The view that so-called neutral bodies (neutrum), neither healthy nor ill, exist was first introduced in the Galenic Ars medica at the turn of the third century. Since this book became a medical university textbook in the thirteenth century, the idea of neutral bodies was systematically studied in medicine up to the early seventeenth century. This study, which introduces their various definitions and relation to the concepts of health and illness in scholastic and Renaissance medicine, is the first systematic investigation of the conceptual history of a neutral body. The main focus of this study is on the Renaissance with the special interest in the humanist impact on medicine.

By looking beyond the canonical dance history and bringing in source material from the archives in northern Europe, the book offers a new insight into the history of Russian ballet in the West. This book focuses on the tours made by dancers from the Maryinsky Theatre from St. Petersburg to Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Berlin in the early summers of 1908 1910. The star of the group was Anna Pavlova, for whom these performances were a stepping-stone to an international career. The tours were organized by a Finnish impresario, Edvard Fazer, who at the time was running his own concert agency in Helsinki. Laakkonen examines the local dance scene in these cities and places the reception of the Imperial Russian Ballet in a larger framework of music, theatre and the visual arts. She shows the contemporary audiences' fascination with the character dancing and the virtuosity of the Russian dancers, and connects the discussion on ballet with the emerging modernism in dance.

The North Calotte, which comprises Finnish Lapland, northern Sweden, northern Norway and the Kola Peninsula in Russia, has a history which is fascinating in many respects. The nineteenth century saw the closure of frontiers in the multicultural peripheral regions of northern Europe as well. This study analyses the demarcations of physical and cultural borders that were made in the area and the networks of interaction that existed there. In particular, ethnic relations within the population constituted a source of tension in the history of the region. The work demonstrates that the frequently used dichotomy "pioneer settlers vs Saamis" employs scientifically incommensurable terms; "pioneer settler" refers to an occupational group, "Saami" to an ethnic one. The writer also questions the claim that the authorities deliberately oppressed the Saami as an ethnic group in the nineteenth century. There was political and ethnic oppression, but it would seem to have been directed primarily at the nomadiic reindeer-herding Saamis, not all the Saamis. 0.0.

The other articles introduce the reader not only to the manuscripts and printed publications in Arabic, but also in other Islamic languages used in Daghestan. For example, Persian and Turkic inscriptions and manuscripts have hardly been studied before this publication.
