John Jacob Rhodes Jr. (September 18, 1916 August 24, 2003) was an American lawyer and politician. A member of the Republican Party, Rhodes served as a U.S. Representative from Arizona for thirty years from 1953 to 1983. He was the minority leader in the House of Representatives from 1973 to 1981 and pressed a conservative agenda. In 1976, Rhodes wrote, The Futile System: How to Unchain Congress and Make the System Work Again, which argued that effective Congressional reforms "cannot be accomplished by the majority party. The ins have little incentive to change. It is the outs -- the powerless minority -- who have the only real motivation to take a critical look at the system and determine a better way to run things." Rhodes retired from Congress in 1982. Still popular in his home district, Rhodes reasoned that "if [he were] ever going to do something else, [he] should get started doing it." His retirement opened the door to a Republican primary, which was won by John McCain. McCain went on to victory in November and would be elected to the Senate four years later. On August 14, 2003, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert awarded Rhodes one of the first Congressional Distinguished Service Medals. Rhodes, one of only a handful to obtain the award. A graduate of Harvard Law School, John retired from active military service after World War II as a lt. colonel and from the reserves as a full colonel. The first Republican Congressman ever elected by Arizona in 1952, he served for 30 years. In all, he served 15 consecutive terms, the longest House of Representatives tenure in Arizona's history. When Gerald Ford became Vice President in 1973, John succeeded him as House Minority Leader, a post he held for ten years. He chaired the Republican Platform Committee in 1972 and was the party's Permanent Convention Chairman in 1976 and again in 1980. Prior to his election to the top Republican Leadership post, he served for nine years as chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee. He is a former member of the Committees on Appropriations, Rules, Education and Labor, and Interior and Insular Affairs. He was permanent chairman of the Republican National Conventions in 1976 and 1980 and served as chairman of of the 1972 convention's Platform Committee. John is the author of The Futile System, a book about how the legislative process suffered during nearly 40 years of one-party control. With wartime gasoline rationing in effect, many suburban families could not drive to public libraries so she organized a large neighborhood collection of books to be shared. In this period, she also published a collection of children's poems titled, "Is This Tomorrow?" She was born in London and graduated from Reedman College. In 1935, she married Paul A. Shinkman who had been London bureau chief for the Chicago Tribune. In the early 1950s, she accompanied him on a Foreign Service assignment to Austria. After her husband's death she published a collection of his articles and drawings under the title "So Little Disillusion." About 10 years ago, she published her own memoirs, "The Most Estimable Place and Time." She was a collector of first editions of children's books . Kay Boyle (February 19, 1902 - December 27, 1992) was an American novelist, short story writer, educator, and political activist. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, in addition to her two O. Henry Awards, she received two Guggenheim Fellowships and in 1980 received the National Endowment for the Arts fellowship for "extraordinary contribution to American literature over a lifetime of creative work".
