Armorial bookplate of the Marquess of Headfort. George Monck Berkeley, 1763-1793, grandson of the philosopher George Berkeley. His biography of Swift contains an account of Swift's marriage by St George Ashe to Esther Johnson, his 'Stella'. Ashe 'himself related the circumstances to Bishop Berkeley, by whose relict the story was communicated to me'. Dr. Ashe cannot have told Bishop Berkeley by word of mouth, because Ashe died in 1717, the year after the supposed marriage, and Berkeley was then still abroad. But Berkeley was at the time tutor to Ashe's son, and may therefore have been informed by letter, though it is difficult to believe that Ashe would write about such a secret so soon after the event. Whether or not this marriage took place is still a matter of scholarly debate.…

Brookes" on inside front cover, overtop the evidence of the removal of an earlier bookplate. 547 pages. The page edges retain a bit of the original gilt. Text block good and tight. Pages with wide margins. A wide ranging view of the natural world, both scientific and philosophical. Concludes with an essay on the place of man in nature, ".it is apparent.there is a graduated scale or chain of existence, not of link of which, however seemingly insignificant, could be broken without affecting the whole." "In the chain of animals, man is unquestionably the chief." Volume 2 was published in 1799 by Bell & Bradfute and others. 515 pages. A study of the various theories of the divisions of animals into classes, both ancient and modern. Also focuses on the races of man, sleep and dreaming, raising Silkworms in Britain, the language of beasts and more. Like volume 1, this one suffers from a detached front cover, but remains tightly bound. A nice collection of late 18th century thinking about the natural world. Modern (1940) gift inscription on front pastedown. Two early owner names (T C Murdoch & F. M. Murdoch) inked opposite "Mary Cunningham" inked at top of title page. Yet another owner mark, "J.E." (presumed ownership initials) gilt on spine. Thumbed, page corners creased from readers, well used and passed from one owner to another. Boards. First published in 1773, this cookbook has gone through several revisions. In the advertisement for this edition, MacIver notes that friends suggested adding her ideas for menus suitable for various size groups. First Edition, folio (470 x 290 mm), [5], 6-60pp., 10 engraved plates (4 folding on 2 sheets joined) after A. Fyfe and Thomas Donaldson, plates II and III with short tears not touching the image, plate V a little creased with short closed tears, nineteenth-century half calf, rubbed, covers detached. This was "The first serious study of this subject and the most original anatomical work by the greatest of the Monro dynasty." It contains the first full anatomical description of the sacs between the tendons and bones which Albinus had named the bursae mucosae. They are illustrated on the ten plates "which for explicit clarity and accuracy have not been improved upon." (Heirs of Hippocrates 1011). The plates depict the foot, various joints including the knee and hip, and four of the plates are life-sized representations of the entire arm and leg. Monro secundus' earlier publications were largely polemical, and it was not until he had been teaching for twenty-five years that his three main contributions to medical literature appeared. Monro's Observations on the Structure and Functions of the Nervous System (Edinburgh, 1783), a massive text and atlas on human and comparative neurology, is Monro's greatest work. His Description of All the Bursae Mucosae of the Human Body. was a practical manual for direct use in surgery. Although next to nothing was known of germ life at that time, Monro's acute observation and independent empirical judgement led him to the conclusion that the chief danger of infection in surgery of joints lay in exposure to the air. The preface is by George Gleig (1753-1840) which is "not devoid of interest.
