(in matters of) Karl is a research project about the H?cker Album. The H?cker Album is the private photo-album of SS First Lieutenant Karl H?cker. The album gives a unique insight in the conditions and ways of leisure of the Nazis, who were working at Auschwitz during WW2. Most of these photographs were taken around the so called Solah tte, only 30 km from Auschwitz. In 2008 Annette Behrens travelled to the Solah tte, and found this still intact and used as a holiday home for tourist, with no reference to the historic background. In the next years Annette Behrens tried to reconstruct the history of Karl H?cker and the Solah tte, using archives in Poland, Germany and the United States. First edition, signed in Paris in 2017, by the author Dutch photographer and visual artist Esther Hovers. This photo book is about 'intelligent' surveillance systems; or facial recognition cameras. These are cameras that are said to be able to detect deviant behaviour within public spaces. The book - in leporello / accordion folded format - centres on the question of 'normal' behaviour. It aims to raise this question by basing the project on eight different "anomalies". These anomalies are signs in body language and movement that could indicate criminal intent. It is through these anomalies that the algorithms are built and cameras are able to detect deviant behaviour. The work consists of photographs and pattern drawings, forming an analysis of different settings in and around the business district of Brussels. At the time this book was named Best of 2017 by Photobookstore Magazine and was shortlisted for the Aperture Paris Photobook Award 2018. 'Nationalfeiertag', is a book about one of the biggest, and most monitored squares in the world: Tiananmen Square in Beijing. In April and May of 1989 student protests took place and there was a massacre on June 4th. Officials and police attempted to control the images taken, but Katja Stuke filmed a few hours of material at the time and on the Chinese National Holiday in October. From this footage she extracted hundreds of portraits. The book combines these portraits with newspaper clippings which are collected and spread by the June 4th Museum in Hong Kong to keep the memory of the protests of 1989 alive.
