II are facsimile signatures of the subscribers; a little spotting to a few text leaves. Large folio (15 x 12in) orig. brown cloth gilt, in imitation of leather, bevelled edges, spine faded, slight wear on extremities, a.e.g., Finely produced production, the photographs were taken by some of the best photographers of the day including Bassano and Elliott & Fry. Those portrayed include Arthur Balfour, Joseph Chamberlain, Randolf Churchill, George Curzon, Sir John Gorst, and Marquis of Salisbury. There was a later edition with fewer plates.

First edition, 8vo (218 x 140 mm), viii, 463, [1] pp., tinted lithographic frontispiece and 3 tinted lithograph plates (2 browned on blank margins), lacks plate on p331 (as usual), folding chart of Port Natal, 3 folding maps, 6 engraved plates, illustrations in the text, occasional foxing, a couple of gathers standing proud, original brown cloth, slightly worn at head and tail of spine, gilt lettering on spine. At the time this work was published the Colony had only been recognised as a British dependency for ten years, and its natural advantages, such as the harbour of D'Urban being safer than that of Table Bay, led the author to be optimistic about its future. The original pressed boards have knocks and wear about the edges and corners and seams. They are scuffed, dulled by handling and storage. The spine has been repaired and is effective and efficient. Within, the end papers could be more recent than the contents. The papertrims have light wear, some sunning/ discolouration. The contents are genial, pleasing (especially when taking the age of the book into account). The pages have very occasional age-related blots and smears.
