Mission Artemis, as it was codenamed, was followed by a series of policies to reform the Congolese institutions, the justice system, the police and the army. This dissertation investigates whether these reforms are helping to build lasting peace in the DRC. In particular, this study focuses on the EU¿s efforts in improving civil and political rights, such as the right to free speech and a free press, as well as freedom of association; the constitution that codified these rights; the administration of democratic elections; and finally, due process in the police, judiciary and army.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 44 pp. Englisch.

During his academic years at The Paris Conservatory he failed Harmony three consecutive years, and tried five times to win Prix de Rome but luck was not with him so he did not succeed. In spite of these anguished moments in his life he did not give up and continued his work with strong commitment and determination which brought him to the spotlight later on. His era stats at the end of Romanticism, goes through the Impressionism and ends in the modern period. The French language directly and, the French culture indirectly have deep impact on his style and work. Great music has universal language. It does not matter in which language it has been performed as long as it leaves deep throbbing, thrilling and emotional impression on the audience and the listeners it is considered great. Each listener interprets the music in accordance with his or her own talent, understanding and wisdom, thus there is no single interpretation of music. The performance of the artist, his or her emotions, his or her style, language in which he or she performs and the aesthetic taste of the listeners play an important role in making opinion about great music.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

However, it is in question if these incidents really point towards a trend among terror groups to obtain and use WMD in order to achieve their political or religious aims. Nonetheless, WMD-terrorism became a political priority, particularly in the United States since the Clinton administration declared ¿(t)he acquisition of weapons of mass destruction by a terrorist group is unacceptable. There is no higher priority than preventing the acquisition of this capability or removing this capability from terrorist groups¿ (Clinton, 1995). Regardless of this political development, there is an extensive scholarly debate whether WMD-terrorism poses a new apocalyptical threat due to the ¿availability of information and expertise, heightened frustration of terrorists, demonization of target population, or messianic vision¿ (Ivanova & Sandler, 2007, p. 274) or whether the use of chemical, biological, nuclear or radiological agents (CBRN) by terrorist groups is exaggerated by the media or governmental and law enforcement agencies. However, it is necessary to recognize the differences between radiological / nuclear and chemical / biological agents since ¿these weapons differ greatly in their ease of production, in the challenges they pose for deterrence, and in the effectiveness of defensive measures against them¿ (Chyba, 2002).The purpose of this paper is not to present a comprehensive survey of the possible threat assessments or potential counter measures. Rather, it will analyze what kind of terrorist groups are more likely to use CBRN for their purposes and what motivation determines the decision either to use or to restrain from the use of CBRN agents. Furthermore, this essay will examine the actual capabilities necessary to weaponize chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear material and the difficulties for terrorists to get to this stage.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Bonn (Anglistik), course: Hauptseminar, language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionWilliam Shakespeare is the most important playwright of the English Renaissance period. His career bridged the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and James I. When the play Julius Caesar was first performed in 1599 at the Globe theatre1, Queen Elizabeth I had been on the throne for nearly 40 years. She was 66 years old at that time and she, like Caesar, did not have any children. People feared what would happen after her death. Shakespeare commented on this political situation by writing Julius Caesar. Censorship did not allow direct comments on contemporary political affairs. 2 Julius Caesar is the shortest play by William Shakespeare full of fast action and rhetoric. It takes place in ancient Rome in 44 B.C. It was a time when the empire suffered greatly from a clear division between citizens represented by the senate and the plebeian masses. The people feared that Caesar's power would lead to Roman citizens being slaves. That is why Caesar was assassinated. This paper will deal with the commoners and their treatment by the tribunes in the opening scene of the play. It will also give an insight into the speeches of Brutus and Antony and their effects on the plebeians in the second scene of the third act.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

He said: ¿`London¿ is among the most lucid and instantly available of the Songs of Experience.¿ On the one hand I agree to this statement. The poem itself is easy to understand, not much background information about the author¿s life, his visions, and his complete works is required to grasp the message. However, an analysis has to provide more than just make the message of a poem understandable. It should inter alia deal with the circumstances the author lived in, the work of which the poem is part of, and last but not least, the stylistic devices and linguistic images used in this piece of art.In the case of `London¿, this has been done by professionals many times, a fact leading us to another important point that makes the task appear easier than it actually is: The mass of biographies, comments, analyses, and criticisms that have been written about Blake and his works. The advantage is obvious: Every line of `London¿ has been discussed and commented on, and all that must be done is find adequate information. At the same time this amount of literature presents many different approaches to analyse the poem; too many to introduce them in a seminar paper. Hence, this assignment tries to show a few aspects only: After introducing the author and the `Songs of Innocence and of Experience¿ briefly, it follows a short summary of the poem and an overview of the stylistic devices. The sixth chapter is the analysis itself, focusing on the social criticism of the poem and dealing with the ¿very complex relations between reading, and hearing, and seeing¿.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

The problem, however, is often presented largely simplified and there is a tendency to perceive recreational drugs as an unequivocal social evil and overestimate the role of the state in managing the problem. For some obvious reasons, Soviet historiography largely ignored the history of drug addiction in twentieth-century Russia, but it is striking that even today there is a clear lack of attention towards historical roots of the problem in this region and various cultural forms of drug use. This condition will appear even more surprising if we consider that interdisciplinary research on the history of drug addiction will allow the exploration of the intersection of medical theory, practical policy, social context, and cultural values. In my paper I focus specifically on the early Soviet period of Russian history which witnessed the emergence of drug addiction as a social problem (ca. 1917 - 1929). I analyze early Soviet medical texts related to recreational drugs in order to show how physicians argued for the elimination of drug addiction. First, it is necessary to understand why Soviet physicians decided that it is important and indispensable to fight drug addiction. I also look on specific measures (professional medical and non-medical alike) that the doctors proposed to solve the social problem of drug addiction.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (Institut für Anglistik), course: Children's Literature, language: English, abstract: In her book The Second Sex (Beauvoir 1953: 362) the world-famous French philosopher and feminist Simone de Beauvoir writes that¿[t]he adolescent girl will devote a special love to Nature: still more than the adolescent boy, she worships it. Unconquered, inhuman Nature subsumes most clearly the totality of what exists. The adolescent girl has not yet acquired for her use any portion of the universal: hence it is her kingdom as a whole; when she takes possession of it, she also proudly takes possession of herself.¿The idea of nature as a safe haven and retreat where a young girl refuges to and repeatedly finds solace and empowerment also penetrates children¿s literature. What Annis Pratt calls The Green-World Archetype (Pratt 1981: 16-24), ¿an adolescent girl who lives close to nature, is one of the most common female protagonists in children¿s fiction¿. (Nikolajewa 2002: 332)Nature features prominently in the novels of the 20th century Canadian authoress Lucy Maud Montgomery best known for her classic girl¿s book Anne of Green Gables. In all of her books Montgomery¿s protagonists are female heroes. The heroines of her novels and short stories vary from each other in age. Out of her twenty-one books eleven focus on female protagonists in late childhood or early adolescence of about nine to approximately eleven years of age. (Epperly 1992: 7)A prominent theme that runs through all of those novels is the development of self-confidence of the, at the outset of the story, powerless young heroine. Throughout the storylines each one of the young girls ¿learns to value herself in relation to the surrounding community and culture¿ (Epperly 1992: 7) - and nature, more precisely the fictionally adapted landscape of L.M. Montgomery¿s beloved Prince Edward Island, seems to play a vital part in that process. In her monograph The Fragrance of Sweetgrass Epperly states that in the first book of the Anne of Green Gables series ¿three quarters of the novel¿s nature descriptions are offered as though through Anne¿s eyes¿. (Epperly 1992: 18) What is true for Anne of Green Gables can also be observed in Montgomery¿s other children¿s fictions. Throughout her books the Canadian authoress enables the reader to perceive nature through the eyes of her adolescent or child heroines; thus enabling us to detect what kind of effects the natural surroundings might have on the female protagonist¿s psyche and psychological development while she is growing up.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Neihardt. Largely considered to be an autobiographical narration, it has become one of the most famous books dealing with the story of individuals of Native American origin. Following the tradition of so-called ¿as-told-tö stories (Georgi-Findlay 1997, 385), it is the story of the Lakota holy man Black Elk, who told it to the author John G. Neihardt who transcribed it and wrote it down. The story, and its categorization as autobiographical, claims authenticity, and was widely regarded to be an accurate report of Native American life among the tribe of the Oglala Lakota and their culture. Even today, the book is still considered to be one of the first works of Native American literature. (As a matter of fact, the book is listed in the chapter ¿Indianerliteratur¿ (Native American Literature) in Hubert Zapf¿s ¿Amerikanische Literaturgeschichte¿.) Even though it was written down and published by a person of Euro-American background, the story itself is considered to be uniquely Native American in content. But how authentic is the story, how much of what Neihardt wrote down was fact, and what was actually his own interpretation or even literary freedom that he took to serve certain stereotypes and make the story more appealing for the audience which it was aimed at BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - History of Literature, Eras, grade: 1,7, RWTH Aachen University, language: English, abstract: Modernist writers like Ezra Pound or James Joyce often wrote in fragmented style, used allusions instead of metaphors and broke with traditional verse and turned away from classical poetry. In many cases they did not use classical metaphors but rather wrote in allusions, which refer to something in a more indirect way than traditional images do. With their literature and style they tried to criticize modern society. Among these authors, T.S. Eliot is one of the most important modernist writers. ¿The Waste Land has come to be regarded as one of the chief exemplars of modernism in English literature.¿ (Reeves 1994: 3) According to this Eliot¿s poem can be seen as a typical example of modern poetry. In his long poem The Waste Land the author refers to a number of mythological images and stories. These are presented in fragments but make sense and seem to be well structured when one analyzes them deeper after several close readings and analyses. One of the most important personages in his poem is the blind seer Tireseas. In his Notes to The Waste Land, T.S. Eliot points out that ¿[w]hat Tireseas sees, in fact, is the substance of the poem¿ (1971: p. 148). This substance of the poem, which was first published in 1922, is to be analyzed in this term paper. Tireseas, a blind seer, who appears in ancient Greek literature in the Theban Plays by Sophocles and in Roman literature in the Metamorphosis by Ovid, is used as a reflex of the author¿s voice foreseeing human failures without being able to change them. In Greek mythology, especially in Sophocles¿ Antigone, he appears as a reminder of traditions.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

In the first part of this paper, I will begin with introducing the phenomenon. Here, I will give a short overview of how reflexive pronouns developed. Furthermore, I will present two different acknowledged theories (Chomsky and Reinhart & Reuland) and their conditions on reflexive pronouns. I will then show the two different usages of this phenomenon and will give examples of cases which are somewhat different from the common way of using it. In the second part, I will present the explanations and rules as they are given in the three most commonly used schoolbooks here in Hesse to show how reflexive pronouns are implemented. In part three, I will investigate in how far these rules are sufficient to explain the examples given in those schoolbooks respectively. I will furthermore analyze examples given in Mary Shelley¿s ¿Frankenstein¿ and Oscar Wilde¿s ¿The Canterville Ghost¿, which are suggested for the use in seventh grade. Here, I will rather put my focus on somewhat more complex examples in order to find out whether those short rules apply for them as well. I will then conclude, whether my assumption that the explanations in these schoolbooks are not sufficient can be verified.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Essay from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,7, Free University of Berlin (Institut für Englische Philologie), course: History and Variation of English II, language: English, abstract: The question about the grammaticalization process of the modal auxiliary verbs from Old English to Modern English is a highly discussed topic among linguistics and scholars today. It is undisputed that, in the English that is spoken today, words like 'should', 'could' etc. form a separate category, or rather a subcategory, 'modal' that does not only syntactically differ from the usual English verbs, but also morphologically. That is, of course with the exception of a few regional variations such as for example Scots, but since the main focus of this paper is on the standard British and American English dialects, those regional non-standard dialects will not be taken into consideration here. For every native and average non-native speaker, it is natural that modals like 'will' for example don't take the obligatory inflectional ending -s in third person singular present. Or that 'should', 'would' or 'could' do not have past tense meaning, although the forms itself are actually a past form. And it is also natural that just those verbs, which we subcategorize as modals, will neither appear as infinitives with 'to' (\*'I have to will'), nor do they require 'to' in combination with regular verbs (\*'I should to go'). Today we instinctively know that those usual grammatical rules that regular verbs require to be followed in order to correctly be embedded in a sentence, don't apply to the modals. How did we get to this point, though In the following paper I want to take a closer look at how the modals developed from regularly inflectional verbs, that they still were in Old English, to this new category 'modal' which is no longer a full verb that can stand alone in a sentence, but more of a grammatical function that signals either epistemic or deontic meaning.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Kennedy-Institut für Nordamerikastudien), course: Language Change II: Language Contact Phenomena and Change in English, language: English, abstract: The number of indigenous people that inhabited the American continent before the European settlers arrived is still debated about today. Based on numerous different sources, printed as well as online, it ranges from 8 million to 112 million people who lived in tribal societies. Those tribes were often very different in the way they lived: some societies were nomad tribes, their major source of food being hunting ¿ which was why they followed their prey. Others lived from growing maize and plants. Again others in the rocky desert regions lived in houses which they built using the natural rock foundations of the area. There were different sizes of tribes, some being rather small, and some being huge, like for example the Aztec societies or the Anasazi people. But no matter what size the population of tribe was, or how advanced they were in their way of life, there¿s one thing all of them had in common: the moment of contact with the European settlers changed their lives forever.Today the number of Native American people in the United States, although slowly increasing again, is still considerably low: about 1.9 million people today consider themselves to be Native Americans. They make about one percent of the overall population of the United States of America. Throughout the last five centuries, their population was decimated by diseases and wars, caused by the invasions of European settlers. Special programs during the nineteenth century, aiming to ¿kill the Indian, save the man¿ have further added to not only the decimation of a race, but the loss of cultures and related to that, languages.Yet, a lot of aspects of Native American cultures and languages live on today in the modern languages in the form of loanwords. These loanwords allow a glimpse into a unique style of life, which got lost over time. This paper aims on looking at the different kinds of loanwords, seeing what areas of life they can be classified into and to examine when they entered the English language for the first time.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, University of Constance, course: (Re-)Writing Gender in Contemporary Native North American Literature, language: English, abstract: In reading Thomas King¿s novel Green Grass, Running Water we inevitably come across many references to biblical names and stories. Intertextuality is a major technique in the novel and especially the mythical stories are explicitly interwoven with hints to the Bible. The author deals with canonical texts as well as with Indian myths and, as we¿re going to see later, also with historical events etc. He takes up names and parts of the pre-text and re-writes them. ¿It is essential to note, however, that these pre-texts are not opposed to each other as part of a binary structure. Rather they interact with one another and form something new each time they are told¿1.Besides the many direct and indirect references, there are also several correspondences between the structure of Green Grass, Running Water and the Bible, e.g. the four stories told by the four old Indians can be seen as a parallel to the four gospels in the New Testament2. In the following I am going to focus on explicit references in the four mythical stories that develop in the conversation of the trickster Coyote and a first person narrator. The main part of this analysis is the comparison between the biblical pre-texts and King¿s re-writing. As the actual parallels are very few there has to be some other idea behind these intertextual devices. It is probably more about history and hierarchy than about the pure pre-text.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

It is, amongst other things, affected by jealousy and resentment in terms of salary, responsibility or knowledge and is based on the so-called 'psychological contract' which 'deals with implicit reciprocal promises and obligations' (Cullinane et al.: 2006, p. 115). As soon as people sign a labour contract, they also 'sign' a psychological, an unwritten contract which mainly contains assumptions and beliefs of the two parties (employer and employee) (Rousseau: 1995). 'This mental model provides a stable understanding of what to expect in the future and guides efficient action without much need for practice.' (Rousseau: 2004, p. 121)Additional to the differing assumptions and beliefs, goals, commitment, satisfaction and objectives of the two parties vary incredibly. But what are the main reasons that make this relationship so unstable This work deals with the evaluation of the cause of the inconsistent relation between managers and workers; and concludes with a short review. 12 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Customer Relationship Management, CRM, grade: A, University of St Andrews, language: English, abstract: An increased competitive situation on the basis of similar products, scarce resources, advancements in technology and changes in customer behaviour are forcing companies to consider a sustained and efficient structure of the provision of their services over and above a strong customer orientation. Customer relationship management (CRM), as a part of strategic marketing, can be seen as the emerging management paradigm, with which companies seek to respond to these changing market conditions. Through the adoption of a CRM system, companies are able to collect and evaluate specific knowledge about their customers in a systematic way, hence primarily improving customer service and customer loyalty. Until recently, companies ignored the importance of this, which lead to a loss of customers and thus a decrease in profitability. Beyond that, the fact that companies neglect their customers is oftentimes intensified by a lack of appropriate equipment, tools or project management methods. Estimates by some market observers even state that nearly 70 - 80% of all CRM projects fail or do not attain the intended target. Nevertheless, CRM can be an effective and profitable cross-functional management tool for attaining a lasting exchange with customers across all their points of contact and access with a personalised treatment of the most beneficial customers in order to ascertain customer retention and the effectiveness of marketing initiatives. The adoption of an effective customer relationship management within the field of business-to-business (B2B) marketing is therefore essential, as companies have to be exceedingly responsive to individual customer preferences, equally requiring a differentiated sales approach in order to raise customer profitability. The objective of this paper is to provide a clear overview of the importance of customer relationship management. The coursework is divided into five chapters. Initially, the general theoretic foundations of customer relationship management are explained in chapter two. Thereafter, the specific advantages of adopting a CRM approach for business organisations will be outlined in chapter three. Chapter four describes a framework of CRM explaining the ideas and techniques within a business marketing context. Finally, in a retrospective analysis of the paper, the research findings will be analysed and an outlook of the future development of CRM in business marketing will be given.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

As a questionnaire is one of the most famous methods to gain primary data the author uses the approach to make the examination from general to detail: Within the first superficial description, the simplicity and timelessness of the regarded object of investigation ¿fruit juice drink¿ is proven and some general questionnaire criteria with their corresponding characteristic values like standardized interview strategy, written method of data collection, university students as target group and missing indication on pre-codification are presented. The first 21 questions are clearly focused on content specification, likings of the target group and identification of prevailing interrelations between product preferences as well as buying and consuming behaviour. In contrast to the last question No. 22 which aims at collecting general personal (socio demographic) data of the respondents. The author then splits the core part of the real analysis in four sub chapters, describes and evaluates layout and structure of the questionnaire: five content parts with partly inconsistent alignment of tick boxes and response options. A detailed analysis of nearly all the questions follows then, question No. 8 for e.g. is very laborious created - the respondent has to evaluate six counter parts of attributes in order to classify her or his favourite non-alcoholic drink. Furthermore dichotomous questions are found but sadly no multiple-choice ones. Whereas in the area of scaling, the questionnaire really convinces as it has a mixture of 5% nominal, 75% ordinal and 10% ratio scaling amount of questions, leaving only 10% of unstructured, open-ended questions with no scaling.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

In academic literature there is consensus about the fact that cultural issues had a major impact on the merger¿s failure. Bearing in mind the importance of organisational culture on the success of M&A, this study aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the famous DaimlerChrysler merger. The researcher will reveal the organisations¿ cultural issues which arose during and after the merger and she will explain the impact of these issues on different organisational levels. The analysis will be conducted with the help of the theoretical frameworks of Schein (1984) and Hofstede (2001).Findings show that cultural differences have had an impact throughout all organisational levels. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: A, Northumbria University, language: English, abstract: The history of Pixar (Pixar Animation Studios, 2009a) goes back to 1984 when John Lasseter, today¿s chief creative officer of both Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, started working for the computer graphics division of Lucasfilm which two years later was bought by Steve Jobs and renamed ¿Pixar¿. In 1991, after a number of short films and commercials with some of them winning various awards, Pixar and Disney pooled forces aiming to make the first full-length com-puter-animated movie. Released in 1995, Toy Story was a great success and marks the beginning of Pixar¿s unbroken triumph to date. Having once prolonged their agreement to work together in 1997, and having released Toy Story 2, A Bug¿s Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo and The Incredi-bles, all major successes, Pixar eventually was acquired by Disney in 2006. How-ever, instead of absorbing Pixar, people in charge at Disney explicitly agreed to let Pixar continue as it did before and even secured the preservation of the ¿Pixar Culture¿ in their contract (Telegraph Media Group Limited, 2009). In fact, Disney used the merger to revive its own spirits, for example by promoting John Lasse-ter to his above-mentioned position.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

I tried to find out through texts and on the Internet what it meant, and I soon found out that there were many different definitions. I lost myself in blogs of people who defined themselves as butch, and the conclusion was that the definition has to do both with femininity and masculinity. After reading Leslie Feinberg's novel Stone Butch Blues (1993), the meaning of the term was at least a little more clear.I decided to write the paper on this concept, mainly driven by curiosity. It was like looking into a room full of books and feeling the desire to read them all, with the conviction that every book had to tell a different story. I decided to call the paper ¿The Search for Identity in Leslie Feinberg's Stone Butch Blues¿ because I think that Jess's search goes beyond her self-definition as a butch. The story narrates the search for identity of an individual who has to choose between given categories. At the end, Jess chooses to refuse a stable definition, because no one fits properly. I chose to follow the main character through the search, annotating every stage and trying to find confirmation in the critique.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2.0, University of Kassel, course: Anglo-American Literature, language: English, abstract: Oscar Wilde¿s only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, can be considered a revolutionary piece of literature not only because it broke out of the traditional value and belief pattern of the Victorian society but also because it replaced the traditional pattern with new concepts coined by Wilde and his former tutors.Several themes such as homoeroticism, an aesthetic lifestyle orinfluence and corruption, were issues that many had been afraid to address in the time before Wilde. In this research paper, I will place my main focus on the matter ofaestheticism, the causes that it has and the consequences that result from an aesthetic lifestyle. In order to analyze these aspects, it is inevitable to have a closer look at Oscar Wilde¿s beliefs about art and morality which serve as a basis for understanding the main character¿s behavior in the novel. To begin my paper, I will outline Wilde¿s thoughts on art andaestheticism as presented in his famous selection, Intentions, which consists of a number of essays and dialogues on aesthetics as well as his preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray that has been regarded as Wilde¿s personal praise of aestheticism. This background information is essential to understanding the main character¿s motivations in the story, which can often be related to Wilde¿slife as an artist.I will then make a detailed analysis of the characters Basil Hallward, Lord Henry Wotton, Sibyl Vane and Dorian Gray and will explain how their aesthetic behavior and their moral beliefs can be linked to Wilde¿s thoughts. To end, I will attempt to summarize my findings referring to thestatement that Wilde also included criticism of aestheticism in his novel. The term ¿aestheticism¿ derives from Greek, meaning ¿perceiving through senses¿ and is a nineteenth-century European concept that rejects the moral rules and conventions of Victorian society, and focuses instead on beauty and the resulting pleasure in life.Since it is hard to nail down ¿aestheticism¿ to one definition and since it has different meanings to different people, I will take a closer look at Oscar Wilde's thoughts about this concept, in order to better understand the correlation between this idea, and The Picture of Dorian Gray. When it was first published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine on 20June 1890, The Picture of Dorian Gray was attacked fiercely as it suggested a new set of moral beliefs.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, University of Heidelberg (Anglistisches Seminar), course: Shakespeare¿s Tragedies ¿ Hamlet, Macbeth and King Lear, language: English, abstract: Renaissance tragedy does to a large extent deal with common political, religious and social questions of the time. In most cases, authors use tragedy as the place to question and even criticize those issues, and thus use it as a political space. In Jacobean England, society was profoundly hierarchical with the king on top of the state, and the father or husband as head of the family. ¿[W]omen were clearly socially subordinate, and the preponderance of discourse on the gender hierarchy was misogynistic¿ . Macbeth is one of Shakespeare¿s late tragedies, written in 1606, and presented at the Globe Theatre later that year. In Shakespeare¿s plays sex and gender are crucial for defining human identity and political power. In the course of this essay, I will first take a closer look at gender ideology in the English Renaissance and in Renaissance tragedy and see how society justified the social subordination of women, and what kind of behaviour was considered appropriate for women. As Macbeth is a play that hugely builds on gender stereotyping, I will afterwards work out the play¿s definition of masculinity and femininity in the medieval social context the tragedy is set in, and subsequently analyse the characters of the three witches and king Duncan regarding their hermaphroditism and androgynity, and see whether the blurring of fixed gender roles might be interpreted as an indication that gender politics in Macbeth are unusual for the medieval Scottish context. The main part of this essay will be dedicated to the Macbeths, two strongly individualized characters. I will examine the characters of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth first, take a look at how their ambition leads to their downfall and afterwards discuss whether it is possible to talk about an inversion of the traditional gender roles since especially Lady Macbeth oversteps the boundaries of appropriate female behaviour and is, at least in the beginning, the more powerful character of the two spouses.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 32 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: Good, European University at St. Petersburg, course: Security and Disarmament in Europe, language: English, abstract: The world has not become safer in the 21st century. But there is only limited number of really global threats. Those include, inter alia, international terrorism, climate change, and the issue of nuclear proliferation. In its Resolution on the Convention on the Prohibition of Use of Nuclear Weapons, the UN General Assembly underlined that ¿the use of nuclear weapons poses the most serious threat to the survival of mankind¿ . But despite a nearly universal recognition of the threat posed by the mere existence of the nuclear arsenals, the issue of further nuclear proliferation among the members of the international community is yet to be solved. In this paper, we attempt to conduct a comparative analysis of possible approaches to the issue of nuclear proliferation. The goal of the research, however, is not the elaboration of practical solution of the issue. We will focus on the conceptual value of the one or another option, instead. The aim is to define main dimensions of the problem that can be faced by the international community: be it in the universal fora (e.g., the UN General Assembly) or in the ¿exclusive clubs¿ (the UN Security Council).First part will be dedicated to the theoretical approaches that may be employed in the research. Also, the framework for the comparative analysis per se will be defined. In the second part of the paper, we will focus on the determination of factors that should be taken into account during the comparative evaluation of the solutions. In the third part, the set of factors will be applied to the potential solutions; and we will try to define common and specific characteristics of every option. There are a lot of competent research papers dedicated to the problem of nuclear proliferation. Many of them were published before the end of the Cold War and, therefore, provide us with the dynamic view on the issue. Most of the literature used in the paper is dedicated to the problem of the theoretical and legal dimensions of the nuclear proliferation. A number of international documents were used as well: the Nonproliferation Treaty, the UN General Assembly Resolutions, etc. Mass-media sources proved to be a rich source of information. Additional information was derived from the statistical data publications, caselaw of the International Court.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 32 pp. Englisch.
