In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Reads Édouard Glissant as an ethical theorist What do we in the West owe those who grow our food, sew our clothes and produce our electronics And what have we always owed one another, but forgotten, avoided, or simply disregarded Looking back on nearly a century of colonial war and genocide, in 1990 the poet and philosopher Édouard Glissant appealed directly to his readers, calling them to re-orient their lives in service of the political struggles of their time: 'You must choose your bearing'. Informed by the prayer camps at Standing Rock, and presenting Glissant alongside Stuart Hall, Emmanuel Levinas, Simone Weil, Enrique Dussel, Gloria Anzaldúa and W. E. B. Du Bois, this book offers an urgent ethics for the present - an ethics of risk, commitment and care that together form a new sense of decolonial responsibility. Benjamin P. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Italian cinema experienced its peak of domestic and international popularity in the years between the 'economic miracle' of the late 1950s and the social and political turmoil of the 1970s. But how did the growing development of the feminist movement in this period impact on Italian film culture And what role did that film culture play in women's lives This book explores the multiple intersections between feminism and Italian cinema from the perspective of women's everyday relationship with the medium. Drawing from a feminist approach to Gramscian cultural theory, the book builds an archival counter-history of Italian cinema in which women took part as movie-goers, activists and practitioners, by means of a collective-historical agency that challenged cinema's patriarchal structures and strategies of invisibilisation. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A critical analysis of struggles for accountability and the resurgence of militarism in Brazil Politics of Impunity investigates the failure of the anti-impunity agenda in Brazil, from the release of the truth commission report denouncing the crimes of the military regime (1964-1985) in 2014, to the election of the former-paratrooper and far-Right leader Jair Bolsonaro in 2018. Connecting debates on critical military studies, transitional justice and memory studies, the book moves beyond the conditions of implementation of accountability measures. It examines the conditions of possibility of the global anti-impunity agenda: when, how and why the question of impunity came to dominate debates on large-scale political violence. Drawing lessons from the Brazilian case, the book provides a new reading of transitional justice, investigating alternative ways of understanding militarism in the absence of warfare. It reveals the ways in which narratives of accountability and the memory of militarism work to demarcate and restrict what counts as unacceptable violence, who counts as victims/perpetrators and what counts as reasonable forms of justice and resistance. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'This book represents a valuable contribution to the study of the Bahai faith and the Ahmadiyya movement, as well as a detailed analysis of minority movements' adoption of the coloniser's discourse on modernity and Islam.' Reza Zia-Ebrahimi, King's College London An innovative analysis of modernity and Orientalist discourses in Iranian millenarian movements Religion, Orientalism and Modernity explores the emergence in Iran of the revolutionary Babis and reformist Baha'is and their conflict with mainstream Shi'a Muslims, and of the parallel Ahmadi movement in North India. It gives fresh insights into the writings that defined these innovatory movements, penned on the one hand by their proponents, and on the other by western interpreters. Comparison of these movements shows that, together, they define important aspects of Islamic modernity. A focus on two case studies (Babis and Baha'is in Iran, and Ahmadis in India) reveals similarities and differences in their responses to a perceived need for change and renewal of religious authority. Key Features ? Employs historical and discourse analysis to probe the conflict between orthodox and heterodox religious movements in 19th- and 20th-century Iran ? Links the conflict between orthodoxy and heterodoxy to the impact of modernity on Iran's society and religion and to colonisation on India's Muslims ? Broadens the scope of this conflict to include Palestine, Central Asia and Turkey ? Presents a postcolonial analysis of the new movements and their broader relationship to the Islamic world during the age of imperialism Geoffrey Nash is an independent scholar who has taught in universities in Africa, the Middle East, India and the UK, and was until recently Research Associate at the School of Oriental and African Studies. This book examines the ideals, institutions and processes that shape the development of a concrete Muslim-based democratic system - a form of democracy that recognises the centrality of religion in Muslim societies. Questioning the customary characterisations of Islam's compatibility with democracy, the book adopts a comparative political theory approach that initiates a dialogue between Muslim and Western political thought. It systematically studies debates concerning Muslim political thought, multiculturalism, secularism, the public sphere and constitutionalism, which enables an exploration of Muslim democracy through a political theory approach, rather than a theological one. Key Features - Constructs a Muslim democracy framework, inspired by Muslim and Western multiculturalist political thought - Provides an inclusive typology of Muslim political thought to discover essential norms for democratic thinking - Provides an inclusive typology of multiculturalism elaborating upon its capacity to reconcile democracy with religion - Synthesises these theoretical concepts and values to provide interpretative tools for a comparative political of Muslim democracy - Offers a scholarly construction of the notion of a political theory of Muslim democracy Ravza Altuntas-Çakir is a Lecturer in the Political Science and International Relations Department, Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University.

Neuware - Investigates the Alevis' struggles for recognition in Turkey and the diaspora and transformations in authority and traditional rituals This book explores the struggles of a minority group - Alevis - for recognition and representation in Turkey and the diaspora. It examines how they mobilise against state practices and claim their rights, while at the same time negotiating how they define themselves. The authors offers a conceptual framework to study minorities by looking at both structural and agency-related factors in resisting state pressure and mobilising for their rights. The Alevis in Modern Turkey and the Diaspora is divided into three main sections looking into: the Turkish state and society's pressures over Alevis; how Alevis struggle and obtain representation in various Western countries; and how traditional authority and rituals transform under these conditions. Studying this minority group's experience helps to understand oppression and resistance in the broader Middle East. Key Features ? 14 detailed case studies provide insights into the struggles for recognition and representation by Alevi communities in Turkey and the diaspora under the AKP administration ? Demonstrates how the struggles for recognition transform and re-define traditions, authorities and rituals ? Examines how diverse understandings of Alevi identities interplay with standardised representations of Alevism ? Neuware - Explores the revival and impact of evangelicalism within the Church of Scotland after the Disruption of 1843 The Revival of Evangelicalism presents a critical analysis of the evangelical movement in the national Church. It emphasises the manner in which the movement both continued along certain pre-Disruption lines and evolved to represent a broader spectrum of Reformed Presbyterian doctrine and piety during the long reign of Queen Victoria. The author interweaves biographical case studies of influential figures who played key roles in the process of revival and recovery, including William Muir, Norman MacLeod and A. H. Charteris. Based on a diverse range of primary sources, the book places the chronological development of 'established evangelicalism' within the broader context of British imperialism, German biblical criticism, European Romanticism and Victorian print culture. The author focuses on these Irish populations as they grew alongside their cities establishing the cultural and political institutions of Melbourne and Chicago, and these comparisons allow scholars to explore what happens when an ethnic group - so often considered 'other' - have a foundational role in a city instead of entering a society with established hierarchies. Forging Identities in the Irish World places women and children alongside men to explore the varied influences on migrant identity and community life. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A local history of Presbyterianism as the new governance of the Church of Scotland In 1690, the Church of Scotland rejected episcopal authority and settled as Presbyterian. The adjacent Presbyteries of Stirling and Dunblane covered an area that included both lowland and highland communities, speaking both English and Gaelic and supporting both the new government and the old - thus forming a representative picture of the nation as a whole. This book examines the ways in which the two Presbyteries operated administratively, theologically and geographically under the new regime. By surveying and analysing surviving church records from 1687 to 1710 at Presbytery and parish level, Muirhead shows how the two Presbyteries related to civil authorities, how they dealt with problematic discipline cases referred by the Kirk Sessions, their involvement in the Union negotiations and their overall functioning as human, as well as religious, institution in seventeenth-century Scotland. The resulting study advances our understanding of the profound impact that Presbyteries had on those involved with them in any capacity. Key features - Examines church and civil records available in Stirling Archives and the National Records of Scotland, as well as memoirs, letters and diaries - Describes the new Presbyterian regime and the circumstances of its replacement of Episcopal rule. - Provides statistical analysis of the recruitment and experiences of new ministers, their relationships with each other and heritors - Considers the survival of support for the episcopal regime locally - Gives an in-depth examination of local responses to the controversy leading up to the Act of Union Andrew T. Neuware - Rethinking objectivity and fiction in contemporary philosophy and psychoanalysis - beyond the realism-nominalism divide When it comes to the question of objectivity in current philosophical debates, there is a growing prominence of two opposite approaches: nominalism and realism. By absolutising intersubjectivity, the nominalist approach is moving towards the abandonment of the very notion of truth and objective reality. For its part, the realist approach insists on the category of the object-in-itself as irreducible to any kind of subjective mediation. Despite their seeming mutual exclusiveness, both approaches share a fundamental presupposition, namely, that of a neat separation between the spheres of subjectivity and objectivity as well as between fiction and truth. This collection offers a rethinking of the relationship between objectivity and fiction through engaging with a series of 'objective fictions', including such topics as fetishes, semblances, lies, rumours, sophistry, fantasies and conspiracy theories. It does so through engagement with modern and contemporary philosophical traditions and psychoanalytic theory, with all of these orientations being irreducible to either nominalist or realist approaches. Neuware - From the new man to the metrosexual, British society from the 1990s to the 2000s was pre-occupied with questions about masculinity, and more specifically with the idea that it was somehow 'in crisis.' The first book-length study of British cinematic representations of masculinity in this period, this fascinating study offers a feminist analysis of key tropes in this era, including the New Lad, fatherhood and masculine violence. Positioning these representations within the specific context of British manifestations of postfeminism and neoliberalism, the book explores the shifting representations of masculinity in popular British cinema and offers a detailed analysis of important recent developments in gender culture. With case studies of films like Brassed Off (1996), The Full Monty (1997), Trainspotting (1996) and About a Boy (2002), this book is a fascinating insight into an understudied period of British cinema and culture. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Throughout the last century, movies about infectious diseases have reflected and driven dominant cultural narratives. As the projected impact of disease has grown exponentially, these movies have increasingly shifted focus from trying to identify the source of a disease and potentially stopping it, to a dystopian, post-pandemic world in which nobody is safe and humans simply try to survive. Diseased Cinema explores how this narrative mirrors and shapes two thematic transformations. Firstly, the narrative change demonstrates how America has shifted from a belief in solving social problems to despair and acceptance of America's failure to fulfil its social contract. Secondly, this altered narrative reflects a development of capitalism which has spread globally with entrenched American ideas about individualism at the expense of the public good. As capitalism becomes more ubiquitous through newly developed technologies and global trade, movies gradually flatten individual differences or advocate for a complete destruction of the present world ostensibly to offer humanity a fresh start. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A new history of medieval Islamic political thought, focusing on the rule of law, limited government and the theory of delegation Political Thought in the Mamluk Period covers the political thought produced by legal theorists, jurists, judges and administrators of the late Ayyubid and early Mamluk period as they tackled a central question: how best to govern their communities. It proposes a taxonomy of the main themes and concerns of this political thought under the three ideals of the rule of law, limited government and legitimate delegation of power. Further, it recommends a contextualist approach for interpreting Islamic political texts based on their narrow social, intellectual and political contexts. Examining treatises by 5 carefully selected authors who flourished in the Syro-Egyptian lands in the period between c.1250 and c.1350, the book also deals with important questions of authorship, readership and dedicatees, authorial motives and intentions, genres and literary styles, sources and influences, and applicability. Key Features ? Studies Ayyubid and Mamluk political thought beyond the prevalent focus on Ibn Taymiyya ? Offers a novel classification of the themes and concerns of medieval Islamic political thought ? Provides a comprehensive study of Ibn Jama?a's well-known works and other previously unstudied treatises ? In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - How mass migration and a refugee crisis transformed Armenian culture in the 17th-century Ottoman Empire At the turn of the 17th century, the historical Armenian population centres in Eastern Anatolia and the Caucasus were ravaged by war with Persia, rebellion, famine and economic collapse. This instability caused mass migrations towards secure territories in Western Anatolia, Istanbul and Thrace, migrations which catalysed a renaissance of Armenian literary and cultural life in the Ottoman capital. This book traces the emergence, experiences and cultural and literary production of Armenian communities in and around Istanbul and the western provinces of the Ottoman Empire in the early modern period. Using both Ottoman Turkish and little-known Armenian sources, Henry Shapiro provides a systematic study of the Armenian population movements that resulted in the cosmopolitan remaking of Istanbul - and the birth of the Western Armenian diaspora. It builds on a rich body of work employing comparative approaches towards the 'Land Question' and the history of landed estates, drawing together fresh and original case studies which contextualise the historiographies of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. The contributors draw out similarities but also highlight the distinctive nature of land issues and reform programmes across the four nations of the British and Irish Isles. Neuware - Explores the making of the historian who transformed Scottish history and the nation's understanding of its past Providing a reassessment of John Hill Burton, a significant figure in 19th-century Scottish thought, this book presents a revision of the predominant historiographic interpretation of nineteenth-century Scotland. It traces Burton's remarkably diverse social and intellectual acquaintance, and equally varied literary endeavours, from his early life and education in 1820s Aberdeen to his increasingly prominent profile in the Edinburgh of Scott, Jeffrey and Cockburn. A detailed assessment of Burton's History of Scotland (1873) uncovers major themes which are then related to his formative experiences in the social and cultural world of his time. This analysis - and an examination of the enthusiastic reception of the work at home and abroad - overturn orthodox assumptions of the 'death' of Scottish history in the 19th century. Neuware - Focusing on the crossroads in the early modern period, this book deals with the literature and history of the physical crossroads: its magical and religious encounters, rituals of transformation, binding of undesirable spirits, siting of gallows, associations with music and links to ancient cosmology. Physical crossroads have been culturally vital sites where forces human, demonic and divine were felt to converge. Crossroads have seemed to render the boundaries between these spheres negotiable, subject to certain artifice and timing. They gave access to gods and facilitated deals with devils, they were potent sites for rituals intended to influence lovers or harm enemies and provided both a dramatic stage for communal activities and a burial ground for the unwanted dead cast out in ceremonies of the night. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Explores the role of laughter in constructing, preserving, and transforming contemporary social and political life Politics today is awash with laughter. From the late-night liberal satire machine to the insult comedy of Donald Trump, from comedians winning elected office to religious militants murdering cartoonists: laughter is a key source, object, and means of political discourse and action. In this age of hilarity, the traditional philosophical question of whether laughter should play a role in politics is increasingly obsolete and a focus on how laughter operates politically is needed instead. Laughter as Politics turns to the accounts of laughter offered by Thomas Hobbes, Theodor Adorno, Ralph Ellison, and feminist and queer thinkers like Hélène Cixous and Judith Butler to develop a critical theory of laughter that illuminates laughter as a privileged site wherein the contemporary social order constructs, preserves, and transforms itself politically. This book finds that laughter's outsized presence in the current moment - so much laughter in such dark times - reflects the multiplicity of fascistic dangers and democratic opportunities that this moment affords. In den WarenkorbTaschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - George A. Romero is recognised as one of the most culturally significant horror auteurs in American cinema. From his debut Night of the Living Dead onwards, he demonstrated a commitment to politically challenging low-budget genre cinema, gaining fan adoration and critical esteem. Romero's cult status may be assured, but the activities of the Pittsburgh-based production company that facilitated a substantial part of his output have largely been untold. George A. Romero's Independent Cinema is the first in-depth analysis of Romero's Laurel Entertainment, revealing the decision-making and business planning that takes place away from Hollywood, while offering an industry-determined analysis of such films as his zombie masterpiece Dawn of the Dead and the seldom-discussed Martin and Knightriders. Tracking Laurel Entertainment across four decades, this book draws upon business and economic studies to critically recast historical developments in the American independent film sector, providing a forensic-level insight into a media production company whose output redefined horror cinema. Tom Fallows is a lecturer at University of Maryland Global Campus. He completed his PhD in film studies at the University of Exeter and is a BAAS award winner.
