Softcover, G-W Press Ltd, London, 2000. Bilingual in English and Italian. Approximately 4.5" x 6.5". This is a transcript of their video work. Rare. Printed in a limited edition of 1000 copies. Vicinato is a video work created by conversations between Liam Gillick and fellow artists at the end of the 1990s. The young artists gathered in Monte Carlo, Monaco, near the Mediterranean, talk about various topics such as politics, aesthetics, and idealism. As the title 'Vicinato', which means 'neighbor' in Italian, reflects, the participants of this conversation who discuss the possibility of another form of art are depicted as friends who leisurely mingle with one another. In 1995, artists Carsten Höller, Philippe Parreno and Rirkrit Tiravanija collaborated to produce a film. After some discussion, they wrote a text in English which was translated into Italian. This script provides a dialogue for three characters. Through the writing process, separate identities merge into one and divide again. There is no clear correlation between an author and character, but particular traits are recognisable. Much care was taken to ensure that, in the Italian script, each character is allocated the same number of words. This process allows ideas, rather than personalities, to take center stage. The title VICINATO is best translated as 'neighbourhood'. The film shows the kind of complex interaction that is possible between friends. The casting session and filming took place in Milan during the early autumn of 1995. Shot in black and white on 16mm stock, Vicinato was made to be projected as a film, not a video. It was first screened in late 1995 at Studio Guenzani, Milan, with the original Italian dialogue. An English language version was also produced. Rather than try to lip-sync the film, a voice-over was recorded. It is this version that is exhibited at Schipper & Krome, Cologne.

Walker and other African-American members of the order, the Saint Luke Building, etc. Printed wrappers. Small tears at the crown, else near fine. A rich source of information about this important African-American fraternal order and business enterprise. Text includes a state-by-state directory of delegates, the annual report by Walker, financial and statistical reports, additional texts by Walker, including her 33-line poem "Let's Go!" Also included is a detailed account of the four-day meeting, reports by various committees, a list of officers and board members, etc. Not in *Blockson* or *Work* (see Blockson 3302 for a later title related to Walker, and the Independent Order of Saint Luke. Unrecorded by *OCLC* (which does note a single holding of a 1933 edition, held by Duke). The association was founded in 1867 by a former slave, Mary Prout, to assist the sick and aged, and to bury its members. Under the leadership of Walker, the Society became involved in various business interests, including the ownership of the largest African-American bank in Richmond, Virginia. Maggie Lena Mitchell (1867-1934) was born in Richmond, Virginia. Her mother was formerly enslaved, and her father was an Irish-born abolitionist and journalist. "At the age of 14 she joined the local council of the Independent Order of St. Luke, a fraternal burial society, established in 1867, in Baltimore, administered to the sick and aged, promoted humanitarian causes and encouraged individual self-help and integrity." According to the National Women's History Museum, in 1902 Mrs. Walker established a newspaper, *The St. Luke Herald* and founded the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in 1903 where she served as the bank's first president becoming the first woman to charter a bank in the United States. Later the bank merged with two other Richmond banks to become The Consolidated Bank and Trust Company, the oldest continually African American-operated bank in the United States that continues to this day. In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing of the critically acclaimed French artists' publication: an artist's book and novel of speculative fiction. Publisher's original white card covers, illustration after an original drawing by Philippe Parreno to the upper cover titles printed in black to the upper cover and spine. A very near fine copy, just a hint of rubbing to the binding extremities. The contents are clean and bright throughout. Scarce. In late 1994 Philippe Parreno dictated to Liam Gillick and Jack Wendler a fantastical description of a party that had not yet occured. Snow Dancing, is a record of his original conversation and the party it described. At the Consortium in Dijon two months later, hundreds of people were invited to participate in a promotional event that played out Parreno's earlier description. The party lasted one hour and a half hours, exactly as long as it had taken to narrate it and about as long as it will take you to read this book. "Snow Dancing (1995) started with the publication of a book in which I described a promotional event, a kind of party or festival. The reading time of the text was about the same as the event itself. So the book was a score that was performed in Le Consortium in Dijon. I transformed the exhibition space that hosted the party, and this time-based architecture became the exhibition - people were invited to visit an architecture produced by a party. So the book was a score that produced a space." - Parreno, Philippe interview with Tom Morton, "Team Spirit": Frieze, 2004.
