Benetton Ford was one of the brightest of the newer names on the Formula 1 scene, although the team was no stranger to racing, at the time being the latest incarnation of the Toleman team that made a Grand Prix challenge in the early 1980s. In this lively study, the first book devoted exclusively to the history of the team, respected author Phil Drackett relates the fascinating events behind the development of Benetton Ford, which challenged the supremacy of McLaren, Ferrari and Williams in a bid to win the World Championship. From the days when Luciano Benetton delivered his sister's hand-made sweaters by bicycle, the formation of the Toleman team which would later be taken over by Benetton and the almost accidental entry of Ford into the Benetton scene, this book traces the triumphs and disappointments, the crises and the happy times - to the late 1980's, when Benetton Ford stands on the verge of lasting success. Much of the story is told through the lives and times of the drivers who have been associated with the team, a colourful collection which includes Derek Warwick, Nelson Piquet, Alessandro Nannini, Johnny Herbert, Thierry Boutsen, Gerhard Berger, Teo Fabi and many more. The book also looks forward to the final decade of that century and how the partnership of Benetton and Ford view the situation. All the essential facts, statistics and results are included, in an entertaining, readable account illustrated with over 150 colour and black and white photographs. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 0 pages.

Like Susan Griffin's A Chorus of Stones: The Private Life of War, Alex Vernon's most succinctly bred explores war by exploring around war, by operating in the margins. Vernon records his ongoing relationship with war and soldiering-from growing up in late Cold War 1980s middle America to attending West Point, going to and returning from the first Gulf War, and watching, as a writer and academic, the coming of the second Iraq war. Not merely a collection of essays, this book has a trajectory, and the chapters, appearing in rough chronological order, loop in and out of one another. It is not a narrow autobiography that attempts to account only for the writer's life; it uses that life to illuminate the lives of its readers, to tell us about the time and place in which we find ourselves. In this selection of poems written over thirty years, Leon Stokesbury careens through the Maple Leaf Bar and the Restaurant-on-the-Corner, Oklahoma City, and Fairbanks, Alaska, consuming and offering up his sweet-and-sour vision of our lot in life. Whether he comes at us in masks as varied as his father and mother, Nick Bottom or John Keats, Señor Wences or Owen Glendower, it is his own Cheshire grin we spy creeping out around the edges. He readily sees the horror in the death of a New Orleans poet, in his own brother's sufferings, in the inescapable process of mutability itself, but he finds also, often enough, the dark joke at the center of things and the chance for redemptive laughter. Whether in his own deeply personal voice or in the multitude of idioms from which he is able to drawsouthern, midwestern, ShakespeareanStokesbury creates whole landscapes in perfected, formal lines from the shards of memories and dreams. "Whenever the airship flew over a village, or whenever she flew over a lonely field on which some peasants were working, a tremendous shout of joy rose up in the air towards Count Zeppelin's miracle ship which, in the imagination of all who saw her, suggested some supernatural creature." As this paean to the Zeppelin from an early-20th-century issue of the German newspaper Thüringer Zeitung makes clear, the airship inspired a unique sense of awe. These phenomenal rigid, lighter-than-air craft-the invention of Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin (1838-1917) -approached the size of a small village. Although they moved slowly, there was no mistaking their exciting-or ominous-potential. Friends of the machine believed that it would revolutionize commerce, carry scientists to otherwise inaccessible places, and deliver bombs with great accuracy. Before the airplane proved its reliability and superior practicality-and before the fiery crash of the Hindenburg in 1937-Zeppelins made a deep impression on the minds of Europeans, especially in Germany. The German-American photographer Frank Eugene (1865-1936) is regarded internationally as one of the most innovative art photographers of the period prior to the first World War. He studied painting under Wilhelm von Diez at the Munich Academy of Art and was then active as a portrait painter of famous actors and musicians. He first came to the attention of a wider public as a photographer in 1899 on the occasion of a solo exhibition in the New York Camera Club. As a founder-member of the Photo-Secession, his works were included in almost all the important exhibitions in North America and Europe organized by that association. His method of manipulating his negatives by etching and drawing on them attracted particular attention and gained him the name of a painter-photographer. Frank Eugene was also successful in importing his unusual pictorial technique to his students at the School of Photography in Munich and the Academy of Graphic Arts and Book Design in Leipzig, where he taught portrait and art photography. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 368 pages.

They are creatures of habit, eating the same set meals on the same day, week in and week out. One day, however, one of their group, Monsier Lambert, does not turn up at the usual time, and the other regulars soon turn to speculating as to the reasons for the sudden and unexpected changes in their fellow diner - it surely must be because of a woman, they conclude. Why else would Monsieur Lambert not appear until twenty to two on one day, but already be eating his main course by the time the rest of them arrive for lunch the very next day? Why does he develop a taste for terrine, a dish he has previously always despised? The diners are right: Lambert has indeed met a wonderful woman, Florence. This revelation changes everything, and instead of discussing football and politics as usual, the other diners in the bistro start reminiscing about women they have loved and lost, about passionate affairs in their past, all the while continuing to take a keen interest in Monsieur Lambert and his Florence. Can this new state of affairs continue? After all, women come and go, but football has always been, and will always be, a part of their lives. EB; 7.25 X 0.75 X 9 inches; 166 pages.

In this volume, the author presents full details of design and construction, armament, protection, machinery and performance, all backed up with accurate data tables listing design figures, trials results, and full particulars at different stages in the ships' careers. The history of each battleship is recounted, especially their major contribution in WWI, where they bore the brunt of the action at the Dardenelles, bombarded the Belgium coast, patrolled the North Sea and the Channel, reinforced the Italian Fleet, and served in East Africa, the East Indies and the White Sea. Most were extensively modified during the War and this variety has made them of special interest to the historian, enthusiast and ship modeler. EB; 4to 11" - 13" tall.

This is the first comprehensive and fully documented study of Philadelphia's architecture (originally published in hardcover in 1974) , covering all sections of the city and covering buildings from all periods, from those that have stood since Colonial times to influential and representative works of the twentieth century. The documentation is based on the latest research available to the authors, including their own extensive searches both in the archives and on the streets. In all, some 450 buildings and/or locations are listed, and about 240 of these are illustrated, in almost every case with a contemporary photograph. The location of each building is noted, along with its date of construction and its architect, when these are known. When applicable, late major alterations are also cited, by date, architect, and extent. And in many cases, brief commentaries are included that place individual buildings in their historic context or that offer critical evaluations of their architectural merits. The Deutschland, Admiral Scheer and Admiral Graf Spee were revolutionary warships when they first appeared in the 1930s and proved formidable opponents in World War II. The warships of the World War II era German Navy are among the most popular subject in naval history with an almost uncountable number of books devoted to them. However, for a concise but authoritative summary of the design history and careers of the major surface ships it is difficult to beat a series of six volumes written by Gerhard Koop and illustrated by Klaus-Peter Schmolke. Each contains an account of the development of a particular class, a detailed description of the ships, with full technical details, and an outline of their service, heavily illustrated with plans, battle maps and a substantial collection of photographs. These have been out of print for ten years or more and are now much sought after by enthusiasts and collectors, so this new modestly priced reprint of the series will be widely welcomed. ? ? This volume covers the three ships of a design so revolutionary that it defied conventional categories. Deutschland (later renamed Lützow) , Admiral Scheer and Admiral Graf Spee were simply termed panzerschiffe (armoured ships) by the Germans, but they were known to their opponents by the far more evocative term Pocket Battleships. He is known as Jacob's brother, the "first-born? ", the preferred of Isaac, a ? "skilled hunter? ", and ancestor of the Edomites; he is even called "my lord? " eight times by Jacob (Genesis). But he is also hated by Yahweh (Malachi) , and is accused of -among other things- with anger, wrath and violence against his brother(Amos). In the end, he was threatened with massacre and annihilation (Jeremiah, Obadiah). Esau is a character with multiple representations in the Hebrew Bible, which areas complex as they are difficult to decipher. Why such dissimilarities in the biblical images about Esau? What perspective must we adopt in the face of this pattern? With these questions in mind, we will examine the sociopolitical and ideological framework that gave birth to the biblical tradition of the brotherhood of Jacob, the Israelite patriarch, and his brother Esau. This analysis incorporates traditional approaches of biblical scholarship and current anthropological perspectives. It will also trace, albeit briefly, some topics that are relevant to this issue, e. G. , the tradition of the brotherhood as it appears in biblical scholarship, the question of southern Jordanian material culture in the Negev, and the issue of kinship, segmentation and orality in ancient societies.
