Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Subscribers Edition with list of the 73 subscribers to the rear.Small 4to. pp192 + contents and preface pages complete with 4 colour plates, including frontis, only one with tissue guard. No dust jacket as issued. Limp red cloth binding with gilt titles to spine and gilt roebuck and hound to front board in very good condition with a little bumping to tips, rubbing to edges and sides of spine, and a little shelf wear to top & tail of spine. Inside a little foxing to end papers with all other pages and plates, with top edge gilt in excellent clean and bright condition in a tight, solid binding. There seems to be some debate about the real author with Robert Dunkin & Guy Hardwin Gallenga both being cited as "Snaffles"(Gallenga more recently). Hedging my bets I've put both. A lovely copy of a scarce book. Paul de Vos, W. P. Hodges, L. Kemp Welch (illustrator).…

Modern cloth. First edition. [8], 291, [5] pp. 8vo. Does not contain 'The Christians directory' (Wing L3145) which may have been issued separately in 1653. Christopher Love (1618-1651), clergyman, converted to evangelical Christianity in 1633 when he heard William Erbury preach. Later he was appointed chaplain to the regiment at Windsor Castle; but from 1646 on believed that heretics in the army were the greatest threat to Presbyterianism and so became a central figure in an attack on the republic. In 1649 Love became involved in a plot to return the exiled Charles II to the throne of England, for which act he was condemned to death and beheaded three years before this volume was printed. "The volumes of posthumously published sermons show that Love was an able preacher whose method was to apply Calvinist doctrine to both comfort and humble his flock before God," (DNB). This volume was the property of Rev. William De Loss Love, Jr, most probably of Hartford, CT. ESTCR202772. Wing (2nd ed.) L3149 (Variant?). A very good copy; rebound in cloth with new endpapers, faint institutional blind-stamp to title page, tiny deaccession stamp to rear endpaper, occasional faint dampstain or foxing, but quite clean.…

Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. A fascinating sammelband of the compleat works of Aristotle, including the twenty-eighth edition of an eighteenth century sex manual and midwifery guide. Not in fact written by Aristotle, this important midwifery work and early sex manual was a fiercely popular medical text consulted and reprinted throughout the eighteenth century. Although published anonymously by a Pseudo-Aristotle it is often considered to be the work of Doctor William Salmon. The work is comprised of:Aristotle's Compleat Master Piece, the twenty-eighth edition, dated 1764 (ESTC T191163). With a woodcut frontis and further vignette illustrations.Aristotle's Book of Problems, the twenty-sixth edition [1715] (ESTC T191162). With woodcut frontispiece.Aristotle's Compleat and Experienced Midwife, the twelfth edition [1770] (ESTC T203253). With woodcut frontispiece.Aristotle's Last Legacy, 1764 (ESTC T191225). With woodcut frontispiece.Collated, complete. Bound in full calf. Externally, very smart. With the odd mark to boards and minor rubbing to extremities. A small split to the upper front joint. Internally, firmly bound. Hinge lightly strained at first title page and at rear board. The odd crease or chip to fore edge. Light age toning. Minor worming through Aristotle's Last legacy and to rear paste down. Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). book.…

Modern white buckram, gilt-lettered morocco lettering-piece on the front cover (lightly soiled). MAGNIFICENTLY ATTENDED WITH THE DROOPING STATELINESSES OF PUBLIKE AND UNIVERSALL LAMENTATION" (page3). First edition and fine PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed "ex dono authoris" on the recto of the frontispiece. Robert Devereaux (1591-1646), 3rd Earl of Essex, is most famous for being the son of Elizabeth I's favourite, the 2nd Earl (1566-1601). However, he was also celebrated in his own right as an English Parliamentarian and successful soldier during the first half of the seventeenth century. With the start of the English Civil War in 1642 he became the first Captain-General and Chief Commander of the Parliamentarian army, also known as the Roundheads, with considerable achievements at the battles of Edgehill and Newbury, only finally being defeated at the battle of Lostwitheil in September of 1644, eventually resigning his commission shortly before his death in 1646. Richard Vines was a Puritan Divine from Leicestershire who from 1643 preached from the pulpit of St. Clement the Dane, of which Devereux was a parishioner. In addition to speaking at Devereux's funeral "on the morning of the execution of King Charles, he was one of the puritan divines who proffered religious services to the King." Devereux's death led to a large and extravagant display of mourning. Parliament contributed £5000 to the expenses of his funeral and he was buried in Westminster Abbey, where the chancel was draped in black from floor to ceiling and a funeral effigy of the earl dressed in scarlet breeches, a military buff-coat and Parliamentary robes was erected beneath a catafalque designed by Inigo Jones. This was left standing after the ceremony until a poor farmer from Dorset hacked it down on the grounds that an angel had told him to do so. The effigy was restored but Charles II ordered that it be taken down during the Restoration. This is the 38-page Roper edition: Wing lists a 32-page edition of the same date also printed for Roper (Wing V553), as well another 38-page "edition" printed for Henry Seile (Wing V554). Wing V554A.
