In the 19th century the eastern Savannah (now divided between the countries of Nigeria, Niger, Mali, and Cameroon) was one of the most neglected parts of the African continent, and yet at the same time one of the most culturally sophisticated. During this period warfare among the peoples of the eastern Savannah, and in particular the three most significant native states the Sokoto Caliphate, the ancient kingdom of Bornu, and the somewhat less ancient state of Bagirmi was largely dominated by cavalry, and a significant proportion of these mounted troops were armoured. This groundbreaking book covers the period that began with the Sokoto jihad in 1804 and ended with the extinction of the Savannah states by the European colonial powers at the turn of the 20th century. In addition to providing a brief outline history of the three states, it examines in detail the arms, equipment and methods of warfare used by their armoured knights and infantry, and includes in addition sections on their horses, artillery, flags, fortifications, and clothing. Despite the fact that the very longevity of their ancient civilisation had led to stagnation, the 19th-century Chinese still regarded themselves as the world s only truly civilised people, and held all other countries in contempt. This attitude and the Celestial Empire s traditional distrust of all foreigners, exacerbated by misunderstandings and high-handed behaviour on both sides, guaranteed that relations between the Empire and the Western world could only deteriorate as the century wore on, and resulted in war, invasion, and political humiliation. Defeat in its wars with the British in 1839 42 and 1858 60 underlined the utter ineffectiveness of China s antiquated armed forces and inspired a series of bloody insurrections between the 1850s and 1870s which resulted in the loss of tens of millions of lives. Every war against a foreign power ended in ignominious defeat, and in 1900 Peking itself was occupied by a multi-national expeditionary force sent in to rescue its nationals from xenophobic Boxer rebels. In this book Ian Heath provides an illustrated study of the Empire s armed forces during this turbulent period, including its complex organisational structure, its arms and uniforms, and its tactics. Such foreign-officered units as the Ever-Victorious Army (led by American Frederick Ward and later by Charles Gordon of subsequent Khartoum fame) are also covered, as are the armies of the many revolutionary movements, including the Taipings, Boxers, Panthays, Miao, Tungans, and Nien. This volume provides a detailed study of the astonishing reinvention of the Empire of Japan during the 19th century as it emerged from 200 years of self-imposed isolation to become a military superpower. As late as the 1850s the country remained technologically and militarily stagnant, but within just 40 years in what must rank as the most rapid and comprehensive cultural transformation in world history it had managed not only to absorb and successfully imitate several hundred years of Western technological progress, but had become one of the late Victorian world s top ten military powers. During the same timeframe it also embraced the concept of colonialism, and with its invasion of China in 1894 and virtual occupation of Korea soon after took its first fateful steps along a road that would lead, with horrible inevitability, to head-on collision with the Allies in World War Two. The evolution of its army, arms, uniforms and tactics during the 19th century are all covered, from samurai armour to Western uniforms, and from katana to Krupps. Korea, by contrast, participated only reluctantly in military modernisation, and adopted a limited programme of reform only under foreign pressure especially Japanese, but also American, Russian and Chinese in the closing decades of the century. Nevertheless such reforms as the country attempted proved too little and too late, and were insufficient to prevent Korea becoming first a puppet state and then a colony of its maritime neighbour. The final part of the book comprises a detailed index for the five volumes of the series published thus far.

This volume is probably the very first to examine the 19th-century military history of this remote region, wedged uncomfortably and ultimately terminally between the British, Russian, and Chinese empires: Central Asia s long-established Uzbek states of Bokhara, Kokhand, and Khiva were all destined to submit to the expanding Russian Empire in the 1870s, while the ancient kingdoms of the Himalayas would be contested between the vigorous British Empire and ailing China whose nominal satellites and tributary states they largely were before mostly ending up in British hands.
