In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. First edition. THE HERMETIC MUSEUM RESTORED AND ENLARGED: MOST FAITHFULLY INSTRUCTING ALL DISCIPLES OF THE SOPHO-SPAGYRIC ART HOW THAT GREATEST AND TRUEST MEDICINE OF THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE MAY BE FOUND AND HELD. NOW FIRST DONE INTO ENGLISH FROM THE LATIN ORIGINAL PUBLISHED AT FRANKFORT IN THE YEAR 1678. Containing Twenty-two most celebrated Chemical Tracts. IN TWO VOLUMES. [Edward Arthur Waite] The Hermetic Museum. London: James Elliott and Co.: 1893. First edition, first issue. 2 volumes: [xii] 360; [viii] 324 pp. Illustrated. Variant binding, olive-green pebble-grained cloth. Striking bookplate of N. [Norbert] Hardy Wallis (1895-1980), a British translator, editor, writer, and scholar known primarily for his work on early English literature, particularly biblical translations and poetry. A fine set of the very scarce first edition. Gardner, 472; Gilbert, B7. Arthur Edward Waite's 1893 two-volume The Hermetic Museum, Restored and Enlarged is a landmark English translation and edition of the classic alchemical anthology Musaeum Hermeticum Reformatum et Amplificatum. First compiled in Latin in 1678 (building on an earlier 17th-century German collection), it gathers 22 influential alchemical tracts from the European tradition, many anonymous or pseudonymous, offering both practical "sophic" (philosophical) chemistry and densely allegorical/spiritual instructions on the search for the Philosopher's Stone. Waite, a prolific occult scholar and key figure in the late-Victorian/Edwardian esoteric revival (Golden Dawn, SRIA, etc.), translated, edited, and contextualized the texts with a preface that situates them within the broader Hermetic corpus. The set is prized for its original engravings (emblems, symbolic illustrations, and laboratory scenes) and for making these often-obscure works accessible to English readers at a time of renewed interest in alchemy as both proto-chemistry and spiritual allegory. From R. A. Gilbert's bibliography: 250 copies published in April, 1893 at £2 2s Od. An important collection of alchemical texts, first published in this form, in Latin, in 1678. The translation had been prepared previously for Lord Stafford by an unknown alchemical scholar; Waite edited the text and revised it. He was unable to identify the translator beyond discovering that it was not W. A. Ayton, the most obvious candidate. It is possible that this, and the other translations do for Stafford, were the work of Julius Kohn, a Theosophist, alchemical enthusiast and friend of Ayton who published an edition of Trismosin's Splendor Solis in 1921.…

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, in bright condition, of this uncommonly found allegorical children's fantasy. The work, set in the mythic land of Ravendale, features lightly disguised versions of Waite and his cohort. In "all his work Waite presented himself as a non-denominational mystic", here named "the Mystic", and depicted at page 95 (ODNB). Waite's wife, Ada, is represented as the dormouse, while her sister, and Waite's first and true love, Dora, is featured as the heroine, Mesuline. Waite first met Dora in 1886 and the two fell almost immediately in love; however, in June 1887 she married one Reverend Granville Stuart-Menteath. In January 1888, Waite in turn married her sister Ada. Dora and Waite remained close despite their marriages and the two families lived near one another in Gunnersbury. Stuart-Menteath's sister, Evelyn, was also a close friend of Waite's and provided the striking illustrations for this work and several of his others, and features in the text as the title dragon. The title is a play on the deuterocanonical narrative of Bel and the Dragon in the extended Book of Daniel. A. E. Waite (1857-1942) was a poet and historian of occultism who "brought order out of the chaos of the occult revival and enabled the study of both the history and content of 'rejected knowledge' to become academically acceptable" (ibid.). Alongside his academic studies Waite wrote several collections of fantastical poetry with the 1890s being his "most prolific decade with ten books, fifteen works edited or translated, and the first independent journal in this field, the Unknown World, to his credit" (ibid.). He is best known now for his pictorial tarot deck, designed in 1910 with fellow author and spiritualist Pamela Colman Smith. R. A. Gilbert, A. E. Waite: Magician of Many Parts, 1987. Quarto. Frontispiece, illustrated title page, and 36 illustrations in the text. Original dark green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, detailed fairy and spider's web illustration incorporating titles in silver to front cover, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, a couple of leaves unopened, plain endpapers. Minor rubbing to spine ends and board edges, slight bump to bottom tip of front board, faint browning to endleaves, very occasional ink smudges from printing process to margins; a very good, attractive copy, the illustrations clean and crisp. …
