By many measures the status of women and girls has improved significantly over the last 50 years. They have achieved higher rates of literacy and education, increased their per capita income and risen to prominent roles in professional and political spheres. Moreover extensive local national and global networks of women have succeeded in putting women's concerns on the global agenda and catalysed the creation of legal and institutional mechanisms to address these concerns. Notwithstanding such positive developments a relentless epidemic of violence against women and girls perpetuated by social norms religious fanaticism and exploitative economic and political conditions continues to wreak havoc in every corner of the world. The challenge now before the international community is how to create the social, material and structural conditions in which women and girls can develop to their full potential.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. The EPS consists of three subsystems: power reactant storage and distribution, fuel cell power plants electrical power generation and electrical power distribution and control. The PRSD subsystem stores the reactants cryogenic hydrogen and oxygen and supplies them to the three fuel cell power plants, which generate all the electrical power for the vehicle during all mission phases. In addition cryogenic oxygen is supplied to the environmental control and life support system for crew cabin pressurization. The hydrogen and oxygen are stored in their respective storage tanks at cyrogenic temperatures and supercritical pressures. The storage temperature of liquid oxygen is minus 285 F and minus 420 F for liquid hydrogen. The book presents a very systematic presentation of the subject matter in simple and lucid language.

Transvaginal oocyte retrieval. 6. Biological functions and evolution. Bibliography. Index. There has been a rapid increase in the number and demand for approved biopharmaceuticals produced from animal cell culture processes over the last few years. In part this has been due to the efficacy of several humanized monoclonal antibodies that are required at large doses for therapeutic use. There have also been several identifiable advances in animal cell technology that has enabled efficient biomanufacture of these products. Gene vector systems allow high specific protein expression and some minimize the undesirable process of gene silencing that may occur in prolonged culture. Characterization of cellular metabolism and physiology has enabled the design of fed-batch and perfusion bioreactor processes that has allowed a significant improvement in product yield, some of which are now approaching 5 g/L. Many of these processes are now being designed in serum-free and animal component free media to ensure that products are not contaminated with the adventitious agents found in bovine serum. There are several areas that can be identified that could lead to further improvement in cell culture systems. In the preparation of this book it has been the author's aim to keep in mind not only the requirements of students in this subject but as well the needs of student.

Electricity and magnetism were long thought to be separate forces. It was not until the 19th century that they were finally treated as interrelated phenomena. In 1905 Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity established beyond a doubt that both are aspects of one common phenomenon. At a practical level, however electric and magnetic forces behave quite differently and are described by different equations. Electric forces are produced by electric charges either at rest or in motion. Magnetic forces on the other hand are produced only by moving charges and act solely on charges in motion.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. The causes of the rebellion. 3. Battles of 1857. 4. Results of the revolt. 5. Indian fighters of 1857. Bibliography. Index. The Great Rebellion of 1857 in India was much more than a sepoy mutiny. It was a major event in South Asian and British colonial history that significantly challenged imperialism in India. In May 1857 soldiers of the Bengal army shot their British officers, and marched on Delhi. Their mutiny encouraged rebellion by considerable numbers of Indian civilians in a broad belt of northern and central India roughly from Delhi in the west to Benares in the east. For some months the British presence in this area was reduced to beleaguered garrisons, until forces were able to launch offensives that had restored imperial authority by 1858. In India and Pakistan it has been termed as the War of Independence of 1857 or First War of Indian Independence but it is not uncommon to use terms such as the Revolt of 1857. The classification of the Rebellion being First War of Independence is not without its critics in India. The use of the term Indian Mutiny is considered by some Indian politiciansas belittling the importance of what happened and therefore reflecting an imperialistic attitude.

The history of India begins with evidence of human activity of Homo sapiens as long as 75, 000 years ago, or with earlier hominids including Homo erectus from about 500, 000 years ago. The Indus Valley Civilization, which spread and flourished in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent from c. 3300 to 1300 BCE in present day Pakistan and northwest India, was the first major civilization in South Asia. A Sophisticated and technologically advanced urban culture developed in the Mature Harappan period from 2600 to 1900 BCE. This Bronze age civilization collapsed before the end of the second millennium BCE and was followed by the iron age Vedic civilization which extended over much of the Indo-Gangetic plain and which witnessed the rise of major polities known as the Mahajanapadas.

Power politics: from yesteryears to coming years. Bibliography. Index. A coalition government is one in which several political parties must cooperate to run a country or region. These types of governments are often considered somewhat weak because there is no majority party. In such cases, the only way that policy gets approved is by each side making concessions. This type of government, which might also be known as a coalition cabinet, can be one of the most entertainingand volatileforms of government. Often it might be difficult to know how an issue is going turn out, unlike in some countries where there are two major political parties. In those cases it is rare when a majority party does not get its way. In India, many regional parties join the national parties to form a coalition government. This book explores how intra-party politics affects government formation and termination in parliamentary systems, where the norm is the formation of coalition governments.

Globalization and the de-nationalization of Indian middle class. 9. The implications of political corruption for India's economic development. Bibliography. Index. The most important causes of Poverty in India are poor agriculture, growing population, gap between rich and poor, corruption and black money. India is mainly an agricultural country. About 80% people of our country depend on agriculture. While some have a high opinion of India's growth story since its independence, some others think the country's performance in the six decades has been abysmal. It's arguably true that the Five Year Plans did target specific sectors in order to quicken the pace of development, yet the outcome hasn't been on expected lines. And, the country is taking its own sweet time to catch up with the developed world. All efforts are frustrated by lopsided strategies and inept implementation of policies. Identity politics has become a prominent subject in the Indian politics in the past few years. Rise of low castes, religious identities, linguistics groups and ethnic conflicts have contributed to the significance of identity politics in India. The discourse on identity, many scholars feel, is distinctly a modern phenomenon. Craig Calhoun aptly describes the situation when he argues that it is in the modern times we encounter intensified efforts at consolidating individual and categorical identities and reinforce self-sameness. The present book deals with all the important dimension of this subject.

Developmental psychology examines the influences of nature and nurture and on the process of human development, and processes of change in context and across time. Many researchers are interested in the interaction between personal characteristics, the individual's behaviour and environmental factors, including social context and the built environment. Ongoing debates include biological essentialism vs. neuroplasticity and stages of development vs. dynamic systems of development. Developmental psychology involves a range of fields, such as, educational psychology, child psychopathology, forensic developmental psychology, child development, cognitive psychology, ecological psychology, and cultural psychology. Influential developmental psychologists from the 20th century include Urie Bronfenbrenner, Erik Erikson, Sigmund Freud, Jean Piaget, Barbara Rogoff, Esther Thelen, and Lev Vygotsky. Sigmund Freud believed that well all has a conscious, preconscious, and unconscious level. In the conscious we are aware of our mental process. The preconscious involves information that, though not currently in our thoughts, can be brought into consciousness. Lastly, the unconscious includes mental processes we are unaware of. This book analyses various aspects of this subject. The book will be highly useful to students and teachers.

Technology transfer for sustainable development. 5. Sustainability measurement. 6. Sustainable energy. 7. Economic dimension and development. 8. Social dimension. 9. Sustainable development and globalization. 10. Environment and sustainable development. Bibliography. Index. The world is faced with challenges in all three dimensions of sustainable development-economic, social and environmental. More than 1 billion people are still living in extreme poverty, and income inequality within and among many countries has been rising, at the same time, unsustainable consumption and production patterns have resulted in huge economic and social costs and may endanger life on the planet. Achieving sustainable development will require global actions to deliver on the legitimate aspiration towards further economic and social progress, requiring growth and employment, and at the same time strengthening environmental protection. Sustainable development will need to be inclusive and take special care of the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable. Strategies need to be ambitious, action-oriented and collaborative, and to adapt to different levels of development. They will need to systemically change consumption and production patterns, and might entail, inter alia, significant price corrections, encourage the preservation of natural endowments, reduce inequality, and strengthen economic governance. The practical implementation of sustainable development concepts and the necessity of facing the challenges of the 21st century require a new paradigm for global, regional and local development. This well-written and accessible textbook provides students with an up-to-date comprehensive guide to sustainable development.

Protecting biodiversity is in our self-interest, biological resources are the pillars upon which we build civilization. Nature's products support such diverse industries as agriculture, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, horticulture, construction and waste treatment. The loss of biodiversity threatens our food supplies, opportunities for recreation and tourism, and sources of wood, medicines and energy. It also interferes with essential ecological functions. Our need for pieces of nature we once ignored is often important and unpredictable. Time after time we have rushed back to nature's cupboard for cures to illnesses or for infusions of tough genes from wild plants to save our crops from pest outbreaks. What's more, the vast array of interactions among the various components of biodiversity makes the planet habitable for all species, including humans. Our personal health, and the health of our economy and human society, depends on the continuous supply of various ecological services that would be extremely costly or impossible to replace. These natural services that would be extremely costly or impossible to replace. These natural services are so varied as to be almost infinite. For example, it would be impractical to replace, to any large extent, services such as pest control performed by various creatures feeding on one another, or pollination performed by insects and birds going about their everyday business. The book provides readers with of some of the basic principles of this subject.

This history and development of India's left movements are unique in that the country is home to two coexisting strands of modern communism. The first of these is the Parliamentary Communist Party of India, which constituted the first democratically-elected Marxist government in the country. The Parliamentary left subscribes to a social-democratic philosophy, turning to the traditional democratic institutions of governance in their quest to fulfill the Marxist-Leninist goal of establishing a classless society. The second, oppositional, strand is the revolutionary Maoist movement. This branch rejects Parliamentary democracy as a means to altering class-relations, as they see the government as an elite organization dedicated to the status quo and age-old system of class exploitation. The rise of the broad left and of the Communist movement in our own freedom struggle can be traced to the inspiring message of this world-shaking event. This will be a must read book for all those interested in left movements, their objectives and the impact on India's rural and tribal community.

The political foundations of production and exchange. 5. The collapse. 6. Political corruption. Bibliography. Index. Political economy is a term used for studying production and trade, and their relations with law, custom, and government, as well as with the distribution of national income and wealth. Political economy originated in moral philosophy. It was developed in the 18th century as the study of the economies of states, or polities, hence the term political economy. Global economic growth has slowed by roughly half since the mid-1970s roughly the period when the neoliberal agenda was beginning to take off. This book examines the changing nature of global inequalities and efforts that are being made to move toward a more egalitarian world society. This book offers an invaluable overview of an emerging field of economics and is a unique reference for students and scholars concerned with economic policy, social economics, work and labour issues, international and sustainable development, or related topics. In the first quarter of this, century the theorizing and research of the sociologists established the main direction of much of the work in the following decades. Two major currents came to characterize urban sociology in the early period. The first came from the sociologists at the University of Chicago, emphasizing the demographic and ecological structure of the city, the social disorganization and pathology of the urban normative order and the social psychology of urban existence. The second current has come to be called community studies. It consists of broad gauged ethnographic studies of the social structure of individual communities and the ways of life of the inhabitants. These two orientations are divided into the culturalists approach and the structuralists approach in the urban sociology. The culturalists emphasize on how urban life feels, how people react to living in urban areas, and how the city life is organized. This approach tries to study and explore the culture, organizational and social psychological consequences of urban life.

The term 'political participation' has a very wide meaning. It is not only related to 'Right to vote' but simultaneously relates to participation in decision making process, political activism, political consciousness, etc. Political activism and voting are the strongest areas of women's political participation. To combat gender inequality in politics, the Indian Government has instituted reservations for seats in local governments. Women turnout during India's 2014 parliamentary general elections was 65.63%, compared to 67.09% turnout for men. India ranks 20th from the bottom in terms of representation of women in Parliament. Women have held the posts of president and prime minister in India, as well as chief ministers of various states. The level and forms of women's participation in politics is largely shaped by cultural and societal barriers in the form of violence, discrimination and illiteracy. It has to be followed by large scale participation in the policy-formulation ad decision making process. This book is an attempt at analyzing the problems related to women's political participation in the Indian context.

The literature of British India. 6. Progress of science. 7. Indian legacy and western challenges. 8. Orientalist anglicist controversy. 9. Education in India colonial India. 10. Politics of association. Bibliography. Index. The formation of middle class in colonial India was the result of long historical process. Its beginning could be traced since arrival of industrialization and trading economy, but concrete observation could be made after 1857 revolution. The formation of middle class could be explained by understanding the nature of national movement. The historical context of the development of middle classes in India is quite different from those in western world. In Europe, it came through industrial revolution. In case of India, it was 19th century under the patronage of British colonial rule that the middle classes beginning to emerge. There were two layers of economic system in rural and urban India. In urban area, the middle class was the product of new economy introduced by the British while rural middle class was still based on the land distribution system. It also has been noticed that there were uneven growths in middle class. Under the British rule there was a rise of a middle class in India. Administration, education, business and occupation played a significant role in providing Indians the jobs and in creating a middle class at that time. This book describes the rise of a middle class in colonial India.

Rethinking social protection for India's working poor in the unorganized sector. Bibliography. Index. Despite the country's meteoric GDP growth rate (about 9%), poverty in India is widespread, and a variety of methods have been proposed to measure it. Whether economic growth necessarily reduces poverty has been a controversial issue. As pointed out above, it was first generally believed that benefits of economic growth would trickle down to the poor and thus alleviate poverty in the economy. This trickle-down effect of economic growth was thought to operate through an increase in employment opportunities and rise in real wages as a result of increase in productivity of workers. Moreover, the impact of economic growth on poverty reduction also depends on to what extent it is accompanied by inflation. Inflation determines the purchasing power of money wages and incomes earned by the poor people. This book would be of immense help to the academicians, researchers, students, policy-makers and the general public interested on the latest development of the Indian economy.

Index. With the increasing population demand for basic needs has been steeply rising during the past five decades in most of the developing countries. The growing populations need food clothing shelter fuel and fodder for their livestock. In India, over 60-70% of the people are living in rural areas that neither have adequate land holdings nor alternate service opportunities to produce or procure these commodities. In the absence of adequate employment opportunities the rural people are unable to generate enough wages to sustain their livelihood. The rise of emerging economies represents a challenge to traditional global power balances and raises the question of how we can combine sustainability with continued economic growth. This book is an important intervention in the debate between economic and social development. It makes the case for understanding development in economic terms as well as in terms of well-being, empowerment and participation. This book will be a valuable resource for researchers and postgraduates in development studies, geography, economics and environmental studies.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction of Urban geography. 2. Contemporary urban issues. 3. Urban policy and planning. 4. Urban geography of India's metropolitan cities. Bibliography. Index. Urban geography is the study of urban places with reference to their geographical environment. Broadly speaking, the subject matter includes origin of towns, their growth and development, their functions in and around their surroundings. The subject of urban geography has gradually taken a special place among the various branches of geography in the period after the Second World War in various foreign and Indian Universities and Colleges. With the increase of population globally, towns and cities have become magnets of economic, social and political processes. The changes brought about by these processes have become instructive as well as interesting too in case of the single phenomenon, i.e., city in an spatial context. Under these circumstances, the studies of town and cities have formed an essential part of the branch of Human Geography. Industrialization has brought into being a large number of settlements which are not certainly villages but are nucleated settlements of agricultural population. Another problem is about the concept of what is urban, which is not static and is subject to change with time as well as with space. The present book provides an authoritative and stimulating global introduction to the study of towns and cities.

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. An industry may get away with unacceptable levels or air and water pollution because the people who bear the brunt of it are poor and unable to complain effectively. A forest may be destroyed by excessive felling because the people living there have no alternatives or because timber contractors generally have more influence then forest dwellers. The integration of economic and ecological factors into the law and into decision making systems within countries has to be matched at the international level. This important book is an effort to explore different interpretations of sustainable development in both theory and practice, in developed and developing countries, and in rural and urban areas. This provocative work offers readers, students, activists, environmentalists, and policy makers the tools, metrics, and practical pathways they need to achieve sustainable development goals.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. Writing by Anglo-Indian community. 3. The official language Vs. literary English. 4. Literary English in India. 5. English critical essays. Bibliography. Index. English is a foreign language but since the British came to India the language has had an impact on several fields-in education, literary effort and as a medium of communication. Its early history began with the works of R.K. Narayan, Mulk Raj Anand, Raja Rao who contributed to Indian fiction in the 1930s. It is also associated with the works of members of the Indian diaspora, such as V.S.Naipaul, Kiran Desai, Jhumpa Lahiri, Agha Shahid Ali, Rohinton Mistry and Salman Rushdie, who are of Indian descent. IEL has a relatively recent history, being only one and a half centuries old. The first book written by an Indian in English was travels of Dean Mahomet, a travel narrative by Sake Dean Mahomet published in England in 1793. In its early stages, IEL was influenced by the Western novel. Early Indian writers used English unadulterated by Indian words to convey and experience which was essentially Indian. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay wrote Rajmohan's Wife and published it in the year 1864, it the first Indian novel written in English. Raja Rao, Indian philosopher and writer, authored Kanthapura and the Serpent and the Rope, which are Indian in terms of their storytelling qualities. Kisari Mohan Ganguli translated the Mahabharat into English, the only time the epic has ever been translated in its entirety into a European language. Rabindranath Tagore wrote in Bengali and English and was responsible for the translations of his own work into English. The book provides the students current information on the different areas of this subject. The publication is useful not only to the students but also to the research scholars and academic professionals.
