George Monck Berkeley, 1763-1793, grandson of the philosopher George Berkeley. His biograph…y of Swift contains an account of Swift's marriage by St George Ashe to Esther Johnson, his 'Stella'. Ashe 'himself related the circumstances to Bishop Berkeley, by whose relict the story was communicated to me'. Dr. Ashe cannot have told Bishop Berkeley by word of mouth, because Ashe died in 1717, the year after the supposed marriage, and Berkeley was then still abroad. But Berkeley was at the time tutor to Ashe's son, and may therefore have been informed by letter, though it is difficult to believe that Ashe would write about such a secret so soon after the event. Whether or not this marriage took place is still a matter of scholarly debate.

Pages with wide margins. A wide ranging view of the natural world, both scientific and philosophical. Concludes with an essay on the place of man in nature, ".it is apparent.there is a graduated scale or chain of existence, not of link of which, however seemingly insignificant, could be broken without affecting the whole." "In the chain of animals, man is unquestionably the chief." Volume 2 was published in 1799 by Bell & Bradfute and others. 515 pages. A study of the various theories of the divisions of animals into classes, both ancient and modern. Also focuses on the races of man, sleep and dreaming, raising Silkworms in Britain, the language of beasts and more. Like volume 1, this one suffers from a detached front cover, but remains tightly bound. A nice collection of late 18th century thinking about the natural world. A second volume was published in 1799, four years after Smellie's death from stomach can…cer, no doubt exacerbated by his almost nightly attendance at the local Oyster Bar and Ale House situated downstairs from Smallie's printing establishment. Willim Smellie (1740-1795) was a Scottish polymath and master printer who from an early age exhibited a prodigious and sharp intellect and curiosity about topics ranging from Botany to Psychology to Political Justice and Reform. ".As an intellectual, Smellie courted controversy by defying systems and authorities: he contradicted Linnaeus on the sexuality of plants, proposed that human reason was only an extension of the instincts common to all animals, promoted an early psychology of dreams, and made natural history accessible to women. Smellie's reputation as a natural historian was such that Charles Elliot paid £1000 for the copyright to volume one of Smellie's Philosophy of Natural History, which appeared in 1790, shortly after Elliot's death.Still, it was conviviality not politics which derailed Smellie's ambitions and shortened his life. He enjoyed the tavern scene, spending most evenings in oyster bars and ale houses. His frequent haunt was Douglas's tavern in the Anchor Close, where Smellie kept his printing house and his lodgings. There Smellie founded the Crochallan Fencibles, a drinking club immortalized in the verse of his close friend and political ally Robert Burns, whose obscene Merry Muses of Caledonia was written for the club and printed by Alexander Smellie (1800). When Smellie died of stomach cancer in 1795, his printing firm was nearly insolvent, rescued only by £395 from Elliot's estate. Smellie was buried in Greyfriars kirkyard, Edinburgh. He was survived by nine of his thirteen children.".

He dedicates the book to Arthur Murphy and devotes his introduction to attacking almost every aspect of Sir John Haw…kins's biography, and the edition of Johnson's works which he supervised: 'For these, as well as his own mistakes, Sir John Hawkins alone is answerable. Had not he thrust himself into an office which he is so little qualified to fill, and claimed it by an engagement so sacred as to keep others at a distance, there would surely have been found among Johnson's friends some guardian of his fame equal to the task of doing justice to his character' (pp. 5-6). Gleig is also dismissive of the 1735 edition, for the 'blunders of the printer', which are 'uncommonly numerous'. Fleeman 35.2LV/2; Courtney & Nichol Smith pp. 3-4; Chapman & Hazen p. 165. This edition was intended to be a supplementary fifteenth volume to the Hawkins edition, following on from Stockdale's two-volume edition of the Parliamentary Debates (1787); but as with most copies, the half title stating this is no longer present. The book was almost certainly sold as a separate work at the time, and that prefatory leaf cancelled.

This was "The first serious s…tudy of this subject and the most original anatomical work by the greatest of the Monro dynasty." It contains the first full anatomical description of the sacs between the tendons and bones which Albinus had named the bursae mucosae. They are illustrated on the ten plates "which for explicit clarity and accuracy have not been improved upon." (Heirs of Hippocrates 1011). The plates depict the foot, various joints including the knee and hip, and four of the plates are life-sized representations of the entire arm and leg. Monro secundus' earlier publications were largely polemical, and it was not until he had been teaching for twenty-five years that his three main contributions to medical literature appeared. Monro's Observations on the Structure and Functions of the Nervous System (Edinburgh, 1783), a massive text and atlas on human and comparative neurology, is Monro's greatest work. His Description of All the Bursae Mucosae of the Human Body. was a practical manual for direct use in surgery. Although next to nothing was known of germ life at that time, Monro's acute observation and independent empirical judgement led him to the conclusion that the chief danger of infection in surgery of joints lay in exposure to the air.
