In the 19th century the eastern Savannah (now divided between the countries of Nigeria, Niger, Mali, and Cameroon) was one of the most neglected parts of the African continent, and yet at the same time one of the most culturally sophisticated. During this period warfare among the peoples of the eastern Savannah, and in particular the three most significant native states the Sokoto Caliphate, the ancient kingdom of Bornu, and the somewhat less ancient state of Bagirmi was largely dominated by cavalry, and a significant proportion of these mounted troops were armoured. This groundbreaking book covers the period that began with the Sokoto jihad in 1804 and ended with the extinction of the Savannah states by the European colonial powers at the turn of the 20th century. In addition to providing a brief outline history of the three states, it examines in detail the arms, equipment and methods of warfare used by their armoured knights and infantry, and includes in addition sections on their horses, artillery, flags, fortifications, and clothing. It is illustrated throughout with contemporary photographs and engravings.

Despite the fact that the very longevity of their ancient civilisation had led to stagnation, the 19th-century Chinese still regarded themselves as the world s only truly civilised people, and held all other countries in contempt. This attitude and the Celestial Empire s traditional distrust of all foreigners, exacerbated by misunderstandings and high-handed behaviour on both sides, guaranteed that relations between the Empire and the Western world could only deteriorate as the century wore on, and resulted in war, invasion, and political humiliation. Defeat in its wars with the British in 1839 42 and 1858 60 underlined the utter ineffectiveness of China s antiquated armed forces and inspired a series of bloody insurrections between the 1850s and 1870s which resulted in the loss of tens of millions of lives. Every war against a foreign power ended in ignominious defeat, and in 1900 Peking itself was occupied by a multi-national expeditionary force sent in to rescue its nationals from xenophobic Boxer rebels. In this book Ian Heath provides an illustrated study of the Empire s armed forces during this turbulent period, including its complex organisational structure, its arms and uniforms, and its tactics. Such foreign-officered units as the Ever-Victorious Army (led by American Frederick Ward and later by Charles Gordon of subsequent Khartoum fame) are also covered, as are the armies of the many revolutionary movements, including the Taipings, Boxers, Panthays, Miao, Tungans, and Nien. Illustrations include 183 drawings of warriors and soldiers, 39 other illustrations, and six maps.

This volume provides a detailed study of the astonishing reinvention of the Empire of Japan during the 19th century as it emerged from 200 years of self-imposed isolation to become a military superpower. As late as the 1850s the country remained technologically and militarily stagnant, but within just 40 years in what must rank as the most rapid and comprehensive cultural transformation in world history it had managed not only to absorb and successfully imitate several hundred years of Western technological progress, but had become one of the late Victorian world s top ten military powers. During the same timeframe it also embraced the concept of colonialism, and with its invasion of China in 1894 and virtual occupation of Korea soon after took its first fateful steps along a road that would lead, with horrible inevitability, to head-on collision with the Allies in World War Two. The evolution of its army, arms, uniforms and tactics during the 19th century are all covered, from samurai armour to Western uniforms, and from katana to Krupps. Korea, by contrast, participated only reluctantly in military modernisation, and adopted a limited programme of reform only under foreign pressure especially Japanese, but also American, Russian and Chinese in the closing decades of the century. Nevertheless such reforms as the country attempted proved too little and too late, and were insufficient to prevent Korea becoming first a puppet state and then a colony of its maritime neighbour. The final part of the book comprises a detailed index for the five volumes of the series published thus far.

Following a similar format to the author s book on East Africa, this volume covers the area now largely occupied by the countries of Gabon, the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, and Malawi. This was the archetypal Darkest Africa of 19th-century exploration, and many of its indigenous inhabitants lived at the time in remote regions. Consequently most of what we know about these peoples comes from the fleeting impressions of such European travellers as encountered them and all too often their experiences were limited to a flight of arrows from an unseen enemy concealed in the forest. This book therefore sets out put such confrontations into context, and to describe the organisation, tactics, costumes and weapons of the protagonists in this unique theatre of conflict. Chris Peers authoritative text is accompanied by photographs, maps and 120 drawings of warriors, troop types and flags.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. 168 pages: illustrations, maps : 31 cm. This is the first ever in-depth study of one of the most remote and neglected theatres of 19th-century colonial conflict, where for decades British and Indian troops fought a forgotten war against merciless warbands of head-hunters and slave-raiders. Despite being an unsettled and troublesome part of the subcontinent, the north-east corner of British India was nevertheless more than once dubbed 'the forgotten frontier' by contemporaries, since it was the 'romantic' North-West Frontier which invariably grabbed the lions' share of government and media attention. Yet the North-East Frontier witnessed a far greater amount of military activity as its many distinct and mutually hostile peoples sought to preserve their traditional lands and cultures against each other and the foreign powers Britain, Burma, and China which sought to subdue them. This volume covers all of the region's principal indigenous peoples Abors, Akas, Chin-Lushais, Daflas, Garos, Khamtis, Khasis, Mikirs, Miris, Mishmis, Nagas, and Singphos as well as its few established native states (Assam, Cachar, Manipur, and Tripura). The dress, arms, organisation, and tactics of each are examined in often considerable detail. The greater part of the information contained in this book assembled from a considerable range of official and other contemporary sources will be entirely new to readers, and is here made available to a wider audience for the very first time. Illustrations include 125 drawings of warriors, 53 other illustrations, and nine maps.

This book should not be looked upon as a political or social history, although an understanding of these aspects would give a clearer insight into why and how Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay became embroiled in the largest war ever fought in South America. It is, rather, a work covering the military side of the events that took place between 1810-70, with a hint of the political undercurrents that motivated the various wars fought in the region during the same period. Hopefully it will encourage readers to become interested in Latin and Central American military history--a vast field of research largely neglected in both Britain and the United States.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. 167 pages : illustrations, maps ; 31 cm. This volume is probably the very first to examine the 19th-century military history of this remote region, wedged uncomfortably and ultimately terminally between the British, Russian, and Chinese empires: Central Asia s long-established Uzbek states of Bokhara, Kokhand, and Khiva were all destined to submit to the expanding Russian Empire in the 1870s, while the ancient kingdoms of the Himalayas would be contested between the vigorous British Empire and ailing China whose nominal satellites and tributary states they largely were before mostly ending up in British hands. The resultant unrest throughout the region led in turn to the outbreak of rebellion in Chinese Turkestan, and to the brief existence of a new kingdom, Kashgaria, whose leader Yakub Beg was courted by British and Russians alike as they tried respectively to close or open this perceived door into British India s most exposed flank. Of the several native states in existence as the century commenced, only Tibet and Nepal would remain nominally independent as it ended, and free to fight their own wars. This book describes the arms, dress, organisation, and tactics of the armies of all the region s native states during the 19th century, covering Baltistan, Bhutan, Bokhara, Chinese Turkestan, Kashgaria, Kashmir, Khiva, Khokand, Khotan, Kuldja, Ladakh, Nepal, Sikkim, and Tibet, as well as the nomadic Kirghiz and Turcomans, and provides details of their interaction with the British, Russian, and Chinese empires. Illustrations include 133 drawings of warriors and soldiers, 41 other illustrations, and 12 maps.

Covering those Asian armies which fought alongside the British, from the foundations laid in 1497 to the demise of company rule. This book traces the developments in the structure, armament, and uniforms of the armies maintained by the imperial powers in Asia throughout the colonial period, with illustrative order of battle material wherever possible. The evolutionary development of the armies which maintained the colonial powers extraordinary ascendency in the East for four and a half centuries has seldom been surveyed as a whole, and certainly not in the kind of organisational detail included in this book.
