Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Silicon Valley corporations such as Facebook, Google, and Apple now dominate our daily lives to the extent that they might even be dictating the entire future of humanity. The 2010s saw a sequence of Hollywood films debate how these corporations achieved this position of dominance. This sequence included biopics of key Silicon Valley figures Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs, science fiction action extravaganzas like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Venom, and Terminator: Genisys, the dystopian thriller The Circle, and extended to The Internship and Why Him , whimsical comedies that warned us of the profound dangers of Silicon Valley capitalism. Silicon Valley Cinema argues that these films undercut the messianic pretensions of our Silicon Valley overlords and encourage us to end our immersion in Silicon Valley's technotopia. Releasing ourselves from Silicon Valley's grip, they suggest, will make our working lives more pleasurable, our world a better place, and might even avert a cataclysmic war with genetically enhanced apes or a robot-led apocalypse. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Reconsidering the ancient world through the lens of New Materialism From archaeological sites to papyri and manuscripts, we experience the ancient world through its material remains. This materiality may be tangible: from vases to votive offerings and statues to spearheads. It might be the text as object or the object in the text. The New Materialisms have transformed the way we conceive of the material world - but how and to what extent - might they be applied to ancient cultures Books in this series will showcase the potential applications of New Materialism within Classics, giving us a new way to look at ancient texts, ancient objects and ancient world-views.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Examines the mythology of the peacekeeper and how it functions to sustain militarism in global politics The peacekeeper - impartial, disciplined, helpful and restrained in their lethal capacity - is a powerful trope. This book examines the mythology of international peacekeeping, using Canada as a case study to explore how the peacekeeping myth both challenged and condoned combat activities in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2014. While Afghanistan was explicitly not a peacekeeping mission, peacekeeping mythology circulated throughout discourse about the War. Introducing a novel framework k- martial peace - Nicole Wegner offers an in-depth examination of the Canadian Armed Forces missions to Afghanistan and the use of police violence against Indigenous protests in Canada as case examples where military violence has been justified in the name of peace. In doing so, she reveals how gender, militarism and nationalism operated in political discourse to justify military force and violence in the name of peace. Martialling Peace critically investigates the peacekeeper myth and challenges academic, government and popular beliefs that martial violence is required to sustain peace. Nicole Wegner is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Gender and War at the University of Sydney, Australia.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Examines how mechanisms of change and conversions harrowed and transformed early modern people and their worlds Conversion machines are apparatuses, artfully-fashioned preparations, arrangements and things that demonstrate processes of change. They are paradoxical - at once intent on verifying what was invisible, uncertain and even unknowable, while also acting as sowers of dissimulation. This study does not seek to mechanise conversion. In many ways, conversion and the transformation of the convert will remain ineffable. Instead, this collection maintains that conversion of all kinds must unfold in ecologies that include politics, law, religious practice, the arts and the material and corporeal realms. Shifting the focus from subjectivity toward the operations of governments, institutions, artifices and the body, contributors consider how early modern Europeans suffered under the mechanisms of conversion, how they were sometimes able to realise themselves by dint of being caught up in the machinery of sovereignty, how they invented scores of new, purpose-built conversional instruments and how they experienced forms of radical transformation in their own bodies. Carter Chair in European Art and the Director of the Center for 17th- and 18th-Century Studies at William Andrews Clark Memorial Library. Paul Yachnin is Tomlinson Professor of Shakespeare Studies at McGill University. From 2013-19, he directed the Early Modern Conversions Project.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The first scholarly edition of Tea-Table Miscellany, a seminal collection in defining eighteenth-century Scottish song. This edition of The Tea-Table Miscellany brings together the four volumes of the collection of songs published between 1723 and 1737. The Tea-Table Miscellany combines traditional Scottish song and works by Allan Ramsay and his contemporaries with material from D'Urfey, Playford and the English stage and broadside in a collection of 399 songs. For the first time, annotations, background and a study of the origins of all the songs and tunes are compiled, examining both Ramsay's categorisation of the authorship and origin of the song texts and tunes to which it was most likely he was referring. This scholarly edition includes: - A detailed introduction - Clearly presented song texts and notes on the songs that identify both their print and musical antecedents - Musical illustrations that show major variations in the contemporary tunes with which the songs are associated - Illustrations of the title pages, and the main design features and ornaments used in Ruddiman's original edition Murray Pittock MAE FRSE is Bradley Professor and Pro Vice-Principal at the University of Glasgow, and Scotland's leading cultural historian. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Explores modernism's complex relationship with contemporary theatre. This volume highlights modernism as an impulse that can be carried forward to the present, re-embodied and re-encountered in theatrical performance. It demonstrates how modernist impulses spark contemporary theatre in dynamic ways, continuing the modernist imperative to 'make it new' and to engage meaningfully with the complicated situation of living in the contemporary world. A diverse set of contributions from scholars and theatre practitioners examines the legacy of modernism on the world stage in acts of remembrance, restaging, transmission and slippage. It investigates both well-known and less familiar aspects of modernist theatre history, engaging topics such as the revival of the first Black American musical, feminist and disability-led reinterpretations of canonical modernist plays, the use of modernist-inspired performance practice in contemporary university arts education and the continually contested meaning and importance of the avant-garde.
