Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - History of Literature, Eras, grade: 1,0, University of Education Heidelberg, course: Gender and Literature, language: English, abstract: 1. INTRODUCTION¿Like the minority writer, the female writer exists within an inescapable condition of identity which distances her from the mainstream of the culture and forces her either to stress her separation from the masculine literary tradition or to pursue her resemblance to it¿.Lynn Sukenick (In: Miller 1985, 356)Could madness have been a means of ¿liberation¿ for 19th century female writers Goodman et al (1996, 110) raise this legitimate question while leaving open the question of whether or not the writer herself is considered mad or if she is writing about madness. No matter which approach one chooses, the question remains why women of this century should apply such drastic methods at all. Why would madness be considered a means of liberation for female writers In this paper I will explore the reasons why 19th century women may more likely have become mad than men in the same time period. I will discuss the issue of mad female writers as well as the appearance of madness in their texts, and finally focus on strategies that female writers applied in order to be heard (or read) in a male dominated literary environment.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, University of California, San Diego (Department of Political Science), course: Urban Politics, language: English, abstract: A long and unsettled history, an international reputation for its cultural scenes, a debt of more than 61 billion euros, 3.4 million inhabitants and 400,000 trees ¿ this is Berlin, the capital, biggest city, and political center of Germany. It is famous for its museums and theaters, its art galleries and restaurants, its diverse districts, nightclubs, and universities (Becker 48). These seem to be the perfect conditions for Richard Floridäs Creative Class, a group of young professionals who are searching for a job and a life. In the following essay, I will show how this concept of the Creative Class helps to analyze Berlin¿s strengths and weaknesses to attract creative people. Furthermore, I will also point out where this concept lacks practical applicability. After introducing Floridäs concept, several aspects will be discussed: the history and culture of Berlin, its environment and skyline, the life in the twelve districts, the role of educational institutions, the metropolitan region of Berlin/Brandenburg, state politics, and alternative scenes in the city.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Essay from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,0, University of Reading (Department of History), language: English, abstract: In 1966, Martin Luther King, Jr. still held the opinion that violent resistance to white supremacy would be futile. But at this time a certain group of people, especially young blacks in the northern cities, turned towards a strategy of armed resistance which was spread by radical black nationalists like Malcolm X. Beginning shortly after the Second World War, when the hopes of most African Americans for racial equality were not fulfilled, and on its peak at the end of the 1950s, an increasing number of blacks protested peacefully against discrimination. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and leading figures like MLK helped to organize several demonstrations, sit-ins (Greensboro lunch counter sit-in, 1960) and boycotts (Montgomery Bus Boycott, 1955), aiming at full integration of black Americans. At the same time, but evidently opposing these nonviolent forms of protest, the Nation of Islam (NoI), amongst them Malcolm X, demanded a new kind of Black Nationalism which emphasized black pride, unity and self-respect. Nevertheless, these pragmatic radicals aimed at separatism, but the vehicle to achieve it was supposed to be a revolution. These two antagonistic approaches determined the Civil Rights Movement from the mid 1950s onward. 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Bayreuth, course: The Development of Ugandan Literature since Independance, language: English, abstract: Refering to Ugandäs long history, theatre also has a long past. The country has experienced a various number of influences by the missionaries, colonialists, Milton Obote¿s destruction of the Buganda Kingdom and reign of terror and Idi Amin¿s economic war strategy. It is difficult to define truly African theatre.Theatre always stood under observation from outside. In this way how could it be possible do develop an own Ugandan theatre form Even before those influences Uganda already hat its own cultural tradition and when alien powers came to the country, life and art still developed but under certain circumstances. In this essay I would like to try to explain the difficulties of defining African especially Ugandan theatre. After that I would like to elaborate on how all those influences contribute to an own theatre form in Uganda if that¿s really the case.On my way to explain Ugandäs theatre tradition I will talk about the whole development up to date, starting with the missionaries that came to the country to ¿civilize¿ the people, also through drama. In the 1920¿s people discovered that drama is also a possibility to do for living. By that time the first travelling theatres came up.In the 1940¿s cultural programmes by the Social Welfare used drama to improve peoples¿ economic status. The 1960¿s under Obote¿s regime were the birth of political theatre like the Community Theatre and the Makerere Travelling theatre which was founded by students of the Makerere University, Kampala.Amin¿s politics let no freedom for cultural development in the theatre arts. Writing under censorship needed new forms by dramatists. Therefore I will show up some representative dramatists for Ugandan literature. Selected examples will be Wycliffe Kiyingi, Byron Kawadwa and Robert Serumaga. With the escape of many artists into exile, a new era of entertainment and commercialisation of the arts developed. In the 1980¿s the new Theatre for Development came up and I will present the example of Rose Mbowäs Mother Uganda and her children. With the end of twenty years of civil war, theatre became more free but had to deal with new challenges. Commercialisation, privatisation and mediation make it difficult to produce new qualitative plays. In my conclusion I will present that there is a truly African/ Ugandan theatre dealing with the fact, that in every country, life and art are influenced by actions, experiences, opinions which are part of the cycle of life.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. The essay deals with the question of whether the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Germany may still be considered that of a so-called 'civilian power'. Following a brief introduction, the history of the Federal Republic and the characteristics of the 'civilian power' concept are discussed. Subsequently, the decisive events that led to the erosion of the 'civilian power' concept, especially the German engagement in Kosovo (1999) and Afghanistan, as well as the 'no' to the war in Iraq make up the second part.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,3, University of Kassel, course: Introduction to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Teaching Methodology, language: English, abstract: Since we are studying to become future teachers of English, it is really important to teach the ¿so-called ¿four skills`- listening, speaking, reading and writing¿ (Brumfit, 1984, p.103). This term paper will only deal with two of the four skills, which are listening and speaking. Both of these skills need to be learned and require active behaviour. This term paper starts off by introducing the reader to the topic of teaching listening, continues by explaining the characteristics of listening situations, learner problems with listening and different listening activities which can be used at school. Furthermore, it gives a definition of speaking, how to teach speaking at school, some important speaking methods and learner problems. The next topic is the oral presentation itself and what we did in class, which tasks we gave to the other students, which aims we wanted to achieve and how everything worked out. In the final conclusion we want to show what we learned while we prepared our presentation and actually presented it in class. Some problems that occurred in class and how we could have improved the organisation of the presentation and the get involved part will be mentioned as well.We finish our paper with the attachment and the bibliography.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, University of Kassel (Literature: Language and Cultural Awareness), course: Department of English & Romance Languages, language: English, abstract: This term paper will take several questions into account by starting off with a general definition of the terms ¿Literature, Language and Cultural Awareness¿ as they are the basis for talking about literature and literary texts. Afterwards, a precise definition of the terms will follow before the consequences for the EFL classroom will be mentioned which lead to a text example that shows how one can teach the aspects that have been mentioned before and why it is important to teach students literature at all. The text shows that students need to understand other cultural backgrounds in order to understand the whole text since we do not have the expression ¿hills like white elephants¿ in Germany. As a result, this text is a good example for showing how important language and cultural awareness are in order to understand literary texts in the EFL classroom. When we talk about literature in the EFL classroom, we should first of all ask ourselves what we need to take into consideration in general when we want to deal with literary texts in the EFL classroom. Some questions arise like why one should teach literature in the EFL classroom and what kind of literature needs to be taught. It is important to read literary texts in the EFL classroom because the curriculum says that teachers should deal with different countries and cultures by presenting people in real life situations. Therefore, they should mostly use authentic material in order to build a connection to the student¿s world. The teacher should be careful in choosing texts for the EFL classroom because the texts need to be suitable for the class in order to let the students work with them.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 36 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: 1, University of Marburg (Faculty of Social Science and Philosophy), course: Transitional Justice - Research Seminar, language: English, abstract: This research paper exemplifies the contribution of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) to the establishment of a hybrid tribunal model as an instrument for prosecuting serious criminal offenses committed systematically during conflicts. The research sphere is demarcated by the world¿s 3rd hybrid tribunal novelty, and its participation in the advancement of a hybrid tribunal model, as internationalized judicial instrument of correction of those atrocities against humanity that where committed methodically with political purposes in times of authoritarian regimes or armed conflicts of different origin. The interest arises from the awareness that by entering into force of the International Criminal Court in The Hague/ICC in 2002, a shift of significance has taken place from the international level back to the domestic one, in dealing with serious crimes. In the context of radical changes, the ECCC comes to strengthen the hybrid tribunal instrument as a judicial organization form with multidimensional benefits, and to offer it sustainability to the advantage of other post-conflict societies.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 44 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: 1, Utrecht University (Media Studies), course: Remakes & Parody, language: English, abstract: Thom Patterson from CNN expresses the issue of the remake in a very nice way: ¿Remaking well-known films can be the Hollywood equivalent of replacing the family dog or a favourite bathrobe: sometimes only the old one will do and a replacement is unthinkable.¿In my case study I will take a closer look at the two different versions of¿Solaris¿:Andrei Tarkovsky¿s ¿Solaris¿ (1972) andSteven Soderbergh¿s ¿Solaris¿ (2002)Is Soderbergh¿s ¿Solaris¿ a worthy representative, replacement or addition to Tarkovsky¿s ¿Solaris¿ or is it just like Patterson describes it, unneeded like the replacement of the family dog Is Tarkovsky¿s ¿family dog¿ so well-known and respected that a new ¿family dog¿ would be redundant First of all, one should notice that both films are based on Stanislaw Lem¿s book ¿Solaris¿. At least that¿s what one can read everywhere¿but is this so Is Soderbergh¿s film a re-adaptation of Lem¿s book or is it rather a remake of Tarkovsky¿s film I would like to analyse in what way the two directors developed the characters in the film having the book ¿Solaris¿ as the basis.By analysing the way, Soderbergh and Tarkovsky present the relationship between Hari/Rheya and Chris and how the two directors develop the characters, I will also try to find an answer to the question whether Soderbergh¿s ¿Solaris¿ is a remake of Tarkovsky¿s Solaris or a re-adaptation of Lem¿s book. What are the similarities and differences of the presentation of this relationship in the two films Soderbergh for example never personally said that his film is only a remake of Tarkovsky¿s ¿Solaris¿ but also, or even more, a re-adaptation of Lem¿s book. This would exactly apply to the theory of Jan Speckenbach, who mentions in his first part of ¿On the Remake. A cinematic phenomenon¿ that sometimes the director of a remake denies it to be one. Since it might sell better when it is a new adaptation of the novel - that also is used in the original film - that provided a basis for the remake and not just a remake of the original film. But did Soderbergh only refer to his film as a re-adaptation because it might sell better or is it really a re-adaptation Hari/Rheya (named Hari in Tarkovsky¿s ¿Solaris¿, differently in Soderbergh¿s ¿Solaris¿ and same as in Lem¿s book: Rheya) also plays a central role in the two films, and I would like to analyse the representation of her in the two films.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Freiburg, course: HS American Classics of the 19th Century, language: English, abstract: When he was engaged to marry Sophia Amelia Peabody, a painter who copied the works of famed contemporaries with ¿widespread praise¿, Nathaniel Hawthorne was awaiting two pictures she had produced ¿expressly for him.¿ (both GOLLIN 2001: 114)1 In a letter he assured her:I never owned a picture in my life; yet pictures have always been among the earthly possessions (and they are spiritual possessions too) which I most coveted. (¿) I have often felt as if I could be a painter, only I am sure I could never handle a brush;¿ now my Dove will show me the images of my inward eye, beautiful and etherealized by her own spirit. (GOLLIN 2001: 115)This essay will first try to outline whether these lines are just flattery or in how far the visual arts really played an important role in Hawthorne¿s life, and since Hawthorne was of course quite able himself to lay out before the world the images of his inward eye with great success, it will then try to show what visual techniques Hawthorne incorporated in his work, particularly in his classic The Scarlet Letter. It will be seen that, rather than creating a colorful tableau, as Hawthorne was also capable of doing in other tales (GOLLIN 1991: 53)2, he creates an atmosphere in The Scarlet Letter in which ¿the color pattern (¿) is essentially a contrast of red against black¿ (MATTHIESSEN 1945: 265)3, while the truly dominant technique Hawthorne puts to use is chiaroscuro, the application of light and shade.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,7, University of Trier (Fachbereich II Anglistik), course: The Tempest and Its Followers, language: English, abstract: The figure of the wizard can be considered as one of the most interesting characters in modern fantasy literature. Normally, wizards are seen as old, wise men, with long beards, robes and staffs who have great knowledge about the world and its history due to long studies and books. However, there are a few ancestors of the wizard as he is seen today: in Arthurian legends you can find Merlin and in Shakespeare¿s plays Prospero is the great wizard. In creating Prospero Shakespeare conjured an image of the wizard, traces of which can still be found in modern literary figures. As Prospero can be seen as ¿providing one of the basic templates for the figure of the wizard¿ it is interesting to the similarities between wizards like him and wizards in modern fiction. In the novel The Lord of the Rings J.R.R. Tolkien describes two wizards who settled the image of the modern wizard in the reader¿s mind: Gandalf and Saruman. As ¿Gandalf became a cult figure in the late 1960s¿ his opponent Saruman cannot reach his popularity. However, the two wizards show the two sides of magic between which a wizard can choose: good versus evil. In the novel the wizard plays ¿a crucial, super-heroic role¿ and thus the wizard is manifested as a basic of fantasy literature.Taking into account that Prosperös character has good and bad attitudes in Shakespeare¿s The Tempest it is interesting to examine the relationship between him and his descendants Gandalf and Saruman as the embodiments of good and evil. Three main aspects will be analysed: the sources of the three wizards¿ magic, where their power is situated; how to evaluate the use of magic, whether it is good or bad; and in which way the magic is manifested in the outer world. Some abstractions should be considered in analysing Prospero, Gandalf and Saruman: Gandalf and Saruman are known by many names; however, I use Gandalf and Saruman as the most famous and most used names, too. Moreover, the three wizards represent one prototype of wizard: the one who is educated and who uses magical powers. However, in today¿s fiction there still exist other kinds of wizards who draw their power from other sources, for example, the Wizard of Oz who ¿is a charlatan who has arrived in the magical country of Oz by balloon¿.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject History of Germany - Postwar Period, Cold War, grade: A, Colby College (-), language: English, abstract: From the power vacuum in the wake of World War II stepped two new superpowers and a new world order of bipolarity. The war destroyed Europe, once a force on the international stage. The United States and the Soviet Union were left to compete against each other in all forms and arenas for sole dominance. Their decades-long struggle was nowhere more apparent than in the United Nations (UN). This international organization, designed to promote peace and provide a forum for state cooperation, became anything but, as the two superpowers vied in an all out struggle of power politics until the end of the Cold War. A prime example, and perhaps, as Dag Hammarskjöld, the UN Secretary-General from 1953 to 1961, argued, the most important UN peacekeeping operation of the Cold War was the UN intervention in the Congo, Organisation des Nations Unies au Congo (ONUC), that began in 1960. The Congolese crisis demonstrated that the Cold War cleavage was powerful enough to penetrate even the very international organization created to eliminate the influence of individual state interests; the clear East-West divide not only further escalated the internal Congolese conflict but also further strained US and Soviet relations in all aspects of the UN.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 40 pp. Englisch.

His way of speaking has become a cult over the years and his quotations are widely known, not only among Star Wars fans. Even somebody who has not seen any of the six episodes (so did the author of this paper) is very likely to know to whom sentences like the above-mentioned quotation refer. This is due to the fact that Master Yoda, to whom the sentence can be attributed, has a very unique way of speaking; the syntactic structure underlying his utterances is of a high recognition value.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 28 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,8, University of Tubingen (Englisches Seminar), course: Introduction to Literary Studies, language: English, abstract: ¿¿The marvelous performances in [this] great movie [.] [are] only slightly marred by [a] Hollywood ending.¿ Tennessee Williams¿ (cf. Yacowar). Tennessee Williams¿ play ¿A Streetcar Named Desire¿ from 1947 was often staged and interpreted. It was also the base of Elia Kazan¿s famous and remarkable movie from 1951. Since a book allows for interpretation, the movie features a different realization. This paper will contrast the written form with the film version. To illustrate the different realizations there will be a closer look at the two special and important scenes, ten and eleven, which are exemplarily for the differences in the general conversion. The decision for exactly these scenes is founded in the striking differences in conversion and adaptation and by reason of plenty of content rapidly beat down in these scenes. Due to many influences, the film departs in places completely from Williams¿ original. These influences and differences will be described in the following first part. Particular attention will then be paid to the music and noises, and the moods and emotions caused by these. And, due to being close linked to the adaptation of the whole movie, the effects of censorship will be explained. The impact is to work out in which ways the movie is adapted to the play and where it distinguishes from it.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 24 pp. Englisch.

With a limited land resource and growing population, the government of Macau and local waste management companies are currently faced with the challenge of managing the growing volume of solid wastes generated by the local population. It is therefore the focus of this study to identify and examine the barriers to effective solid waste management in Macau.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, University of Kassel, course: Teaching Grammar and Vocabulary, language: English, abstract: This paper is going to deal with the question how vocabulary can be introduced in the EFL classroom and why it is essential for students to learn new vocabulary and know how to use it in context. Furthermore, it deals with the points that are involved in presenting and demonstrating vocabulary and it also focuses on the teachers and learners and which roles they play in the whole process of vocabulary acquisition in the EFL classroom. It is important to see that the teacher needs to work actively with the students on the process of acquiring new vocabulary and the students need to be involved in the learning process. The teacher needs to show the students the necessity of learning vocabulary since this is the most important part of foreign language learning because without vocabulary they will not be able to communicate and understand text that are written in a foreign language. In order to be able to speak a foreign language properly, the students need to learn vocabulary because otherwise they will not be able to express and articulate themselves in a way that other students or native speakers of English can understand them. It is the teacher¿s task to support the learning process of the students and to show them ways of learning vocabulary through different teaching approaches and different methods. There are many different ways of presenting and teaching vocabulary in the EFL classroom but which of them are most efficient That is a question that has been discussed for many years now and one could come to the conclusion that there is not only one right way of teaching vocabulary but a variety of different approaches that can help the teacher in presenting and teaching new vocabulary. A mixture of many different ways is always more effective than using only one way of teaching which is also very boring for the students. In earlier times, the teacher centred teaching was used in classes in general but times have changed and this term paper will show what kind of different types of teaching vocabulary in the EFL classroom there are nowadays and how the students are actively involved in every step.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Sociology - Consumption and Advertising, grade: 1,0, State University of New York at Stony Brook (Linguistics), course: Sociolinguistics Seminar, language: English, abstract: Gemanagte DachfondsDie Office in your Pocket-LösungPower ist nichts ohne KontrolleTo any native English speaker, the slogans above have to seem remarkable, mostly because of the obvious mix of English and German. What might be most remarkable about them, however, is the ¿very lack of remarkability with which they are received¿ (KELLY-HOLMES 67) by German consumers when they are encountered as parts of magazine advertisements. Along with numerous other examples, these three items were extracted from the acclaimed weekly German news magazine ¿Der Spiegel¿ in order to get a clear picture of which effects English has and which role it plays in German advertisement. This paper will argue that English has an effect on virtually all of the 114 ads examined in the Spiegel issues of 4/11 and 4/18 2005, even on the ones that do not contain any English themselves. Furthermore, it will show that the effect English has on German ads extends beyond the concepts usually related with English, like technology, modernity, or science. This is a finding similar to the one suggested by MARTIN in a study on English influences on French advertisements. In her study, she also stresses that the register of advertisement is a very special one due to its one-way form of communication (MARTIN 376). Since the hearer remains hearer and can never take over the floor, he is not required to have any active knowledge of the language used in ads. This way, language can become a tool and a symbol all by itself, while the content can become secondary ¿ language can turn into a form without meaning. In how far this is true in the case of English in German ads will be a final concern of this paper.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 24 pp. Englisch.

Nowadays, English is theworld language, influencing each and every single aspect of the daily and professionallives of millions of people on an international scale. The metaphor of the Global Village often represents the ubiquitous process ofglobalisation ¿ a phenomenon that has shaped the existence of mankind in the last coupleof decades. Communication in all areas is ensured mostlythrough the use of the English language. It is remarkable, though, that English is only inthe fourth place in terms of native speaker ranking and that its proportion is decreasingsteadily.Yet what makes English so important is its use as a lingua franca ¿ an internationallanguage that is used for communication by speakers of different languages. Estimatesclaim that about 1 billion people ¿ that is about one sixth of the world population ¿ have atleast some knowledge of English and in most countries it has become one of the basicnecessities in professional life.Does this development have any influence on the way we as future professionals exploredescribe and ¿ above all ¿ teach the English language Do native speakers still ¿own¿English or is it rather ¿Globish¿, ¿Franglais¿ or ¿Denglisch¿ that should be taught In thisterm paper I aim to offer some answers to these questions and examine different theories ofteaching English as a global language.I will begin with a short chapter about the global spread of English and continue bydiscussing the difference and competition between traditional language standards and thenew role of English as an international language. I will then briefly describe some featuresof ¿Global English¿ before I will deal with my main point ¿ the future of Englishteaching. Here, I will at first describe the characteristics of the traditional methods ¿English as a foreign language (EFL) and English as a second language (ESL) ¿ and thenhave a closer look at two newer models ¿ Basic Global English (BGE) and Content andLanguage Integrated Learning (CLIL). Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,0 (B), LMU Munich (American Studies Institute), course: Hauptseminar: Women, Sexuality and Popular Culture in Twentieth Century America, language: English, abstract: Thesis Statement: Hitchcock¿s Blondes were a formation of the director¿s own creative vision, the image of women in film during the Monroe Era did not influence him in his depiction of womenWithout question, Alfred Hitchcock is considered one of the most important and most influential film directors of the Twentieth Century. Throughout his career, which lasted more than 50 years, he directed over 50 feature films, many of which are now considered classics. Interestingly, he directed his most critically acclaimed movies during the relatively short life and career of one distinctive actress: Marilyn Monroe. It is a striking fact, however, that Marilyn Monroe never starred in a Hitchcock film, although it seems that her blond hair and her star-status would have made her the perfect ¿Hitchcock Blonde¿. In this paper I will attempt to compare Hitchcock¿s female characters during the Monroe Era with the image of women in film and how they differed from each other. For this purpose, it is necessary to first take a closer look at Marilyn Monroe and the image she embodied as well as women¿s role in general during that period. In addition, Hitchcock¿s background, education and attitude towards his leading ladies must also be examined. In my analysis I will focus on three films by Hitchcock: Vertigo (1958), North By Northwest (1959) and The Birds (1963). I chose these films in particular because they not only show a certain progression in Hitchcock¿s work in the way he treats and presents his female characters, but also because these films were highly successful.Granted Hitchcock¿s rich body of work has been analyzed under various points of view by many scholars, I have not been able to locate a work solely concerned with the female characters in his films during the Monroe Era. But before turning to Alfred Hitchcock and some of his works, it is important to circumscribe the period we are looking at by focusing on the life, career and image of Marilyn Monroe.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 28 pp. Englisch.

She makes use of the three primary functional category systems (the D-system, the I-system and the C-system), which are projections of the corresponding functional categories (D, I and C).The core assumption of the X-bar model is that any word category X can function as the head of a phrase and can be projected into the corresponding phrasal category XP by addition of up to three different kinds of modifiers which are full phrasal constituents: complement, adjunct and specifier. Therefore, phrases in English have the schematic structure below:[x¿¿ specifier [x¿ adjunct [x¿ [x head] complement/s]]]Functional category systems, in contrast to lexical category systems, lack semantic content, but have grammatical meaning. Furthermore, functional elements permit only one complement. All of these functional category systems consist of a head, a complement and a nonthematic specifier position and so have a symmetrical structure. According to Robert Winter, Beethoven was the most influential composer for Franz Schubert. Schubert¿s sonatas, in particular, were modeled on Beethoven¿s in terms of form and structure. This last sonata is one of Schubert¿s popular sonatas, and is often performed. It also has been frequently criticized because of the unusual aspects of its sonata form. Winter has described the last sonata as, ¿suffused by the composer¿s characteristic melancholy, mingled with a feeling of contemplative ecstasy. The stepwise elegiac opening alternates with disembodied trills in the bass, leading to remote keys, notably f# minor, before the exposition is over.¿ This paper will discuss the following aspects of the first movement -- the form, the key schemes, and the development of themes.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 36 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Potsdam (Institut für Anglistik / Amerikanistik), course: Grammaticalization, language: English, abstract: This paper aims at observing the processes and mechanisms of grammaticalization, taking as an example the development of ought (to) and should from earlier stages of the English language up to the present day. In the very beginning, terminological questions will be discussed. Therefore, the first step will be to concentrate on the term ¿grammar¿, before the terms ¿modality¿, ¿mood¿, and ¿modal system¿ are analyzed. What will follow is a look at attempts to categorize the constructions under examination, since the allocation of ought (to) is disputed and somewhat fuzzy. Although the next step will mean not to proceed completely chronologically, it is important to describe how should and ought (to) work in PDE to better understand their development. After that, the semantic and morphosyntactic development of both constructions throughout the history of the English language will be described. Taking the observed changes as a basis, the development of the forms will finally be related to grammaticalization, where the principles proposed by Lehmann (1985) and Hopper (1991) will play a major role.BoD - Books on Demand, In de Tarpen 42, 22848 Norderstedt 32 pp. Englisch.
