1.5 million visitors in 1999. Today, the parade, has been turned into a ¿global brand¿ with offshoot events held in Vienna, Mexico City, Leeds, Tel Aviv and plans for parades in Cape Town and Hong Kong. In the following the origins, the increasing commodification and the cultural as well as political significance of the Love Parade are being examined.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2002 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: Grade A, University of Manchester (Institute for Development Policy and Management), language: English, abstract: Two simple facts force any organisation to carefully select the people it employs. Firstly, people differ widely in their abilities, knowledge, interests and personality. Secondly, the jobs provided by the organisation vary in their demands. Thus, choosing the ¿right¿ person for a job becomes a crucial factor in ensuring an effective workforce and competitive advantages. The objective of selection processes is finding the most capable and suitable candidate, i.e., that candidate who is most likely to deliver the best performance on the job. To achieve this objective, a wide range of selection methods has been developed. But despite a variety of methods, many organisations, if not the majority of organisations, stick to the 'classic trio' of selection and rely on application forms, references and unstructured interviews only. Certainly, there is every reason to believe that there are some undeniable advantages in making the ¿classic triö attractive to many organisations. But at the same time, the ¿classic triö is criticised for a number of considerable shortcomings and a low efficiency compared to other selection methods. In the following the advantages and disadvantages of the ¿classic triö will be briefly sketched. The main criteria guiding the analysis will be reliability, validity, practicality, generality, fairness and costs of the selection methods. Afterwards some alternative selection methods will be reviewed, and their competitive advantages over the ¿classic triö will be outlined. We will analyse how job analysis data can help organisations to choose appropriate selection methods. Finally, a number of possible reasons for resistance to the implementation of alternative selection methods will be considered and an approach to overcome this resistance will be briefly sketched.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.
