In den Warenkorbpaperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

In den WarenkorbAn uncommon women's suffrage birthday book, published to fundraise for the Scottish Council of the Women's Freedom League, compiled by Eunice Murray, future president of the WFL in Scotland and the first Scotswoman to stand for parliament. It comprises contributions from a number of significant Scottish suffragettes including Helen Fraser, Alexia Jack, and Anna Munro. The fight for women's suffrage was a long campaign which required significant funds. Beyond personal donations, societies raised money through staging entertainment, publishing journals and newspapers, holding jumble and raffle sales, and producing commercial merchandise such as games, gifts, and souvenirs tailored to the cause. "The development of these items drew on the considerable artistic and marketing skills of members" (Bodleian). Attractively produced birthday books were a popular choice. The present example was issued by the WFL's Scottish Council, a semi-autonomous unit based at 302 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. "The WFL had a strong Scottish base in Glasgow, where Teresa Billington-Greig lived, and where Anna Munro was organizer. The Scottish Council was reconstructed in early 1910, and was then composed of an honorary secretary and an honorary treasurer and the secretary, or delegate, from each branch" (Crawford, p. 722). This book was seen through the press by Eunice Murray, who in 1909 had accepted a post with the WFL in Scotland as secretary for its "scattered members", or those living outside large cities. Murray dedicates the book to WFL President Charlotte Despard, Organising Secretary Teresa Billington-Greig, and Secretary Edith How-Martyn; a portrait of each is included opposite their respective birthdays. Although undated, it must have been published sometime between February 1909 (when Despard was elected President) and December 1910 (when Billington-Greig resigned), as Murray's preface gives their titles accurate at the time of printing. The Bodleian dates their copy, which was a feature piece in their 2016 exhibition Sappho to Suffrage: Women Who Dared, to c.1910. Here each day of the month is paired with an inspirational quotation, each supplied by a different League member or supporter, with their name given above; many contributors are credited through initials only, likely a deliberate obfuscation of identity. The quotations come from a variety of sources, from the expected classical thinkers and stoics (Marcus Aurelius, Plato, Tacitus) and canonical writers (Shakespeare, Tennyson, Shelley) to prime ministers (even adversaries like Asquith) and philosophers (Confucius, Pascal, Schiller). Some of the notable women cited include Mary Astell, Isabella Bird, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Constance Smedley, Olive Schreiner, Frances Willard, and Mary Wollstonecraft. Speeches by suffrage leaders like Despard and Millicent Garrett Fawcett also feature. Other contributors to the WFL's Birthday Book include the Australian lecturer Murial Matters, famous for her participation in the 1908 grille incident at the Ladies' Gallery in the House of Commons (she provides a quote from Ibsen's A Doll's House, one of her formative influences), actress Maud Arncliffe Sennett, and socialist Anne Cobden-Sanderson. There is one hand written addition to this copy, the name "N. L. Atkinson" on 24 February; we have been unable to trace their identity, though it seems likely that they are the original owner. Only three Atkinsons appear in the Ancestry and Women's Suffrage Project databases: Carmen, Helen Agnes, and Jane. We can trace seven examples in institutions: six in the UK (British Library, LSE, Oxford, Cambridge, National Library of Scotland, University of Glasgow) and one in the US (Boston Public Library. Bodleian Libraries, article on "Suffrage: fundraising", part of their Sappho to Suffrage: Women Who Dared online exhibition, 2016. Small octavo. With three black and white photographic portraits of the WFL's leaders, Charlotte Despard, Teresa Billington-Greig, and Edith How-Martyn. Original paper-covered boards, blocked in horizontal stripes in the colours of the WFL (white, gold, and green), front cover lettered in gilt, brown endpapers. Hand written name of one "N. L. Atkinson" in blue ink to 24 February entry. Spine darkened, ends bumped, extremities gently worn and covers soiled, contents generally clean with occasional light foxing, book block cracked in a couple of places but holding very firm; a very good copy of a scarce item.
