Substantial fraying to first gathering of I, a bit less to second, to last leaf of IV, and to handful more ll., with some loss, light water stain to upper outer corner throughout, heavier to last work, a few ll. soiled, textblock starting (half a dozen ll. detached), ink burn to V2 of IV, affecting a few words. Well-preserved in c.1700 Scottish calf, traces of clasps, double blind ruled, blind-stamped fleurons and TM (likely Thomas Milne) to covers, flat spine, worm loss to edges and foot of spine. A very rare survival a sammelband of four C16 English medical works, three in the first edition. Rebound in the early C18, most probably in Scotland, the book was still being used as a reference work by a series of (likely related) C18 physicians: Thomas, John, and James Milne. In 1712-14, Thomas appears to have had this sammelband bound or rebound, with some works in already incomplete copies, and added blanks for annotations. It is also possible that he deliberately discarded parts which were not relevant to study or practice. He created a table of contents for Cartwright s work, and filled several blanks with recipes drawn from books of secrets: to drain a swollen leg, treat the gut, etc. Most interesting is the section on how to become invisible , using heliotropium and a laurel leaf enclosed in a wolf s tooth. Thomas hand alternates with that of James Milne, who copied other remedies. A hospitall of the diseased is attributed to Thomas Cartwright (1535-1603), one of the leading Puritan preachers and master of Warwick s Lord Leycester hospital from 1585. The preface, signed T.C., urges sick people to delay no time, but with a final price buy a gem worth gold (this book, I mean) . This pocket manual is made of dozens of short sections, each devoted to a remedy: e.g., against the plague, ague, scalding, eye conditions, toothache. The (here fragmentary) Short discours [.] uppon chirurgerie comprises translations of extracts from several different works of the Bolognese physician Fioravanti (Durling). It touches on a great variety of subjects, e.g., remedies for insomnia, jaundice, palsy and dropsy. The translator, John Hester (d.1593) contributed to the circulation of Paracelsian medicine in England. A right profitable booke was written by Peter Levens (1552-87), a lexicographer trained at Oxford, and a student of Phisicke and Surgery . Structured as a book of secrets, it comprises dozens of short recipes for remedies head-to-foot, e.g., against headache, nose-bleeding, chipping of the lips, bleeding gums, blood in urine, incontinence, sweeling of the knees. The garden of health by the obscure William Langham is an alphabetic dictionary of the most important common medical herbs and plants, with their virtues, and with recipes and quantities to be used according to the ailment. In common with other directories published by White and Baines, the maps and tables, although stated on the title pages, were too bulky to insert in the small 8vo. volumes, so were issued separately either in boards, or, as here, in wrappers. They rarely survive together. Over 40 years I have had the Yorkshire and Lancashire separately printed maps and plans a handful of times, but this is the first copy of the Durham and Northumberland volumes which I have seen. Among Markham's many published works on equestrian subjects, Cavalarice is no doubt the most comprehensive and substantial. Likely written during his agricultural exile in the aftermath of Essex's execution in 1601 and first published in 1607, the work divides the knowledge of horses into eight books, among them breeding, training, stabling, and farriery, as well as books on hunting- and racing-horses. Of these the first and second books, on breeding and training respectively, are most extensive, and proved particularly influential in dismissing superstitions of earlier authors and rejecting the crueller practices suggested by Italian writers on horsemanship. Markham's Cavalarice remained popular throughout the seventeenth century, and his work on farriery, Markham's Maister-Peece (1610), was revised and reprinted well into the nineteenth. These works undoubtedly owed much of their success to his clear style, extensive experience, and scholarship. Markham's career is far broader, however, than might be suggested by the numerous works on horsemanship. He is known to have lived as a farmer for several years after the fall of his patron the Earl of Essex, to have seen military service in the Netherlands, and to have published poetry, prose, and plays with some success. For his final venture, tried to raise funds by walking from London to Berwick without bridges, nor 'boats, Shippe, or other Ingin for water more than an ordinarye Leape staffe or staffe to leape with all neither shoulde swyme any water whatsoever' (ODNB). Provenance: The present copy is inscribed by the noted antiquary John Marsham (16021685). BOO observes that, although Marsham's will does not mention any books, there are two early bookplates attributed to him (cf.Franks and Lee), 'one of which was also used as an engraving in a book of 1649'. We note one other book with his inscription, dated 1647, presented to him by John Donne Jr, which appeared at auction (Christies, 3 March 2004, lot 27). [Full collation available.] Bound in later (XVIIc?) paneled speckled calf. On the spine, five raised bands. Title gilt to the second panel. Blind roll to the edges of the boards. All edges of the text-block speckled red. Headpiece and fore-corners strengthened. Surface-cracking at the hinges, with some erosion to the boards (perhaps from moisture). Upper front fore-corner worn. Paste-downs renewed. Mildly evenly tanned throughout. Signs of damp to the lower margin through quire E, most pronounced to the title-leaf. Marginal ink-stain to L3-7. Paper flaws to H4 (marginal) and to M4 (about five lines high, two to three words across). Lacking the final blank. Armorial bookplate of Edward William Harcourt with a graphite shelf-mark to the front paste-down. Juan Gonzáles de Mendoza (1545-1618) was an Augustinian friar who, despite the subject of the present work, never went to China. He was, rather, appointed Bishop of Chiapas (Mexico, 1607) and then of Popayán (Colombia, 1608) -- and so might rather have become a scholar of the Americas. Indeed, the final part of the work does discuss the Caribbean and Mexico at some length, so much so that Ortelius crowns the present work the most informative in the preparation of his own atlas. In the end it was not the Augustinians but the Jesuits who made the greatest Western inroads to China, such that the opening decades of the XVIIc would see a surge in Chinese interest fueled by the publications of Matteo Ricci most of all. Yet for the curious Elizabethans, Parke's translation of the work (first published in 1585 in Spanish) -- made at the behest of Richard Hakluyt, who published a compendium of explorations (the Principall Navigations of 1589) -- was the largest window onto the kingdom of whose fifteen provinces Gonzales writes "every one of them is bigger then [sic] the greatest kingdome that we doo understand to be in all Europe" (p. 13). The second part (in two "bookes," pp. 136-237 and 238-304) expands the geographic remit with Spanish voyages to the Philippines. For all the accusations that the text is fundamentally derivative, it is still of considerable note for being the first to print, with western type, Chinese characters (pp. 92 & 93). The third part, drawn as it is from personal experience or at least personal research in "New Spain," has a more compelling authority. His description of Mexico City as a sort of Venetian Eden (p. 317) is particularly alluring. The Augustinians, like -- albeit to a lesser degree than -- the Jesuits, had a strong network of sources in the region that allowed for a comprehensive study of the region's topography, nature and people. As such, the volume is as much an important work of Elizabethan Americana (Sabin writes that it is "so rare that we have never seen it") as it is of Sinica. The volume was in the vast library (noted on p. 211 (sub Parke) of the 1883 catalogue) of Edward William Vernon Harcourt (1825-1891) of Nuneham House in Nuneham Courtenay in Oxfordshire. Harcourt was an MP from 1878-1885 for Oxforshire and then for Henley. His library shows him to be a passionate naturalist and Orientalist; he owned in addition to this English edition two Italian editions of the work. The work is indeed rare; it has come to auction only seven times in this century (commanding prices as high as $216,600!) and only 37 examples are recorded on OCLC. First and last few pages chapped at edges with some loss, creased and lightly soiled; page edges thumbed throughout with occasional small chips at edges and a couple of closed tears. Previous owner's stamp on first leaf. The Book of Common Prayer, 1771, has a portrait engraving of George I and an extra title page with engraving, plus a further 41 wood-engraved illustrations. They are highly stylised and we can find no record of these illustrations, all other referenced copies of 1771 having different ones. Illustrations include those of Guy Fawkes torching Parliament; the martyrdom of Charles I and the Restoration of Charles II, accompanying the additional services. The Companion to the Altar has a single engraving, engraved and printed only for John Beecroft by Act of Parliament, 1763. The Whole Book of Psalms is dated 1768. Overall a very nice copy of this work important in the development of the Anglican liturgy, showing wear consistent with prolonged use, and with interesting illustrations making it distinct. Marocco was able to walk on two and three legs, play dead, was able to distinguish between colours, and pull out particular audience member on Bankes' commands. He was also trained to bow to Queen Elizabeth I. He and Bankes were two of the most popular entertainers of London.The second edition of this very important work. Pages are lightly age-toned, some leaves are more heavily age-toned, and generally clean with some scattered spots and scattered handling marks. The eight cartouches are a little trimmed to the fore edges, close cropping affecting the image of the cartouches for Books 4 and 6, though not affecting the images a large amount. Central text panel of the engraved title page has been tipped in with a little heavier age-toned paper to the rest of the title page, however the original title page does not appear to have any loss to this panel, so it's unclear why it was tipped in. Second edition of an important manual of riding, breeding, hunting, farriery and veterinary matters, by one of the earliest western owners of, and dealers in, Arabian horses: the English writer and poet Gervase Markham (1568-1637). Markham praises the virtues of Turkish and Barb horses in particular: "They are to be knowne before all horses by the finenesse of their proportions, especially their heades and necks, which nature hath so well shap'd, and plac'd, that they commonly save art his greatest labour: they are swift beyond other forraigne horses, and to that use in England we only imploy them [.]". Besides the breeding of these horses, Markham gives information on saddles and bits, etc., as well as numerous cures for horse ailments.With bookblate and several owner's inscriptions.
