Information support for the legal profession the role and value of precedent. 2. Information support for the legal profession an historical perspective. Appendix 1. 3. The continuum of legal research. Appendix 2 Academic writings that influenced decisions. Index. Information support for the legal profession is the text of the 14th Dr. S.R. Ranganathan Memorial lectures delivered by Justice Gopal Sri Ram Judge Court of Appeal Malaysia Kuala Lumpur from 23rd to 25th August 2006 in Bangalore. Information support is of great importance in every professional field and work. It is inter alia important to the legal profession. The law is enduring. It serves the society and serves the exigencies of change of times and social needs. The principles of basic law are eternal and universal. But concepts change from time to time according to the needs of the society and the demand of public interest. A person in the legal profession has to keep abreast with development of law. Information plays a key role in this regard. The law changes and develops not merely by legislation but by the disciplined interpretative of judges. While judges follow the principles of binding precedents they shape the law to the needs of the situation by appropriately interpreting such precedents. In this process they make law to meet the ends of justice so that law and justice are congruous. In the first lecture Justice Gopal Sri Ram demonstrates the role and value of precedent. He traces the history of information support for the legal profession in the second lecture. In the third lecture the various sources of information used also by the legal profession are discussed. The primary source of information are the text books. Although hard copies of law reports are still the preferred source of case law research online electronic data bases are becoming popular. Websites are available for information in legal matters. Legal information institutes are established for the dissemination of information. Examples of academic writings that influenced decisions are given. 116 pp.

Though the Indian economy has achieved a substantial growth rate of 9 percent the problem of unemployment and poverty in the rural areas of the country continues to be a cause of serious concern. During the last three decades the rich have become richer and the poor miserably poorer. Even the marginal farmers have become landless labourers. Due to ineffective delivery system and mismanagement of several employment programmes initiated by the Central Government the poor have not been benefited from them. To provide means of livelihood and reduce the quantum of poverty especially in rural areas the ruling United progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre enacted a law to enable the poor people in the rural areas to get 100 days employment with legal guarantee. This pro active measure became a law when the National Rural Employment Guarantee Bill was unanimously passed by the Parliament on August 23 2005 and notified in September 2005. The book presents the findings of a pilot study on implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) conducted in four districts Sitapur Raebareli Unnao and Barabanki eight blocks sixteen villages interviewing 400 beneficiaries (25 per village) on the worksite. Major findings reveal that the beneficiaries while expressing satisfaction on the new initiatives taken by the Government demanded increase in wage rates work site facilities as enshrined in the Act and increase in the number of working days in a financial year. The study also reveals that there is wide appreciation of the NREGA in the rural areas with significant representation of beneficiaries from scheduled castes and Other Backward Classes. There is need for vigorous identification of job opportunity well in advance and strict monitoring of the implementation process. Creating greater awareness about the scheme through various local media facilities available in the rural areas vigorous efforts to involve women workers in warranted. Though the sample size of the study is small it reveals interesting findings. It would be necessary to explore all the aspects of implementation process and plug various loopholes. 144 pp.

This is the moving story of the life of Ramanujan the great Indian mathematical genius who appeared suddenly as a meteor in 1887 rushed through a short span of thirty two years consumed himself and disappeared with equal suddenness. At the age of thirteen he had mastered Loney's Trigonometry and even calculated the length of the equator of the earth. Son of a clerk in a cloth merchant's shop in Kumbakonam before he was 23 had filled a whole notebook with hundreds of mathematical theorems and results in spite of poverty unemployment and absence of anyone who could understand his work. Many of the theorems were new to the mathematical world and some have not yet been proved. The book unfolds in quick succession the chief events of his life beginning with his search in 1911 for a clerical post always carrying his notebook under his arm to his sailing to England in 1914 and his return home in 1919. In Cambridge he was soon acknowledged to be the most remarkable mathematician of our times and was elected a fellow of the Trinity College of Cambridge and a fellow of the royal society at the early age of thirty. The book contains the reminiscences of several surviving contemporaries of Ramanujan. It highlights his penetrating intuition and childlike simplicity. He was a seer in mathematics. Though agnostic in arguments he was ever conscious of the immanence of God. 138 pp.

Library Personalization provides the library with a viable mechanism to manipulate the information base using available technologies so that the library appears as a set of separate smaller libraries holding more effective content to individual users. It helps users to start with a generic library and by making selections and choices create a personal library with pre selected and most relevant information resources. Also the user can view the different services offered by the library through a single interface with links to different services and resources in multiple servers inside and outside the library. It has also been designed to enable faculty members and researchers busy with teaching and research work to save the considerable time spent in collecting information rather than using it. Evolution of full text information in electronic format like e books e journals and web resources along with emerging database and web technology made it feasible to connect content as per users interests. With the advent of electronic full text resources and especially the internet users need a Web like search and access at the click of a link facility for information resources stored in the library also which is fully met through personalization services. In the absence of such personal information support users be left to fend for themselves and forced to scan the information overload through library OPACs electronic databases networked electronic content etc. which may often lead to information under use severely hampering research and teaching output. 230 pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. RFID, the acronym for Radio Frequency Identification, is a technology that uses radio frequency wave transmission for identifying a person or object. The use of RFID by libraries over the last few years has grown drastically. Adoption of RFID technology has enabled the libraries to take the inventory of thousands of items in their collection within days instead of months. RFID has enabled the users to check-out and return library items by themselves automatically round the clock. Besides speedy checkouts, the RFID technology helps in keeping the library collections in proper order and saves the librarians from repetitive strain injuries. RFID provides better theft control, reduces non-returns and chances of mis-shelving of a library's assets. This book examines what RFID technology is and how it works in the library scenario. The book reviews the development of RFID technology and its effects on library operations over the last couple of decades. An assessment of current implementation of the technology in libraries and the lessons learnt provide suggestions to overcome the issues faced at practical level in any library. The book also looks at the future technologies developing and how they might be applied in libraries. Presented from a library perspective this title will assist the library and information community in understanding RFID technology. The libraries planning to implement this technology can benefit from the authors' rich and practical knowledge of the subject. (Jacket).
