By using visual storytelling as a tool, designers communicate events and opinions in a way that stands out from the continuous stream of images we encounter everyday. As there is always more than one side to a story, there are different perspectives from which the visual storyteller can work. By exploring various perspectives designers show the influence they have on a society dominated by images. The projects in this book display how a socially relevant attitude combined with these various perspectives on storytelling extend the designers role Journalist / Scientist / Agitator / Poet.

More than forty-five years ago, Doug, then just 20 years old, exchanged Vancouver for the desolate rainforest of San Josef Bay, Vancouver Island. He built his house on the foundations of a pioneer house, with the help of the last solitary forest dwellers. Doug found work as a carpenter on a military base near the lumberjack village of Holberg. The soldiers and their families formed a close community and Doug had his best years there. When the base closed after the Cold War and the buildings and remains would be burned, Doug decided to save what he could save. He traveled further into the woods with trucks full of small structures, books, photographs and utensils, and started San Josef Heritage Park & ??Campground. Everywhere on his primitive camping you will find remains of the radar base. They would all contribute to the transfer of history. But the forest slowly takes back the open space and campers rarely come. Doug gets old, he is losing the battle against the elements.

Hades was a powerful god in classical Greek mythology. His Helmet of Darkness enabled him and the other gods to be invisible during their sometimes-ambiguous quests. Therefore, the helmet became proverbial for those who conceal their true nature. Digital platforms such as Uber, Amazon, Tinder and Airbnb, with their invisible Hades-esque algorithms, have drastically changed social structures and human behaviour   and not always for the better. They have given a completely new meaning to such concepts as work, employment, dating and tourism. The invasive nature of their algorithms is said to be largely derived from the extremely addictive mechanisms of the gaming industry and the classical pigeon-learning experiments performed last century by American psychologist B.F. Skinner. Jansen s intriguing fifth book offers a surprising critical artistic view of the downside of the digital platform economy. Jos Jansen is a visual artist whose work spans photography, film, data visualisation, writing and psychology. His chief concerns include learning to see where people s boundaries lie in relation to technology, science and nature. Do we still control technology or does technology control us?

"King Leopold II of Belgium was proclaimed the founder and sole owner of the Congo Free State in 1885. Convincing the colonial European nations to commit to common trade and improving the lives of native inhabitants, he meanwhile extracted a fortune from the territory through an administration marked by forced labour, torture, and murder. Oliver Leu presents an eclectic collection of visual research, a reflection on both the visible representations of colonialism in Belgium today and the hidden traces of its gruesome past. He portrays an ambitious ruler with delusions of grandeur, showing the influence the exploitation of Leopold's private colony still has on contemporary Belgium.".

Novogen is a project focusing on the eponymous breed of chickens that was developed in order to use its eggs in the production of pharmaceutical products such as medicines and vaccines. Through the investigation of the industrialised farming of the Novogen White Light chicken, Dániel Szalai (HU) intends to articulate questions and dilemmas regarding technology and man's relation to nature. The core of the book is formed by an extensive series of portraits of individual chickens besides photographs documenting the environment of the production facilities and the process of vaccine production. The images are supplemented by a reflective text by philosopher Fahim Amir, a selection of extracts from the management guide of the Novogen White Light and the marketing materials of the company that produces them. Besides posing questions about our understanding of the natural, Szalai believes that the way these chickens are 'conceptualised' can be a metaphor for human positions in the job market, or in the political domain.
