Ppxii,226,iii[questionaire]. B/w line illustrations. Soiled and used but soldily intact, second-hand paperback. This is a detailed manual of tanning, aimed at those intending to take up the craft commercially. A large portion of the book is devoted to planning and setting up a tannery. Three specimen operations are described, a two-hide a day tannery, a twenty-hide a day tannery and a two-hundred hide a day tannery. This book was produced on a grant from the UK's Ministry of Overseas Development administered through the Intermediate Technology Group, for publication jointly by the International Labour Office and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, and endorsed by the World Employment Programme. And it's still film-set from a typed manuscript. A useful book, nevertheless. .

In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Original b/w illustrated wraps 17x24cm. Printed in Geneva by Atar S.A. 47pp including 9 b/w photos on 5 plates, and facsimile letters. Dated Jan 1952 to p3. Covers good, lightly dusted and creased. Interiors good with several sidelines and some underlines. Rare, with Worldcat and Jisc recording 11 locations (BL, Sciences Po, BnF, IISG, Universitat Mannheim, ZBW, Universitat Bamberg, Princeton, LoC, Department of State, ILO). This is not the ILO report, but rather a hard-hitting critique of it, contrasting its findings with the situation on the ground. It was printed and probably issued in Geneva, but unfortunately the author / publisher is not named. Possibly it is a riposte by or on behalf of the Government of Iran's delegation to the ILO. It would certainly have supported the Mossadegh Government's case for the recent nationalisation of AIOC in March 1951. The process started in November 1948, when the Iranian delegate to the ILO "complained against the very hard living conditions of the Iranian Petroleum workers". In response, the ILO sent a mission in Dec 1949, which spent 3 weeks visiting the oil centres, and published its report in Nov 1950. This document seeks to demonstrate how the mission failed in its objective, how its composition was biased, and how the AIOC lied about its record and continued to shirk its responsibilities. It opens by stating how from the outset, understanding of the mission's purpose diverged. Iran thought the mission would "carry out with the greatest impartiality an investigation on conditions of labour in the Petroleum Industry in Iran". But "judging from the result, the mission appears to have set itself a different aim altogether. It seems to have taken greater pain to excuse the AIOC for all the shortcomings they have observed". It argues the mission was inherently biased, as it was led by a Brit (John Price), with other members including an Italian (PP Farro), and an Iranian "with no greater part than the role of an interpreter" (Mr Djamalzadeh). The AIOC is accused of doing "all in its power to whitewash all that could be whitewashed" in advance, and the mission was advised "not to say anything in their report which would worsen relations between the Iranian Government and the Company - since negotiations regarding revision of the terms of the concession were then in progress". The main body of the document contains an analysis of the ILO report, quoting from it, and providing supporting data. It covers contract labour, housing and accommodation, amenities and social services (water and electricity, food distribution, recreation), medical services, and composition of staff (comparing Iranians and foreigners by grade). The plates show "the appalling living conditions of the Company labour". They reveal the extent of poverty in the form of a series of crowded ramshackle and poorly equipped dwellings at Bawarda Tank Farm, some made of tin plate with "not a single patch of shade with the inside temperature unbearable in summer", and a tented camp in Abadan, which by that time had been operating for 30 years. Appendices include data on labour housing in field areas, measurements of staff quarters, summary of graded and non-graded staff accommodation, overcrowding in the best company labour quarters in Abadan, and AIOC's economy drive. There are also letters marked "strictly confidential", the Abadan Refinery Agreement, and an inter-departmental memo between Fields Managers on Contract Day Labour.
