Paperback. Zustand: Good. Seduced by the Light is the first and only biography of Mina Miller Edison, the wife of Thomas Edison, the woman who created and shaped the myth of one of the most seminal figures in America's history. The Thomas Edison we think we know was essentially created by Mina Miller Edison. Exhaustively researched by author Alexandra Rimer, this account draws on unprecedented access to Edison family diaries, memoirs, and letters to look below the surface of the Edison family during the Gilded Age from the little-known perspective of this female protagonist. Following his first wife's death, Thomas Edison went in search of the next mother to his children and chose a wealthy twenty-year-old socialite from Ohio who was nineteen years his junior. What Mina did not know at the time was that Edison was a terrible father, completely neglecting his children and, ultimately, Mina herself. Absorbed in his work, he only interacted with his family at dinner, and sometimes not even then. The result was a dysfunctional family overseen by a saintly matriarch who went to great lengths to protect Edison's reputation as well as that of his wayward children.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Christians in the 21st century can feel like the 'camel going through the eye of the needle' (Matthew 19:24) as they increase in both wealth that is often the root of all evil (1 Timothy 6:10) and education that might be a wisdom foolish to God (1 Cor 1:20). This is the story of the spiritual challenges of affluence and upward social mobility told by the world-renowned religious scholar, Dr. David Edwin Harrell, Jr. (1930-2021). His numerous pioneering histories of lower-class and marginalized Christian movements in American history - from the Disciples of Christ to the Assemblies of God - demonstrated society's gradual pull of members of these churches away from their original Bible-based and countercultural sects and into more worldly denominations. Harrell's life also traveled this road of increasing influence and acceptance into the highest levels of cultural standing as a dean among historians of American church history and as a Fulbright Scholar and State Department envoy to India. But Harrell resisted the domestication of his own personal faith, converting to discipleship to Jesus within the most countercultural wing of the American Restoration Movement, the congregational (non-institutional) churches of Christ. This biography is the heretofore untold story of Harrell's lifelong spiritual pilgrimage through 70 years of religious publishing, itinerant preaching, doctrinal discussion, and global missionary efforts. It is a journey leading to a uniquely informed advocacy for restoring primitive Christianity in the present day and seeking to follow the New Testament pattern for individual faith and congregational practice in independent local churches around the world. Throughout his life, Harrell would guide younger Christians into better understanding of restoration movements seeking to follow both Jesus and his apostles in their self-emptying love and revelation of God's will. This was, Harrell observed, a long and honorable history of ostracized sects seeking to escape the corruptions of history to be simply Christian. The history of humble spiritual journey toward God amid societal affluence and worldly attainment is also his story.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This significant volume is more than a biography of events in the life of James R. Cope. It seeks to understand his character and conscience as he wrestled with far-reaching issues affecting both the college and the members of the church. Building on the Good provides insights into the greater cultural background of rural Tennessee, which formed Cope's lifelong persona. It tells how his association with significant school men shaped his philosophy of education. It addresses the development of thinking that led to principles upon which Florida College was built, and it shares much about the history of the College during the thirty-three-year presidency of James R. Cope. Building on the Good explains the brotherhood issues involving colleges operated by members of the churches of Christ. It addresses the historical origins and scriptural basis for the doctrinal positions Cope conscientiously adopted after serious study. At the same time, it tells of his constant emphasis upon personal faith and family. We hope you will thoroughly enjoy time well spent with Building on the Good. This book is written by Dr. C.G. 'Colly' Caldwell (PhD., Vanderbilt University) served as president of Florida College from 1991 to 2009, and even longer as a Professor of Biblical Studies and Church History. He has long served the Lord's Church in the Tampa area, at congregations such as Citrus Park church of Christ and Carrolwood church of Christ, supported always by his beloved wife Linda.…
