While these references had been limited to metaphorical allusions during the 1960s and 70s, modern music listeners will hardly be surprised to hear mentions of drugs in popular songs that play on the radio or to see a wide variety of soft and hard drugs in music videos of almost every genre (cf. Primack 2008). Many politicians, critics and anti-drug advocates blamed this escalation on the emergence of rap music. Past analyses mostly focused on quantitative surveys of drug references in popular music, or tried to answer the question to which extent listener's musical preferences influence their relationship with drugs. Rather than gathering even more quantitative information, this paper will explore how legal and illegal drugs are depicted in rap music. It will utilize a broad definition of rap music ¿ regardless of sub-genres ¿ in order to examine drug references from early rap recorded in the 1980s up to the present day. It will argue that ¿ although based in reality ¿ popular criticism is due to misinterpretations which distort rap and hip hop culture's representation. Furthermore, they hinder our chances as a society to improve how we deal with drugs and addiction as well as to find a healthy way of approaching them. While approaches of this kind may have its merits in detecting general trends, they often miss to address differences in the quality of these references because they largely ignore the context in which they are made, thus, diminishing their explanatory value for cultural characteristics. The objective of this paper is three-fold: Firstly, it aims to reveal the broad spectrum of death depictions in Tupac's music. Secondly, it intends to create appreciation for the frequent thoughtful depiction he shows, as well as to raise sympathy even for seemingly careless expressions of death by trying to explain the subconscious rational behind it. This will be especially useful for readers not familiar with rap in its original cultural context. Thirdly, it will place these depictions in the broader context of American culture, thereby, revealing a continuity with political, social and cultural developments in American society at large, and African-American culture in particular. The argument will be made that rather than being an example of a counter-culture that is breaking with society's values, Tupac's gangsta raps can also be considered a direct product of mainstream culture. To be able to answer them at the end of this paper, I define intercultural communicative competence. A special focus is placed on Michael Byram's Model of Intercultural Communicative Competence, which will be explained in detail, then examples of how this competence can be implemented in the foreign language classroom will be presented. To round off the theoretical part, critiques that arose on Byram's model will be presented. Before starting to analyze the chosen coursebook, the methodology for this analysis will be explained. The term paper finished off with a conclusion that will answer the above-stated research question. In our rapidly growing and globalized world, more and more businesses require workers that are not only skilled in their areas but also interculturally competent. The lack of intercultural competence manifests itself in the training these businesses provide for their employees to develop it. With this necessity, intercultural competence logically moves into the focus not only of businesses but are also addressed in educational environments and are of special interest to foreign language teachers. Michael Byram already identified the necessity to include this competence in the goals in foreign language teaching in the late 90s. Up to then, the existing goals for language learners disregarded the importance of 'the social identities and cultural competence of the learner in any intercultural interaction.' (Byram, 1997: 8). He established a new model that had the goal to turn language learners into intercultural speakers. His model consists of five so-called savoirs and is, although developed 25 years ago, still one of the most important and present models concerning intercultural competence. 28 pp. Englisch.

Forecasting (expected) inflation rates is essential for the plans of private individuals and firms as well as governments¿ and central banks¿ policy decisions. In particular, this paper tests the accuracy of various univariate time series models, time series models with exogenous regressors, and Machine Learning models in a pseudo-out-of-sample experiment. An AR(1) model will serve as the benchmark to which the performance of the other models is compared. The exogenous regressors are selected by theory and by correlation with the target variable.
