The internal rihla, which prevails in the second part of the novel and which the paper will address by means of the text¿s language and content, obviously is not separate from the external journey since the story is about the development of one and the same person. It is analysed how and why he he starts disguising as someone who he is not and creates several new identities. Thirdly, the paper has a closer look on the main protagonist Tommy. This part starts out with Tommy¿s time as a terrorist showing how the death of his mother led to a similar but slightly different reaction as the one of his brother Gundappa and how he ends up being a man without an identity. Furthermore, the recurring flashbacks are analysed with special attention to his distanced relationship to this time as a soldier of the Mujahideen. It is depicted in what respect this still influences his life. Next, it is described how he regains and accepts his identity. Applying postcolonial scholar Homi K. Bhabäs theories of ¿living in-between¿ and mimicry to Tommy it is shown how he realises that he will never be regarded as a pure Englishman by society. Instead, he accepts the multitude of cultures that influence his identity and finds himself living at the border of different cultures shuttling from one to the other and using the possibilities that this shuttling between cultures offers. As a further step this theory of living at a border is transferred to his occupation as private investigator. Furthermore, the influence that his ethnicity has on his occupation is examined and whether he can sustain his aspiration of acting in the tradition of Chandler¿s crime novel figure Philip Marlowe. There is no real, direct interaction and talks between these characters, but they mean a lot to each other and bond from their common childhood onwards. A seventh character, Percival, is introduced to the reader by the monologues of the six, he never speaks for himself ,though. The whole plot is enclosed in a scene, that can be found daily all around the world: a sunrise over the ocean and the nearby beach, as well as a garden/nature scenery. Each of these interposed chapters symbolizes a stage of life the protagonists are now at and the developments they face.The main questions I will ask and set out to answer are what the theme of waves and water are supposed to symbolize and what role nature ,ubiquitous in this novel, plays and signifies for the respective characters during their childhood. These questions appear to be central for the understanding of this piece of writing, as they do not occur in any of Woolfe¿s other works I have read so far.I will also try to analyze the importance of the friends the characters have made and their feelings during the farewell dinner for Percival.Firstly, I will give a general overview about the way the novel is conceived. (.) The aim of this paper will be, firstly, to describe the main conflicts of African American history and culture. Secondly, it will point to the impacts resulting from these struggles before. In a third step, the act of passing as a means to fight these struggles will be closely examined in its origin and multiple ways of happening, in context with cultural processes within American society as well as its representation in literature, mainly the Afro American novel. The main part will be the study of two selective novels by the two authors listed in the title of this paper, James Weldon Johnson (The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man, 1912), and Nella Larsen (Passing, 1929), for several reasons. Considering the time in which their literary works gained literary reputation it can be argued that they both belong to the main advocates of the Harlem Renaissance. Therefore, choosing the right staff for expatriation, training, supervising and caring for it is of utmost importance.Because of the vast cultural differences, China is probably one of the most demanding expatriation destinations there is. As we showed in our section about culture, China differs from Germany considerably in all but one of Hofstede¿s dimension, the most significant difference being the long-term orientation and collectivism. These cultural differences are of course reflected in the way the Chinese work, manage and negotiate. In order to be successful, the German expatriate not only needs to know about these differences, he or she has to adapt to them. Also the current status of other communities with a similar focus is evaluated. The approach in this thesis features a large scaled online questionnaire, which aims to identify the current needs of the players and pinpoints the significant influence of the lead users. Mainly with regard to the position of the lead users in the gaming market (they act as guides for casual players) this influence and the consequences for a potential online gaming community are evaluated.
